if one denies any kind of self,
saying that the cosmos is totally "other,"
then one is assuming
that there is nothing with any long-term existence
whose happiness deserves anything more
than quick, short-term attempts at finding pleasure.
The imperative in this case
would be to pursue immediate pleasure
with as little effort as possible,
thus aborting any sustained effort
to bring about an end to suffering."
