Life is never dull at the Smith house. Luke fell in P.E. class at
school Thursday at about 10 a.m. He told them he hurt his foot.
They took him to see the nurse, but he could walk on it, wiggle his
toes, and nothing looked wrong, so they gave him a band aide and he
went on. By lunch it was hurting pretty badly and he had a major
meltdown (which he probably hurt it more). I took him home and
called the dr.about his foot, and they said they could see him at
2:15. So, we went home to wait for our appointment.I put ice on it,
and he asked for a bath. After his bath he laid down and fell
asleep. I went to wake him for the drs appointment and when I pulled
the covers back I was shocked to see a huge softball like ball full
of blood on the base of his foot. I called the dr. and they said
skip the appointment and go to the ER. I could not carry him myself
and he was crying it hurt so bad, so luckily Kathy Harrison was
nearby and she helped me carry him to my van. We drove him to
Children's and Greg met us there. It is broken in 2 places. At the
heel and where the pinky toe meets the foot at the ball (I know I am
so technical with all this) but that ball is broken. He is now in a
cast up to his knee and now Luke wants a wheelchair. He asked the
hospital for theirs!! They put on a walking cast with a shoe and
he did pretty good today. He did not make it through the entire day
at school because it was hurting him so badly. I am going to take
off one more week so we can try and get Luke to stick it out at
school all day with the goal of him riding the bus to my work. So
far,he has only made it till about 12:30 at the latest. So, like I
said, life is never dull in the Smith house!!!

Hi!

Your email was forwarded to me by I believe another member on your list.  I coordinate the EIBI (Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention) ABA progam at the Kelly O'Leary Center for ASD at Children's.  I know it can be overwhelming to get a new diagnosis (despite suspecting it all along) and then try to wade through treatment options.

At TKOC we have an Outreach Coordinator who's job is to help families navigate the many systems out there and provide support.  She herself is a parent of an adult with autism and has/had to be a longtime advocate for her son.  If you feel like chatting with someone who's been there, her name is Dr. Jennifer Brown and can be reached via email at Jennifer.Brown@... or through a phone tree at 513-636-5340.
Good luck,

Hello everyone, I am new to your group.  A while back, my daughter had
a meltdown and I was able to call on a member of your group for help.
I attended the autism expo that you held last year. Although I have
expected a diagnosis of autism with my daughter, its one thing to
suspect it and another to actually hear it from a professional.
Anyway, today we got the final word from childrens hospital that indeed
my daughter is autistic.  I am still numb, even though I thought I had
prepared for this.  I find myself hoping that I am following the right
path for her development.  My daughter is 3 1/2 years old and has just
begun a public pre-school.  She is in a class for disabled students,
and, has an IEP.  We are also going to apply for an ABA program.  After
that, I don't know.  I do know that I love my daughter very much, and
she is a very happy child...most of the time, and is trying very hard
to communicate.   She has had speech therapy and will continue that at
school along with some occupational therapy.  Wish me luck. If anyone
has any suggestions or care to offer any support, that is much
appreciated and welcome.  sorry such a long post..

Our son started at ABS on October 30 and it has been great. I wish he
had been going since pre-school (he'll be seven next month). His speech
has improved a great deal and he seems much more tolerant of change.

They also give a great deal of feedback every day about what he did
that day.

You are on the right path-  I am so thankful for you that you ahve this diagnosis now and not later.  This will help the team/school work with your daughter.  I am a special educaiton school teacher and a parent of two children with disabilities.
Just because I have your attention I wnat to mention "people first language"  I like to tell all knew to this parents about this-
Your daughter is NOT autistic _____(chids name)-  Autism does not define her-  Please always refer to her as her name and her disabiltiy always some second-  Not one child with a disability I have met is the same as another, jsut like not one child who is typical is the same:)
Example using one of my children-
Trevor is Trevor who has muscular dystrophy,  He is not musculare dystrophy Trevor-  his disabilty is not who he is-  He is Trevor who has a disabilty-
Hope it helps you too, like it did me-
Hugs and good luck

Hi Julia!  Thanks for writing back.  Yes, I would appreciate your passing my email along to other people.  I joined the group hoping for support, advice and friendship (which I know I'll get)!   Ethan has been doing ABA at the Center in Fairfield since November and he has made so much progress.  They're a wonderful group!  Unfortunately, we couldn't afford to send him there anymore.  He is starting at the center downtown next week (ABS) because we could access the Autism Scholarship to pay for it.  I'm just having mixed emotions right now.  I'm excited about him starting at ABS, but at the same time, it was sad to pull him from preschool and the Center in Fairfield.  Oh, and the transition to a new school has been weighing on my mind (surprising, huh???)   Anyway, thanks again for writing back!  I hope all is well with Luke.

Welcome to our group! No Apologies.  Believe me, we have all been there. I am Julia Ann Smith. My husband Greg and I started Families with ASD when our son Luke was having some medical issues and we didn't know where to turn.   Actually, we are having our 2 year Anniversary Party this coming Saturday.  It is not at our usual place, so I am not 100 % sure how it will go, but...it will be fun. Bring your entire family, with no worries about meltdowns.  We all have them, and you will be surrounded by others who live with autism 24/7.  I am getting ready to post the next meeting, so watch for the post.  Please feel free to email me anytime. My email is kemobob@... and our website is Familieswithasd.org      Again, welcome to our group.  Remember, you are not alone.  Sincerely, Julia

In this episode of "True Life," we get up close and personal

unique way

differently and with varying severity). Yet they're all capable of
amazing

things.

Hello,
Greg and I took Luke to see Dr. Franz yesterday for his EEG and MRI
results. The EEG results were normal with no seizure activity during
our stay. The MRI results were compared to the last MRI he had back
in November of 2005. Since his last MRI in 2005, they found multiple
prominent perivascular spaces within the parietal white matter. The
Spectroscopy part of the MRI showed that he had mild parenchymal
volume loss. I told the doctors they needed the "MRI for Dummies"
book for parents because all of this is Greek to me. What it boils
down to is that Luke has lost brain mass or has suffered brain damage
since November of 2005. They do not know the cause of the damage or
if it is a permanent damage. The only way we will know is with time.

One of the theories is that it is Medicine related. Dr. Franz wants
to try and take him off the Depakote 250 mgs a week until he is
completely off and see if that makes a difference. He said he is not
100% sure if our last neurologist was correct in his diagnosis and
treatment of Luke and feels he was put on too much medicine. It
could also be auto-immune related. Not all the auto-immune test have
come in, so he didn't want to give us a definite answer. Eventually
in the future we will do another scan to check and compare the MRI
and see if his white matter continues to shrink, stays the same, or
rebuilds. So, we did get an answer, but a ton more questions.
Please continue to pray for Luke. Today we are taking Luke to visit
his new school at CNE, the Stair program, and then back to children's
for a follow up with Dr. Cambpell from Psy. Monday, Luke and I will
be going to his new school, so wish us luck!!

Hey guys. Sorry I've checked out for a while. Luke had a med reaction
to Keppra and became very violent at school on Monday. They called
911 and we had to admitt him to the Psy unit for a med wash. While we
were there they went ahead and did the Telementry Video EEG, and the
MRI, however, they did not sedate him or use contrast like they were
supposed to. It was a mess. Luke won't be able to return to school for
a month,(that is how long Keppra takes to get out of system) so I am
meeting with the school today to discuss placement options. Please
continue to pray that the doctors get to the bottom of his recent
seizures, tics, cognitive slide downhill, aggression issues, weird
rash, excessive sleep, etc... It has been a very rough couple of

Hello everyone. There has been a change of location for our Saturday,
March 17th meeting. We normally meet at the Clough Pike Baptist
Church, but it was double booked. So, thanks to Lilanthi and Kim, we
will be able to have our 2 year Anniversary Party at the Anderson Hills
United Methodist Church, which is where we hosted the 1st Annual Autism
Expo last Sept. Anyway, I cut and pasted the info from our website
about our upcoming meeting. We will have a special guest, Kathy Morris
with a ton of information about estate planning, living trust, etc. in
case you want to talk to her, (she is just bringing packets so don't
worry). She just wants us to have needed information on what we should
be thinking about as far as the "future planning" for our children.
Saturday, March 17th: 6 p.m. - 9 p. m. : 2 Year Anniversary Party!!!!
@ the Anderson Hills United Methodist Church:
7515 Forest Rd. Cincinnati, OH
Yes, it has been two years already. Can you believe it? We will be
having a party to celebrate our 2 Year Anniversary as well as a special
guest, Kathy Morris, from the Community Fund Management Foundation.
She will be bringing some wonderful parent/family information packs for
you to take home on estate/ and future planning for your child with
ASD. So grab a snack, and plan to come for some great family fun!!
Our 2 year Anniversary will be held at the Anderson Hills United
Methodist Church. This is NOT the usual place for our meetings. There
was a double booking at our normal location. Anderson Hills United
Methodist Church is where our Autism Expo was held last year, and where
it is going to be held again this year. It faces Beechmont Avenue
and is across from the Anderson Towne Center which used to be called
the Beechmont Mall. You can take the Five Mile Exit off of 275 and
turn right onto Beechmont and right onto Forest, or you can take the
Amelia Beechmont Exit off of 275 and make a left and go all the way
down Beechmont and make a left on to Forest.

Julia,

We will be praying for Luke and your family during this rough time.

You may want to consider homeschooling this month as a break for everyone.  It may be possible to get a leave of absence from work with the Family Medical Leave Act.  Also, there are all sorts of ways to detox medications quickly and safely from the body.  Just some ideas!  I know that you are exploring all options.

We wish you the best!

Take care,

Valerie Richey
