Thanks for taking the time to respond.
Here's the latest. After talking with his "adult" hematologist and consulting, by phone, with his hematologist from CHOP, Micah was released from the hospital. The local hem told us that the only reason the surgeon who saw him wanted to take the spleen was because it is so enlarged, she would not be able to take his gall bladder laparoscopically...not enough room left in his abdomen for the gas...he also said that Micah's spleen was unlikely to shrink, while our CHOP doc says that it may be enlarged due to the gall bladder inflammation and may resolve itself. His spleen has been enlarged in the past, but has not been chronically enlarged...
This is our current plan;
- Micah will be vaccinated for pneumoccocal pneumonia and influenza
- we will find out if CHOP will perform the gall bladder surgery so that if his spleen needs to be taken as well, the medical personnel who know him best are on site
- try to schedule the surgery for some time in March...evaluate the size of the spleen at that time and determine the type and extent of the surgery needed...but, the gall bladder must go
The good news is that his counts are good!!! Platelets at 125,000!!!
He's also waiting to hear the results of a series of job interviews which would lead to a permanent position at Merck.
Keep your fingers crossed. I'm just trying to hold on tight to what's left of my sanity.
Wishing all of you less stress.
Shelly
