Re: Psychological Disorders

Hi Folks!

For those interested, here are some reasons why "...it can be very damaging to be diagnosed with/treated for something you do not have when you are a target of abuse..."

The primary reason family members wanted me labeled with a disorder was so that I would be put on medication (an unusually high dosage I might add) in order to shut me up (so I would not tell outsiders about the abuse and the illegal activity - such as drug usage - going on in the household), and so no one would listen to me or believe me on the occasion I was able to speak up despite being on pills. This was so damaging because the abuse and illegal activity were not acknowledged, nothing was done to put an end to these, and I did not receive the treatment I really needed at the time (for victimization).

In other words, if a family member wanted to rage, hit, steal, or what-have-you then me being medicated was not going to prevent this. All the pills did was make their behavior and activities not impact me as much (at the time! I still have some bad memories) so that I was not as reactive as I'd normally be. I.e., my most common reaction to being abused when not medicated was to become very flustered and cry. Whereas, when highly medicated I'd just kind of sit there like a zombie, with a dazed look in my eyes, and take it.

The medication began to grossly impair my ability to think clearly, absorb/retain information, communicate effectively, and made me repeatedly nod off (fall asleep even while in the midst of a conversation with someone, to use but one example!). These days, some things might go right over my head for a time because I can be such a gullible person, but at least my mind is clear as a bell!

I hope this post helps those in a similar predicament! Thank you.

Terri
