Subject: Adult Autism Council

Families with ASD was created for the purpose of giving families affected by autism an opportunity to be with others that share in the same experiences and to understand one anothers challenges.  The goal was to give added strength and resources to help our children. While that is still our mission, we have realized in the last year that we need to start paying more and more attention to adults with autism.  Afterall, these children will be adults in the very near future.  Therefore, we created the Adult Task Force for parents who have concerns about services for their teens and adults.  In the last month, we launched our "I Am An Adult With Autism" TM Campaign on our website, www.familieswithasd.org

While the adult task force and " I Am An Adult With Autism" TM  Campaign continue to grow, we still wanted to find ways to continue to give adults with autism a way to become more active participants in the community.  Therefore, we have decided to create an Adult Autism Council.  This will be a council comprised of people with autism who are 18 years of age or older.  They will meet once a month and talk about the needs and wants of the autism community.  The chair of this committee will then report the suggestions of the council at every Families with ASD board meeting.  The Families with ASD board will  thentake these suggestions  very seriously and try to create services/opportunities based on the ideas of the Adult Autism Council.

The first meeting of the Adult Autism Council will be on (January 24th, tenative date).  Families with ASD has created a Needs Assessment survey that will be a starting point for the council.  We would like every adult  to fill this out before coming to the meeting and to bring this with them:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=5U1BfN32G3_2fHsxEFpMLxEg_3d_3d

If you are an adult with autism that is interested in being part of this council or have any questions please contact us at Doug220@... .  Thank you very much.

I'm sad I missed this.  I have to say, Katie Reider was a personal friend of mine and my sons.  Her music is beautiful and my son just adored playing football with her.

Use exact wording from your procedural safeguards booklet.  You need to sound nice, to the point, understanding, yet firm.  They need to know that they are going to have to deal with you because you know the law and are prepared to do whatever it takes to make them follow it.  Good luck.  God Bless!  Erika

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has knowledge about a situation... .

We recently moved to Cincinnati from out of state. We were told that my kiddo did not have an ETR or school-aged assessment with her previous IEP that we brought from out of state and that the school would have to do an ETR and draft a new IEP.  The state we came from did qualify our daughter for Kindergarten services but did not do a full evaluation.  They said it was not necessary to qualify her for Kindergarten in the state we lived in.  Anyways, long story but we have gone through the ETR and the school district has drafted a new IEP.  As of tomorrow we are down to our last day of our 30 days after our initial IEP meeting and we have not come to agreement as to the IEP.  What can be done from here?  They mentioned a PR1? or something like that form.  Does anyone have any experience or knowledge with this situation?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sherry,

I have the names of several excellent attorneys in the Cincinnati area.  have attached a list to this mail.  They all know and understand the laws that pertain to individuals who have disabilities.  There are also many others in the area, probably more than I am aware.  Are you looking for someone specifically to work with a school?  Or do you have a child who is in school and you are wanting to begin your future planning?  If you are looking for someone to work with the school, perhaps Janet Pecquet and/or Jennifer Anstaett, or Elizabeth Corr would be the most help, from my list.  I think they have all worked with school systems, and would be able to help you.  If they can't, they will refer you to someone who can help you.

There are other excellent attorneys in the area also.  My list would be extremely large.  If you have any questions, please contact me, and I will try to help, although I am not permitted to recommend one over another.

I am sorry. We are sold out. If a family calls and cancels I will post it, but
for now, both train cars are full. The deadline to have payment in and order
forms sent to us was Monday the 16th. We of course will do it again next year,
so make sure you look for the post early so your family won't miss out.

Thanks. Julia

be going as a group on the 6:15 p.m. Pajama Run on Saturday, November 21st,
2009.  I have reserved two train cars (145 spots) so that our group will get to
ride together.  Tickets have gone up this year and are $16 a piece. If you
ride with Families with ASD and purchase tickets from us, we will again offer
them to you for only $8 a ticket. Families with ASD is very grateful to an
anonymous donor whom is helping us offer you the tickets at a discount. We
always look for sponsors because we want more families to be able to afford this
wonderful train ride.
>       If you have not been on the North Pole Express, it is a wonderful
experience.  The train cars are decorated and there are elves that help out.
They read "The Polar Express" to the children.  An autism sensitive Santa gives
each child a bell, just like in the book.  He stops and speaks with every child
and if you want your picture taken with him, he is happy to do so.  If you
bring a copy of the "The Polar Express", he will sign it for your child.  After
Santa leaves, the children lead us singing Christmas Carols.  It is a wonderful
time.
>
> The train ride will again be at the Lebanon train station, so you will need to
meet us there.  This is called the Pajama run, so everyone is encourage to wear
your PJ's for the ride, just like the little boy in the story. You are supposed
to arrive at least 45 mins before the train takes off, so we would need
everyone to arrive between 5:15p.m. &  no later than 5:30p.m. (to allow time
for parking). I will hand out your tickets and give your family train car
assignments at the train depot. Each year we ask that families wear a red Santa

It is a wonderful
time.

everyone to arrive between 5:15p.m. &  no later than 5:30p.m. (to allow time

If I have not received your payment, then I will put your tickets back up for sale so that another family will be able to join us.    If you are unable to ride with us, but still want to go, you can go to Kindervelt's website and download the order form.  Tickets for the train ride will be $16 a person and the times open are 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 12 noon, 1:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m. , 3:45 p.m. 5 p.m. and 6:15. (Hurry, tickets sell out quickly).

If you order tickets for the 6:15 p.m. ride through Kindervelt, the ticket price will be $16 each.  The only way to get the Families with ASD discounted price is to order tickets through me. You do NOT need to be a member of the Families with ASD, but we do wish that only families with children/adults with autism purchase our discounted tickets.  The two reserved cars are to help families living with autism attend a group outing knowing they are surrounded by others that care and know about autism.   All checks for the Families with ASD train tickets should be made out to Families with ASD.  We will use the money to pay for the Polar Express train tickets.

Dear Families,

Families with ASD 5th  Annual North Pole Express Train Ride!!

Date: Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Time:  6:15 p.m. (The Pajama Ride)

Location: Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad Depot in Lebanon, OH

Tickets: We have reserved 2 train cars ( 145 tickets total) for the 6: 15p.m. Train ride.

Families with ASD Group outing to Kindervelt's North Pole Express.  We will be going as a group on the 6:15 p.m. Pajama Run on Saturday, November 21st, 2009.  I have reserved two train cars (145 spots) so that our group will get to ride together.  Tickets have gone up this year and are $16 a piece. If you ride with Families with ASD and purchase tickets from us, we will again offer them to you for only $8 a ticket. Families with ASD is very grateful to an anonymous donor whom is helping us offer you the tickets at a discount. We always look for sponsors because we want more families to be able to afford this wonderful train ride.
If you have not been on the North Pole Express, it is a wonderful experience.  The train cars are decorated and there are elves that help out. They read "The Polar Express" to the children.  An autism sensitive Santa gives each child a bell, just like in the book.  He stops and speaks with every child and if you want your picture taken with him, he is happy to do so.  If you bring a copy of the "The Polar Express", he will sign it for your child.  After Santa leaves, the children lead us singing Christmas Carols.  It is a wonderful time.

The train ride will again be at the Lebanon train station, so you will need to meet us there.  This is called the Pajama run, so everyone is encourage to wear your PJ's for the ride, just like the little boy in the story. You are supposed to arrive at least 45 mins before the train takes off, so we would need everyone to arrive between 5:15p.m. &  no later than 5:30p.m. (to allow time for parking). I will hand out your tickets and give your family train car assignments at the train depot. Each year we ask that families wear a red Santa hat because we always do a group picture. (usually you can get a red Santa hat at Walgreens or Dollar store for only $2 each).

I can't find the list of advocates. I could have sworn there was one on here a
few months ago and I thought I printed it off and filed it. One of my neighbors
needs someone to help her with her kids IEP (not on the spectrum) meetings. If
anyone has them and can e-mail me My neighbor and I would greatly appreciate it.

Comments are convincing. One especially:

November 6, 2009 at 11:00 am (40) kathy-sd says:

"I'm from a town of 2000 in SD, there are several women pregnant and we are all
due within a few weeks of each other. Four of us got the H1N1 vaccine 2 weeks
ago and one by one each of us started to have preterm contractions. We are all
due in Nov and Dec so we are further along than most of the people that lost
their babies. There is no way you can tell us that our preterm labor was not
caused by the H1N1 vaccine. It may look like a "fluke" to some people when these
women are scattered all over the country but we are talking about 4 of us in our
small community. My heart goes out to all of you that lost your babies."

I got both vaccines on Thursday. I was 9 weeks pregnant. I miscarried on Sunday.
I was told by several doctors to get these vaccines. Now I wish I followed my
gut feeling and not get them at ALL!

i work in a hospital like setting and was told 'the benefits outweigh the risks"
1am i got the vaccine, 3am i started bleeding and craming, 3pm miscarried. you

October 31, 2009 at 1:29 pm (4) sue says:

I had the H1N1 vaccination and 24 hours later had a miscarriage.

October 31, 2009 at 8:25 pm (5) Linda Hill says:

My daughter in law was 10 weeks pregnant and had the H1N1 vaccine on Friday that
night she miscarried.

November 1, 2009 at 9:58 pm (6) Stephanie says:

I received the H1N1 over a week ago. I am now 5 weeks. I am doing well so far.

November 2, 2009 at 10:52 pm (7) SoSorry says:

I was so ready to get the H1N1 vaccine last week and they were only giving them
to pregnant women. I was 6 weeks along and got it and the next day I started
cramping and miscarried. I already had two healthy pregnancies and never
miscarried or had any problems. My doctors think I am crazy to think it was the
H1N1 but if no one looks into this than other women will not know. I am so sorry
that I got it.

November 3, 2009 at 4:30 pm (8) Connie says:

I also received the H1N1 vaccination on October 22nd, 2009 and went into labor
on October 25th, at 16 weeks pregnant and we just heard the heartbeat and
everything was fine with my pregnancy on October 16th, 2009, then on October
28th my water broke then on October 29th, I delivered a stillborn baby boy, and
no one can tell me why.Everyone wants to say it did not come from the shot but I
believe it did. My baby was growing at the correct pace and everyone wants to
brush off the vaccination. I say if you have the vaccination and suffer a
miscarriage if they are able to perform an autopsy have it done. November 3,
2009 at 4:34 pm

November 4, 2009 at 10:12 pm (10) sioux falls, south dakota says:

I received the H1N1 vaccine on October 16th and started experiencing cramping on
the 22nd. I was nearly 17 weeks pregnant and gave birth to a stillborn baby boy
on the 23rd. Like many of the other women here, the first thing I suspected was
the H1N1 vaccine. I immediately asked a nurse at the hospital if that would have
anything to do with it. Without hesitation, she told me "absolutely not." I had
reservations about getting the vaccine, but followed the advice of my long
trusted family doctor. In a follow up appointment with my doctor 3 days after I
lost my baby, I asked him if the vaccine would have had any adverse effects on
my baby. He also said that it was not possible. I don't believe that my doctor
was necessarily lying to me, he was simply following the accepted practices and
opinions of his field. I do, however, believe that as a nation, we are being
lied to. This vaccine is NOT safe during pregnancy. There has not been enough
testing done to determine this and there are far too many "coincidences" for
this to be anything but a result of a vaccine that was hastily pushed into
production and distribution in an effort to stop widespread panic. I have read
so many stories in defense of the vaccine that will talk about how common
miscarriages are, but I would challenge you to ask ANY health care professional
how common second trimester miscarriages are. My baby was doing perfect
developmentally and I had felt him move earlier that day. My heart goes out to
all of you out there who have had to go through the same heartache and loss that
I have had in the last couple of weeks. There is no reason that any woman or
family should have to go through this. Get the word out to all of the pregnant
women that you know. I know that if I had heard that women had been losing their
babies shortly after they received the vaccine, I would have followed my gut and
not gotten it myself. Maybe then Wyatt would have had a chance at life.

November 6, 2009 at 8:16 am (36) Marina Rossi says:

I recently got the H1N1 vaccine and miscarried 3 days later. I thought it could
have been the vaccine but didnt ask. After finding this site I believe it was
the vaccine. Sorry to everyone else out there who has just experienced a
miscarriage.

November 6, 2009 at 11:54 am (42) ashley says:

Im not sure but not only myself, i know someone that withing 4 days of getting
the shot we both miscarried, i was only 6 weeks and she was 4 months along, not
sure if the shot caused it and cant find any other information but i am a little
concerned about this coincidence.

November 11, 2009 at 2:05 pm (238) zoe says:

I was vaccinated on Friday and on Tuesday my first trimester screening
ultrasound showed that my baby did not have a heart beat. I was 12 weeks along
and the baby measured 12 weeks so it must have happened after the vaccination
(when I was 11 weeks). I doubt that they will ever draw any conclusions about
the cause of my baby's death but it is quite uncommon to have a miscarriage
after 12 weeks and if I could make the decision again, I would have played it
safe (although that's what I thought I was doing) and NOT have had the shot.

thinking about getting a flu shot?

This is a heart breaking story from a friend of mine... Yes, tomorrow I will be
protesting (with the consent of the mother who I'm still waiting to hear back
from) in memory of Wyatt James Ihnen. The mother who received the vaccine is my
best friend's sister-in-law. I am extremely close to the family.

She went in to get the H1N1 shot and that same night started experiencing cramps
and the baby started kicking more than usual. She didn't think anything of it at
first, just thought that she was getting sick or something, but the next morning
she still had cramps so she went to the hospital and Wyatt was stillborn
(natural birth!). Wyatt was 17 weeks old and 7 inches long. The mother and child
were healthy with no complications prior to the shot.

She and the father are having an extremely hard time with the death of their
son. She feels like by baby Wyatt kicking he was trying to tell mommy," Help
me!" That thought haunts her.

The family performed a funeral and everything.

a D&C. My heart is absolutely broken.

I have never had a miscarriage before. Have 1 healthy son who I carried to term.
No history of poor health (ie: diabetes, obesity, blood pressure, etc.)No
drugs/alcohol. I eat a healthy diet with lots of raw veggies & fruit, but not
vegatarian.

I heard my baby's heartbeat just a few weeks before and everything seemed to be
progressing normally. Now may baby is gone and there is nothing I or anyone can
do to turn back the clock. I will never know if this immunization was the cause
of my loss or what. But I am utterly broken. Emily, Ft Benning, GA, USA

This is so sad.

A friend of ours had a miscarriage on October 30th. She was just over 12 weeks
along, and there was no heartbeat at the 12 week ultrasound. She was right on
target for size and heartbeat the week before.

I just called my close friend (the woman who miscarried's best friend) and asked
if she had gotten the H1N1 shot recently. It turns out that she got the shot the
week before, at 11 weeks, when everything was fine with the pregnancy. Makes me
wonder.

Personally, I'd never get a vaccine while pregnant. My gut just says "NO" and I
try to trust that instinct, as it hasn't led me wrong so far.

We'd love to have you come even if you are not on the diet but are interesting in learning more.

Our meeting will be at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (not Good Shepherd Catholic Church).  We will be meeting in Room 100 which is past the gathering place to the left.  Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is located on Kenwood Road between Montgomery Road and Galbraith Road across from Nordstroms / Kenwood Town Center a couple houses down from Trio’s restaurant.
