Hi folks,

Free weight Robbo here from the land of Oz with some training
updates for those interested in free weights application of static
contraction training, mainly 90% vegetarian diets and cardio mixed
with weight programmes.

I've added incline bench presses and shrugs to my workouts.

I was only doing delt presses, pull downs, leg & toe presses, and ab
crunches.

As I reported previously my delt presses weights exploded. THey have
continued to increase so that I now push 145kg x 10 secs.

I'm pulling lat pulldown stacks 118kg x 29 secs.

The shrugs have been brutal, especially with the 1-tonne hooks.
Previously 2 weeks between full body workout and was shrugging 175kg
x 10 secs -> next fortnight x 20 secs!

I've enjoyed incline presses, have also increased in just the 3
workouts they have been included (over 1 1/2 months of training).

Strangely I have dropped legs off the list. I've been running
according to heart rate zones 120 - 145bpm over 45 mins x4-5 per
week. When I got to train legs they were buggered. Although the
other day I did some high reps 30-45 on 45 degree leg press, holding
at lower position, and exploding up.

I'm happy that I've dropped 3.5 kilos in almost a month and have
continued to gain strength. I've been eating approx x12 salads per
week, pig out massively after workouts, and also drink 1-2 greens
mixed drinks during, before and after workouts.

Although, last workout was the 1st time I didn't make gains on the
delt press in smith machine. I went 5 secs under previous.

It has been hard to balance 1 whole body training as my delts and
lats were gearing up for 2-3 week rests and then I added chest and
shrugs which would onlt require 1 & then 2 weeks after a while.

So I decided to fit it all together in one workout. I realise that
even though all the other groups increased, escept biceps too, been
stuck on 45kg x5 for months now, I will increase rest periods to 2
1/2 & perhaps 3 weeks.

Too much recovery and growth time is much better than just/almost
enough growth & no recovery.

By the way I have not taken the alkaline creatine for approx 2
months. I'll probably give that another cycle in the coming months.

To sum it up I've been enjoying the strength gains, and measurable
like progress has been made. I'm loving the running, sometimes even
get goosebumps and cold shivers, which at first I thought was bad,
but they tell me it's the 'runner's high'! Awesome!

Lift up folks, and enjoy the process!!!

Rob

4 weeks since my last A set and 12 weeks since my last B set
Up on all exercises over the last B set, overall up 3% over last B
set (admittedly not a high water mark for comparison....)

Seated Curl 234 +17
Ab Crunch 273 +10
Lat pull 281 +8
Deadlift 705 +1
Shrug 516 +37

Happy to keep the deadlift over 700 and to get the shrug over 516.
A 4 week cycle seems to be working well for now. These are still
not all time best marks but moving in the right direction. I have
been doing Pace style cardio for the last couple of weeks as well on
a cross trainer using a heart rate monitor. After a warm up I go as
hard as I can until my pulse breaks 150 then coast until it falls
below 130 and repeat twice more. Takes about 13 minutes all
together. No doubt I will be svelt in no time.

Best to all - Jim

Dwayne thanks for the great advice.

rbuser

Dwayne supplied a great solution.

Also, how close to you is the base when you're in this position?

As your seated and your tail bone is flush. Your legs extended
outward and flush or flat on the bench seat.

Now pull the base to you feet. Feet flat, butt against the bench.
Put your feet on the floor, and bring in the base 12-13 notches/teeth.

Sometimes people are leaning forward and the angle of the knees is
less than 120-130 degress. This means the base is too close. And
they could actually stand for the base to moved away from them a
little.

The reason your numbers are lower, often significantly lower, is
because you really want to try and target the quads and legs rather
than having the muscles of the back assisting.

So you ARE probably maxing out, but now your using primarily muscles
in the legs.

ANYONE using placing their back flush against the bench is "cheating"
as far as the number indication. Its not accurate to say 2,000 leg
press if the back is flat (i.e. pete and his sons back in their
video).

Someone told me of a guy on you tube using EF equipment. His leg
press video is a PERFECT exmple of an INCORRECT leg press. By the
way, his entire workout is incorrect...

So if you can get som epadding to support your tail bone area and or
adjust the base for best position you'll be in business

All the best,

Shawn

Hello,

I had one of the people I work with have the same problem, so I made
a pad out of the material that is used to cover gym floors. You can
purchase it at Lowes or Home Depot. I doubled it up and glued the two
sheets together and cut a hole where your tailbone would contact the
pad. This fixed the problem and allowed her to give a maxium effort
with out any pain. I will dig out my digital camera and post a pic in
the next few days.

Shawn,

I've been following the videos for the leg press, and doing the slight
forward position to ensure the lower back is flush against the back
cushion and seat.

Now what I experience is a tremendous amount of pressure on the
tailbone area when I'm pressing. Whereas I used to be able to get up
to about 2000 lbs, the forward lean has redirected my force much lower
and I have to pull back because of the pain generated on the tailbone.

Am I doing something wrong? I'm losing a couple of hundred pounds of
force this way due to having to back off, so that means, of course,
that I'm not maxxing out.

Has anyone noticed how quickly Pete or whomever, disabled comments on
the youtube video.

He was seriously slammed. Some people will never understand the
benefits of this type of training...

Also pete claim to have 100's of 1000's of trainees you would think his
video would have 10's of thousands of hits by now.

Hmm

Car lifting. I have to give Pete credit.
Wow what a great marketing stunt. Lets face it watching a car being

Hey if they take the tour on the road I'll want to get some video of

Well, I don't know about obese. He has more of a power lifter
physique perhaps. Still strong none the less.

And yes, many MIT trainees can do as much and more do a full range
press of 2300 lbs.
Can't argue with the math, out of my league on that one. I thought
it was strange to see the angle on his creation too , because Pete
always has mentioned how inaccurate leg press equipment is due to
angles. Hmmm.

As far as bending knees. I don't know if anyone on the planet could
leg press 2300lbs dead weight full range. THAT would be impressive.

I can do over 2300 lbs (or at least have in the past) but not even
half that in full range. Of ocurse nor would I want to try. I'd
rather keep the family jewels in tact, as opposed to shooting across
the weight room.

Like many of you I own the 1-Ton Hooks. I think they're great and I
absolutely coudln't have made certains gains without them.

I put off trying out the Hauling Hooks even though the guy claims
they're better the 1Ton Hooks.

Well I've used the Haulin Hooks for about 3-4 weeks now. I ordered
the 1200lb pair. Immediately I coudl tell a difference once I
tightened one on my wrist. Somehow its quite a bit tighter than the
1 TON Hooks, (gee, maybe this is why the guy said his are better
because they don't slip).

Anyway, I love thw alternate use. One can use the actual "hooks" or
the strap. Like myself, I'm sure several people have used a strap to
wrap aroudn the wrist and the other end wrapped around the barbell.
This is the same concept with one HUGE exception...the padding around
the wrist.

I was able to do several 500lb PLUS lat pull, and an all time high
747 dead lift.

My hand isn't wide enough to really get a good grip on the 1 Ton
Hooks. With the haulin Hooks my hands fit easily around the hooks,
and of course utilizing the straps is a snap for anyone.

So, to summarize.

Hauling Hooks....

Better Fit
Easier Grip
2 methods-Straps or Hooks
Very Easy to adjust for bigger hands
Much less "slipping"

Just my 2 cents.

All the best

Yeah it is kind of cool.

There are a LOT of people who can do that and more as a result of
strong range partials.

Pete has been at this type of lifting before his son was born. How
amazing that his can do what Pete does. Pretty Awesome!

Pete's video also gives a clear picture of the difference between how
he and his son (and many others of course, I'm sure) perform leg
presses with conventional equipment i.e. using their back.

Not how to properly train using EF or 1 REP GYM equipment. Don't
believe me...

The next time you do a leg press keep your back flat against the
bench pad and go all out. THEN do a proper "leg" press by leaning
forward to get at least the upper 1/3 of your back off the pad.

I can't wait to see the other feats of strength that his video will
generate in others to share.

All the best,

Shawn

Paul,

I definately felt spent for 2-3 minutes after each exercise, somewhat like you
describe - but perhaps my intensity is not as good as yours. I was born with
more slow twitch (endurance-type fibers) and used to road race (bikes) and could
always run long distances. I am 6'1" and weighed only about 160 a few years
ago, but now 190 - still with 12% body fat.

I will time my rest between MIT and free weights next time. My recovery is
sketchy because besides MIT and weights, I also kitesurf a lot (see pix of me
jumping) and do other sports to exertion (mountain bike, tennis, basketball,
etc). Today I did kitesurfing for four hours in 25 knot winds - and I am wiped.
I am making some progress but these other activities interfere with my recovery
and make my training and recovery cycles much less than an exact science. Did I
mention that I am 50 and not a kid.

I am not sure why I was able to lift more after MIT, but I felt like more of
my mucle fibers or motor units were turned on and available to do the job. It's
like they were all awake and at attention. I don't feel that I fully deplete my
glycogen in the 7-10 sec on my MIT workouts and was not aware that Little
thought that EF/MIT trainees.

... more later - need sleep...

   Ed

ps Maybe I will eliminate the weights for the next couple of months and go to
pure MIT/EF because of the lower frequency, less time, less wear and tear - and
more time for kitesurfing and mountain biking.

Hey Ed,

As always interesting and thought provoking stuff. It
s very interesting that you mentioned that you felt strong and
refreshed after your MIT workout. In my own experience I'm shattered,
completely exhausted and occasionally even blackout from the intenstiy
of the workout. After I go all out, there is nothing left and I just
lie there dead for a while. The reason for this in my opinion is two
fold, one complete muscular and neurological exhaustion and secondly
the total depletion of muscle glyocgen (Re: John Little's Glycogen
Theory).

I would suggest the reason you were able to do a stronger full range
techqniue post MIT was becasue of the increased blood flow and
neurological activity in the muscles being used, without however
having come close to glycogen depletion.

Furthermore I would also suggest that the reason you couldn't
replicate this feat the next week was not because you hadn't recovered
sufficently. I'm curious as to why you felt you had adequately
recpovered in just 7 days?

Can you expand on that?
As regards your current mixed program - how are you finding the
results in terms of lower body fat, increased muscle mass, full range
strength etc?

As always I look forward to your input.

All the best,

Paul J.
