Re: [EvansSyndrome] Any body with Hemolytic Anemia

Hello.  My name is Mykella.  My son Gage was diagnosed with Hemolytic Anemia when he was 4 yrs old.  They did the steroid treatment and gave him blood and it worked.  Then when he was 7, he started to have problems again.  Once again they started to do the steroids and blood.  He never got completely well that time.  One day he fell on the playground and hit his shins and he got two huge knots the size of baseballs on them.  We went to The Children's Hospital and found out that not only was his hemoglobin not right but now his platelets were low also.  For 2 yrs we tried steroids, giving blood, IVIG, giving platelets, and even a form of chemotherapy with no luck.  The last step would be to have his spleen removed.  So in Nov. of 2003, he had his spleen taken out and miraculously he has been fine ever since.  All levels are normal.  He has to take Pennicillin twice a day from now on and anytime he gets a fever over 101 degrees then he has to go immediatly to the ER for antibiotics.  He had an ear infection last year and the start of pneumonia this year, but the antibiotics cleared them both up and now things are fine.
I don't know if any of this helped you but don't give up!!  Just because one thing doesn't work, doesn't mean that something else won't.   There are so many things that the doctors can try, you just have to be patient.  If you need to talk you can email me any time!

Lots of luck to you and yours,
Mykella Clouse
