I couldn't do it that late, I work night shift, but I have a friend who watches little one's and she can handle mine (which isn't easy) and I'm sure she'd to great with yours.  She lives of Mt Carmel Tobasco Rd.
Her name is Melissa, and her number is 528-2282 if you want to give her a call and talk to her.  I told her to be expecting some calls, I was passing her name around.  She's a stay at home mom.

Here in Fargo ,ND A mao with a child on the spectrum is opening a non-
profit day care for kids on the spectrum. She has an OT that comes in
for her son now and is looking to find a teacher with training to open
by Jan 1 2008, it seems like you have a large and well orginzed group
maybe you could find someome to look into starting one .In my case I
had to find a part time job to be with my 16yr old son its tough but it
has worked well for him and we were able to down size our spending.
when iI get that web site I'll pass it on,Murray

Also, look into JellyBean Junction, they were willing to take andrew and I think he would have liked it there, but I ended up staying on night shift.

I'm from North Dakota but I know the difficulty people experience with insurance.I have BC BS and they put limits on mental health coverage and if a child need extra service [more than 20 visits)  they come out of pocket or do with out. 20 visits could be 10 months if seeing Psychologist and Psychiatirst in ythe same month.

SIGNS ARE NOT PERMITTED in hearing rooms.

Hey Jessica,

Just wanted to let you know that I called the Clerk of the House of
Reps, and she said that signs or posters are not allowed in the hearing
rooms. Whoops!

Are you available today to send an email to the Dayton and Autism Ohio
lists letting people know that they can bring pics of their children
but don't bring signs into the hearing room. They can bring signs to
the statehouse, but not into the hearing rooms. If someone does bring
a sign the Sgt at Arms will probably ask them to leave it outside of
the hearing room. My bad on that one!

-Is our story relevant, or is this a separate issue?

We are unable to get any health insurance coverage for our son at all.
My husband is self-employed, and since we exhausted COBRA coverage
about a year ago we have been unable to find a single
"individual/self- employed" plan that will cover a child with autism
spectrum disorder, let alone pay for therapies. We have worked for
almost a year with an independent broker who sorted through a
gazillion plans and we have been rejected countless time.

We also have another child with multiple minor medical issues but not
on spectrum. She has also been rejected for coverage and the few
plans that would "accept" her would not pay for OT or ST. We have
paid over $20,000 in medical related expenses this year alone, none of
it covered by insurance.

When we did have health insurance through my husband's former
employer, they covered speech therapy for my hearing impaired daughter
but not for our autistic son. Also, our expenses for the RDI
consultant (licensed psychologist) who treats our son have been
completely uncovered. We can't even get insurance to cover our
child's "normal" medical care (checkups, flu shot, etc.), let alone
his autism related therapies.

I sure hope your efforts are successful, and that someone addresses
the larger issue of bias against insuring "individual" people.

Our daughter attended Linden Grove for two years back when it was Trinity & we LOVED it.  The parent commitment was not too bad, made for a tight community.  The staff is WONDERFUL!  The tuition includes music, art & OT.  We thought it was a deal!

Hi Listmates,

As we begin advocating for the Autism Health Insurance parity bill,
we need to collect your personal stories and your contact
information in order to keep everyone informed. Down the line we
will have to be extremely organized, so that we can get this bill
passed and so that we can turn on a dime when we have a roadblock.

We will have roadblocks, so everyone's help will be needed!

I know you have seen this request before, but I encourage each and
everyone on this list who does not have their loved one's therapies
paid for by your own private insurance to write down your story. If
you have health insurance but you had to get other means of funding
for your ABA aides, please write down your story. If you wanted
speech therapy for your loved one, but your insurance only covered
20 visits a year, please write down your story. If your loved one
needs social skills therapy, but your insurance said "no, we won't
cover that", please write down your story.

Please send your story to askASO@... Please include
your: Name, address, city, zip+4, phone, email address, state
representative and state senator. If you don't know your state
legislators, that's ok. Just send in your story and contact
information.

If you do not have a story but you support this legislation, please
send your contact information to the same address:
askASO@... Ask your family members and friends to do
the same. We all know of someone who has had trouble getting the
treatment that they need. We can all be involved and work together
to get this legislation passed!

Thank you all so much for the work you are doing now!

Cheers,
Lori Peacock

Linden Grove is not year-round per se.  However, they do offer summer school for an add'l fee.  Perhaps the scholarship will cover this, too, considering Linden Groe is much less expensive per year than ABS.

Please remember that comparing ABS (where my guy goes, and we LOVE!) and Linden Groves are like comparing caterpillars to butterflies.  ABS is a good starting place for children to learn how at attend school period.  They work more on behaviors and not so much on academics.  Very important.  But, your child isn't intended to go there forever.  They plan to mainstream these children into typical public school classrooms of 25 children.  Not very realistic, IMO.  that is where Linden Grove comes in.  After completeing the program at ABS, children should be transitioned to Linden Grove, which has a small class setting, and a lot of the behavioral supports that ABS has that public school does not, but introduces much more of the academics lacking at ABS.  Then, after completing a period at Linden Grove (a more typical school setting,) they should be brought back into the public schools and mainstreamed as much as possible.  That is linden Grove's mission.  Not to keep them there forever.  I like both catepillars anb butterflies very  much!

But, not every child is accepted at Linden Grove.  Not every child is going to dovetail with all the other students.  it isn't a perfect fit for everyone.  But, they have excellent therapists on staff and an excellent, very committed staff, as does ABS.

Good Luck!

Anna

We visited there a couple years ago when it was still Trinity and were very impressed with their ability to adapt curriculum to each individual student. Our only reservation was lack of typical peers for peer modeling. I did do a Google search on Linden Grove last week to see what came up and I found a short video about the school with parent commentary. They all sound very pleased. I think the name of the video was In the Tank? You can find it on YouTube or it comes up as one of the top 6-7 sites if you Google Linden Grove, Cininnati.

Hi all,

I realize not everyone will be able to travel to Columbus Tuesday for the HB 170-Autism Parity Hearing.  However, it is still possible for you to participate in this important effort.  Here are two options:

Stories can be sent to askASO@.... Please include

Second, emails/phone calls/faxes can be sent directly to the members of the
committee.  See below:

WE are looking for options to use for the Autism Scholarship program
for our son, if not this next year then in the future. He is
currently homeschooled, 7yo and HFA. The Linden Grove school website
looks very good, low staff:student ratios and excellent therapeutic
programs. But they are a parent coop (10 hours involvement per
month), which seems a bit excessive considering they charge
$15,000/year tuition. But they do have a much better staffing ratio
than Summit (6-8:1)

Does anyone have any experience with them?

Thanks.

Anjali
