Hi, all! Becky sent me an email with some great tips in it and told
me where they came from. I went to check them out. There were so
many of them that I had to share them with the group!

Umm... we do still have a group, don't we? Has everyone gone on
vacation? I hope it's somewhere fun.

I don't have the magazine, but I went to the website you mentioned
and checked it out. It's very interestng. It's put together by
three sisters from the South who grew up on good, down home, southern
fried cookin. Makes me hungry just thinking about it! They also
grew fat on that food.

The online journals posted by their members are very inspiring and
I'm sure they get a lot of support and help from that online journal.

What does everyone else think?

Does anyone have the current edition of Oprah Magazine?  I saw on the cover that they had an article on diet blogs.  I don't want to buy the magazine because my mother-in-law usually passes hers along to me when she's done, but I thought I'd ask if anyone here had seen the article.

I flipped through the magazine at the check out, and I remembered one site was 3fatchicks.com  It looks pretty informative.

Remember when I said I'd be incorporating FUN MOVEMENT into my daily
routine? Well, I ran into a slight problem. I got sick. The most
movemet I've done this week is going back and forth to the doctor's
office and the pharmacy. So... I'm going to throw my self on your
mercy this week. Next week, I shall take my poles and go walking all
over the place.

Meanwhile, I've got a question for you: Does someone else want to
create the next poll to see what else I'm going to be working on?
Anyone? Anyone? this is your chance to play Puppet Master. Go for it!

So, the poll is closed and it looks like I will be incorporating FUN
movement into my daily routine. This is in addition to Eating More
Fruits and Vegetables and Know Today what You're Eating Tomorrow. You
know what? This isn't easy. But I'm glad I'm doing it. And I'm glad
I'm playing guinea pig for our group.

So, what movement wil I be incorporating? Nordic walking, of course!
I just finished a 2 day training for Nordic Walking, and it was so
rejuvinating for me, for my soul. It was a reaffirmation.

Watch for the next poll. How exciting would it be if EVERYONE voted!!!

I cleaned my kitchen today, and found partial bottles of soda and Strawberry Kiwi Lemonade.  I poured them down the drain.  I can't drink the soda, Jim won't drink the lemonade, and neither of us needs to be drinking them at all.  I was very proud of me.  I like that lemonade.
And I realized today that I am caffeine and carbonation free, and have been for 2 months.  Which could explain why my personality is changing somewhat.  Donna thinks I'm amusing.  I'm not so sure.  I'll keep you posted.

Hi Elizabeth,
Home...finally after 13 days of travel. One thing about your food shopping and eating is that you had choices. In the airports and on the planes you are at the mercy of the food vendors.
In route to Cincinnati from Phoenix, Delta attendants  surprised me by coming through the aisle with a cart holding snack packages. I haven't seen food passed out by flight attendants for some time now. Oh Boy...could we be getting an apple and some peanuts not crusted with sugar coating or drenched in salt? NO, it was a hermetically sealed snack pouch holding shortbread cookies, cheese, peanut butter, chips and other stuff I couldn't even look at.
I dug in my bag and found an organic ProBar and drank my water. I don't think the people around me were even aware of how many calories and fat were in that little snack offering. They happily munched while watching the movie.
I got off the plane in Cincinnati and went to the deli place to get a sandwich to eat on my flight home. Funny enough, I saw a young woman with a tight pink t-shirt and across her boobs it read:
Conscientiously Eating

Dear Elizabeth and everyone else:

Hey, how 'bout them COLTS!!!!  Whooooooo!!!!!!

Okay, now that I have that out of my system . . .

I've known for a long time that if it's in my house, it will end up in my stomach.  Our SuperBowl excess was limited to clam dip.  BUT .. of course . .I made it in a bread bowl.  And we have an entire bread bowl left over.  And oh yes, let us not forget the cheetos.

Lately I've been feeling lots of aches in my joints.  I can't decide if it's because I've been eating more carbs or if it's the weather, or both.  Or if it's because I've been standing a lot, cleaning my kitchen.  Or if it's because I haven't been exercising as much as I said I would.  Does guilt make you ache?

I do want to comment on the "If it's in the house it will be in my mouth" phenomenon.  Some of you already know that I struggle with food addictions.  Specifically, I stay away from store-bought cookies and chocolate candy.  The rule for me to know if a food is addictive is, "If I eat one serving of it, does it make me crave another?"  I'm thinking those puffy Cheetos need to go on the list too.

Sometimes we are psychologically addicted to a food because it reminds us of a happier time.  Sometims we're physically addicted to a food because of how it affects our bodies.  And sometimes it just tastes so darned good we want to eat as much of it as we can.  Do any of you have trigger foods like this?

Like I tell my son David, "You can have treats -- just not every day, and only one serving."  When David eats sugar, it changes his personality.  He gets giggly, obnoxious, and doesn't listen when you tell him to stop.  I'm sure sugar changes my personality too.  For myself, if I have an occasional treat -- no more than once a week -- I feel SO much better than if I'm having a treat every day, or every other day.  My body doesn't ache and my cravings go away.

Have a wonderful day!!

Donna

The men in my family (Jim, Nolan, Nathan, and Jason) decided they
wanted to have a Super Bowl party, and handed me a shopping list that
contained items such as Gummi Bears, popcorn, two 2 litre bottles of
soda per person, chips, salsa, bean dip, and so on. I pointed out
that I would be doing the shopping and items were subject to approval.

I did not buy as much soda as was requested. I also did not buy all
soda. I bought some lemonade as well. We made 7-layer dip instead
of purchasing it. They baked brownies. I picked up some meat and
cheese from the deli and some nice rolls. And lots and lots of
fruit. I gave them healthy choices. which were summarily ignored.

Even by me.

I did not eat lots of junk. I just didn't eat lots of healthy
stuff. Here's the thing: I planned ahead of time that I would eat
this way on Super Bowl Sunday. I woke up Monday morning feeling
LOUSY! My body was crying out for fruit. So I gave into those
desperate pleas and fed myself bananas and apples throughout the
day. Supper was another sandwich (nothing else sounded good). and a
couple of brownies. And a handfull of chips. Did I mention all the
leftover junkfood is still in my house? Yeah, it is. Doing me in.

I already know that tomorrow I'm going to eat grapes and apples and
maybe an orange and a little bit of deli meat and perhaps some swiss
cheese, but I think I'll pass on the bread. And the chips. And Jim
will have finished off the brownies by then, which is a blessing.

So what am I confessing? If it's in my house, I'll eat it. If it's
sweet or crunchy or snack-food like, I'll eat it. Which is why I
don't buy that stuff very often.

Note: I'm really looking forward to those grapes!

How is everyone else doing? Please chime in. we've got some new
members and we haven't heard from anyone but me for awhile. I feel
like I'm just talking to myself. Someone else say something!

Warm hugs and happy walking!

Wow! Where did the week go??? All of a sudden it's Friday, and I
realized I hadn't checked in all week to tell you how I've been
doing with my fruits and veggies. Bad Lizzie!

It's actually been going pretty well. Each morning, I toss several
pieces of fuit in a bag and take them with me to work. I don't tell
myself, "Self, you have to eat everything in this bag before you go
home." I've found that sort of dialog to be self-defeating as it
reminds me too much of my mother saying, "you have to eat everything
on your plate." Instead, I have just kept it by my desk and munched
on it when I got hungry.

I've eaten grapes, bananas, oranges, pineapple, melon, and grape
tomatoes, all raw and fresh. Yum! In addition to that, I've been
drinking water all day long (this is much easier to do since I can't
have soda any more).

An interesting side effect to all of this is that I'm cooking dinner
earlier in the evening because I'm hungry. Not ravenous, but just a
comfortable "it's time to eat" sort of feeling. I cook a
traditional meal, meat based, with a few veggies to round things
out. Definitely room for improvement on this one.

One of you emailed me privately at the start of this and said, "You
know, if you "Know today what you're eating tomorrow" and you plan
to eat fruits and veggies, you can do two of the healthy habits at
once. What a wise woman she is! And I think she may be onto
something. This week hasn't been as easy as I had hoped it would
be. There obviously wasn't a lot of planning going on in my life,
either with regards to food or to here (you'll note the lack of a
poll). If it's alright with all of you, I'd like to choose "Know
Today what you're Eating Tomorrow" as my goal for next week. This
should help me be more organized, at least in some respects, and
hopefully I'll be able to do a better job of keeping you all updated
on my progress, and get a new poll posted. How does that sound?

I will say this: I did take all my measurements at the start of
this week. They're not very flattering measurements, and I'm not
overly excited about posting them. They will probably go into a
database which I need to create. Give me a few more days and we'll
get that up and running and then you can see how much ground I have
to cover.

Hugs to all!

Dear Group:

There was an interesting study today that said that most diabetics
don't exercise. You can read it here.

http://www.comcast.net/news/health/index.jsp?
cat=HEALTHWELLNESS&fn=/2007/01/26/571397.html

I nodded my head when I read the article. You see, I am one of
them. I know I should. I even have an exercise that I like and is
fun. So why don't I do what I know makes me feel better and is fun?

My own answer consists of several things, but mostly it's because I
don't plan exercise into my day.

I like Elizabeth's plan to "walk the walk." I'm not as willing as
Elizabeth to let you choose what I start on, though. So I will
choose one habit a week, and tell you what I'm working on, let you
know how it's going, and the difference in how I feel.

My habit this week is incorporating fun movement into my day.
Specifically, I'll be Nordic walking for half an hour a day, 5-6
days this week, most likely at the Utah Olympic Oval because it's
freakin' cold out here in Utah. I'm going to walk after dinner,
between 6:30 and 8:00 on the weekdays, and at 8 a.m. on the weekend
since we'll be AT the Oval anyway teaching class.

We'd love to hear what healthy habits you are working on
incorporating into your own life, and how adding these makes you
feel.

Because Elizabeth was so enthusiastic about the Green Goddess salad
dressing, I popped into the Cooking Light site to see if I could
find a recipe for it there that didn't require an avacado, because
sometimes they are difficult and expensive to find.

Here's what I found on Cooking Light. It comes with a recipe for
Cobb Salad, the whole things sounds good.

Cobb Salad with Green Goddess Dressing
From

Prepare and refrigerate the dressing up to one hour before serving.
The dressing also works as a delicious dip for grilled shrimp or cut-
up vegetables.

  Dressing:
1/2 cup plain fat-free yogurt
1/4 cup reduced-fat mayonnaise
2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
3 tablespoons chopped green onions
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
3 tablespoons white wine vinegar
2 teaspoons anchovy paste
1 teaspoon chopped fresh tarragon
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 garlic clove, minced

Salad:
8 cups torn romaine lettuce
1 cup trimmed watercress
1 1/2 cups chopped cooked chicken breast
2 tomatoes, each cut into 8 wedges (about 1 pound)
2 hard-cooked large eggs, each cut into 4 wedges
1/2 cup diced peeled avocado
1/4 cup (1 1/2 ounces) crumbled blue cheese

To prepare dressing, place first 11 ingredients in a blender or food
processor; process until smooth. Chill.
To prepare salad, combine lettuce and watercress in a large bowl.
Place 2 cups lettuce mixture on each of 4 plates. Arrange 6
tablespoons chicken, 4 tomato wedges, 2 egg wedges, 2 tablespoons
avocado, and 1 tablespoon cheese over each serving. Serve each salad
with 1/4 cup dressing.

Yield: 4 servings

I am always looking for tasty ways to top salads or to make dip for
raw veggies. This Cesear Salad Dressing sounds tasty and very easy
to make. I got this off the Eating Well recipe site. I also posted
a copy of it in our Recipes file.

This dressing has just 13 calories and less than half a gram of fat
per tablespoon, compared to 115 calories and 12 grams of fat for its
traditional counterpart.

Makes about 1 cup

ACTIVE TIME: 10 minutes

TOTAL TIME: 10 minutes

EASE OF PREPARATION: Easy

1 clove garlic, crushed
1/3 cup low-fat cottage cheese
1/2 cup nonfat plain yogurt
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
5 teaspoons white-wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/8 teaspoon salt, or to taste
Freshly ground pepper to taste

Puree garlic and cottage cheese in a blender or food processor until
smooth. Add yogurt, Parmesan, vinegar and Worcestershire and pulse
to blend. Season with salt and pepper.

NUTRITION INFORMATION: Per tablespoon: 13 calories; 0 g fat (0 g
sat, 0 g mono); 1 mg cholesterol; 1 g carbohydrate; 1 g protein; 0 g
fiber; 62 mg sodium.

Hi, All!

I've been giving this a lot of thought and have decided to set
myself up as a guinea pig for the 12-in-12 Challenge. Here's how it
works:

I will select 2 or 3 habits from our list and set up a Poll and let
each of you vote to determine which of those habits I'll start
with. I'll post periodic updates throughout the week to let you
know how I'm doing.

Each week, I'll repeat the process, letting you choose the next
habit that I incorporate into my routine, and I'll continually keep
you apprised of my progress.

During the entire process, I'll track my overall health, my blood
pressure, my fasting blood sugar levels, my weight, my general diet,
how I feel, and (gulp) my measurements.

Why am I doing this? One simple reason: If I'm gonna talk the
talk, I better walk the walk!

So, watch for the first poll. I hope to have it set up by mid-week
(maybe Donna can do that?) and I plan to "go live" on Monday of next
week. I'm actually looking forward to this.

Happy Walking!

E
