Nathan-chlorine

Hi Paul,
My name is Lisa and my daughter Madsion is 8 years old and was diagnosed with Evan's Syndrome a little over 3 years ago. She has had many ups and down and is now currently on 6mp which is an oral chemo. This is the second time she has used this drug and we seem to have success with it.
I am a strong believer that chlorine has a lot to do with Madison's platelets crashing. When she was originally diagnosed whe was in swimming lessons. I can say that almost every time we have had issues with platelets crashing, it has involved chlorine. The latest was a few weeks ago. I normally do not let her in public pools but she went on vacation with my parents and went swimming 3 days in a row. Prior to that her platelets were over 200,000 and she came down quite a bit after the swimming. Her doctors do not agree with me since there is nothing proven but I strongly believe that the chlorine can be a trigger for some people. I have spoke with 2 other mothers that had children in swimming lessons at the time their child was diagnosed.
Good luck and hope his counts come up. I know how hard the steroids can be. Lisa

No task before me is greater than the POWER behind me!!

hi folks

I have been quiet for a long time but still read all the emails with interest. Nathan is now 13 and he's turning into a young man. We stay in Scotland, for anyone who doesn't remember us! Nathan first developed Evans in 2001. He's had 2 episodes, last one in 2006.

Anyway he has just relapsed again (3rd time) with low haemoglobin and today started on 50mg daily prednisolone again. I'll need to find the fridge lock and adapt to even more teenage attitude!

I'd really like to know what triggers these episodes.... a fortnight ago Nathan went swimming for the first time in a long time. After his swimming his eyes were really sore (we suspected it was a reaction to chlorine) and he wasn't able to open them for a while. I'm sure i read a while back emails about chlorine and whether chlorine could cause relapse with Evans.

Am I clutching at straws here? I feel like keeping Nathan away from the swimming pool forever!
