Gold, Frankincense And Myrrh,,,,The First Gifts of Christmas

And they came into the house and saw the young child with Mary
his mother; and they fell down and worshipped him; and opening
their treasures they offered unto him gifts, gold and
frankincense and myrrh. (ASV)

Imagine for a moment that you are there...

You've come to visit, pay your respects and to be the first
to worship the new born King. As was the custom, you would bring
gifts...But, what gifts would you bring Him? Certainly you might
choose gold, but frankincense and myrrh? Of all the possible
gifts the magi might offer, why frankincense and myrrh? What was
it about these two essential oils that they would choose them
over all other riches? Until recently, that question has been
a mystery to me. But now I know! Now I understand why!

To modern man, frankincense and myrrh are just fragrances,
something one may burn as an incense to enjoy. But 2,000 years
ago, these two oils played a much more important role in the
life of mankind.


Historical Background:

So important to the economy back then, these two oils were
actually considered more precious than gold, playing a major
role in commerce throughout the Mediterranean region.

As far back as man's earliest recorded history, essential
oils played an important role in commerce. Genesis 37: 25 records a
caravan on its way to Egypt from Gilead, carrying balm and myrrh. The
implication is that vigorous trade was already established.

At the height of the trade, some 3000 tons of frankincense
were exported annually through this region to different parts of
the world. Pliny, writing in the 1st century AD, claimed that
control of the frankincense trade had made the south Arabians
and Egyptians one of the richest people in the world.

Recent excavation of the ancient city called Gilead, has
unearthed the remains of a fortress like building used for the
manufacture of balsam oil. This "balm of Gilead" noted in
Jeremiah 8:22, had long been famous in antiquity for its nearly
miraculous properties to HEAL WOUNDS. In fact, the balsam oil of
Gilead was so famous that the conquering Roman emperor Titus
(79-81 A.D.), after conquering Gilead, displayed branches from
Gilead's balsam trees in his triumphal march through Rome.

So precious was this oil to the commerce of Gilead, the exact
manufacturing process was kept a closely guarded secret. So much so,
archaeologists uncovered an inscription carved into the floor of a
local synagogue that reads, "Whoever reveals the secret of the village
to the gentiles, the one whose eyes roam over the entire earth and
see's what is concealed will uproot this person and his seed from
under the sun." (see Biblical Archaeology Review, Sep/Oct 1996 issue)

Sometime about the time Europe and the isles that were to
become the British Isles were becoming Christianized, people
started to lose the use of essential oils. With no way to rid
themselves of the insects and fight infections, they fell victim
to many illnesses. Some even believe this played a major part in
the severity of the plagues that devastated Europe during the
Dark Ages.

Remarkably, during the time of the black plagues of Europe,
thieves who robbed the bodies of the dead were not infected.
These robbers, known as spice traders and perfumers, bathed in
such oils as pine, frankincense, balsam, clove, cinnamon and
rosemary. Imagine the trust these people must have had in the
oils, that they were so willing to expose themselves to a virus
that had close to a 100% kill rate.

And so it is, the ancients knew and undertood essential oils
in a way we are only beginning to understand today. That brings
us back to my original question? Why would the magi offer gifts
of frankincense and myrrh over all other riches?

The Riches of Frankincense and Myrrh:

Today we know the following: FRANKINCENSE (Greek: Olibanum;
Latin: Boswellia carteri or Boswellia thurifera; oil is distilled
from oleo-gum-resin of the frankincense tree. Its constituents are
monoterpenes, pinene, limonene, sesquiterpines, gurjunene and terpenes
alcohols. Therapeutically, it is being used in European hospitals for
its anticatarrhal, antitumoral, immune-stimulating and antidepressant
qualities.

Frankincense gained its legendary name as a "holy anointing
oil" from the ancients, because they found when it was rubbed on
sick people they would get well almost immediately. Additionally
they also found that when Frankincense is burned and inhaled, it
increased their spiritual awareness and made them feel more "in
tune" spiritually.

Modern science now shows us that frankincense has the
ability to increase the oxygen around the pineal and pituitary
gland, therefore stimulating the pineal gland through which we
communicate spiritually. Practically speaking it has a centering
effect on the emotions. It can slow respiration, thus helping
your body calm and center itself. It's a wonderfully calming oil.

Frankincense has a delightfully sweet and slightly spicy
odor. It can act as an expectorant, soothing congestion. It is a
wonderful oil to blend into facial creams or oils to reverse
aging skin. The ancients used it as well for embalming.

MYRRH: Smurna, hence the name "Smyrna," is a word of Semitic
origin, from a root meaning "bitter." It is a gum resin from a
shrubby tree, which grows in Yemen and neighboring regions of
Africa. The fruit is smooth and somewhat larger than a pea.
The color of myrrh varies from pale reddish-yellow to
reddish-brown or red. It constutients are sesuiterpines,
cetones and aldehydes

Myrrh is antinfectious and supportive of the immune system.
the Arabian people find it benefical for skin conditions; such
as athletes foot, chapped and cracked skin, eczema, ringworm,
wounds and wrinkles. It is used to help with asthma, bronchitis,
catarrh, coughs, gingivitus, mouth ulcers and sore throat. It
may also help alleviate diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, and
hemorrhoids. It also decongests the prostrate and normalizes
hyper-thyroid problems.

It is thought the myrrh that Christ refused just before His
death was intended to deaden pain. The ancients embalmed their
dead with myrrh, because of its antibacterial qualities.

The most precious gift one person can give another is life!
The three magi offered exactly that to the Christ child, gifts
of life-saving essential oils. Think about it a moment, Joseph
and Mary may not have been dirt poor, but neither did they have
the means to afford a luxury reserved for the rich and royalty.

2,000 years ago, Frankincense and Myrrh were precious
beyond the value of gold. Their healing powers were viewed then
as "magical." As people of today come to discover the wonderful
healing powers of these two ancient oils, they too will come to
realize the three magi spoken of by Matthew, were indeed,"wise
men," with a knowledge beyond what we today perceive as
"primitive." Perhaps it is true as they say...Yesterday.s
wisdom is today's destiny! END

3. People and Oils:

"On Monday morning, Sept. 9th, 1996 my 11 year old daughter
woke up with tonsillitis. Her tonsils were red and swollen. her
temperature was 100 and climbing. I put one drop of Young Living
Essential Lemon Oil, one drop of Young Living Essential Peppermint Oil
and one drop of Young Living Essential Frankincense Oil in the palm of
my hand, mixed them clockwise and applied to each side of her throat
and to the bottom of her feet. I did this twice a day. On Tuesday she
was worse, more swelling and now she had pus spots on each tonsil. Her
temperature was 102. Still I persisted. Late Tuesday night her fever
broke. Wednesday it never got above 99.4 and the swelling and color
looked better. My daughter was much better on Friday and returned to
school only to find out she could not return without a doctor's note.
We took her to our doctor the following morning. There was very little
swelling, temperature of 99 and no pus pockets on the tonsils. He said
she was fine and did not need a prescription. I described her
condition at the beginning of the week and he said he would have
recommended removing her tonsils had he seen her then. The doctor was
amazed at her recovery."

"On December 10, 1991 I slipped and fell during a rain storm,
hitting my head on the running board of my truck as I went down. I
also suffered other injuries. I complained of severe headaches where I
hit my head, and on June 5, 1992 a blood vessel ruptured in the stem
of my brain causing an almost fatal stroke. As a result of the stroke
I am paralyzed on the left side - arm and leg. I also lost most of my
