from Kimberly Read & Marcia Purse Bipolar disorder (manic depression) can become so incapacitating that work is impossible. Therefore, issues with Social Security Disability arise. Found here are resources and information for navigating the difficult process of applying for and receiving disability.
I Can't Hold a Job! What Do I Do? For many people with bipolar disorder, the ability to work is seriously compromised. Debilitating depressions, manic-based bad decisions, struggles with medications and side effects as well as psychotic features, panic attacks and other extreme symptoms of this illness make it very difficult for some to obtain or hold a job for very long. A possible solution may be disability - Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
What Is Disability? Disability is a very broad term that compares actual ability to normal functioning. It is also used to refer to a number of federal and state programs that provide assistance to those who are disabled. The two most common programs that fall under the umbrella of disability are Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Medicare and Medicaid are also components of these programs.
Is Bipolar Disorder a Qualified Condition for Disability? What is the US Social Security Administration's position on granting Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to those with bipolar disorder? Social Security does understand -- at least as far as one can tell by reading its rules -- that mental health issues can be very serious.

1) Is Klonopin Addictive? My psychiatrist says that Klonopin is a mood stabilizer and a benzodiazepine that loses its effectiveness and needs to be titrated up. He would rather that I take Klonopin for taking the edge off my racing thoughts with the complimentary rock concert background music that is ever so present in my head. So, how addictive is this med? How much of a mood stabilizer is it?
2) Freaked by Weight My boyfriend tells me I am crazy to think I am fat. I look at parts of my body with full disgust. I used to be a gym freak. I was obsessed. A therapist told me that my constant gym visits were causing manias. That made sense, but now I won't even walk into a gym because I no longer have muscles. Anyone feel this way?
3) Worried About Having an Episode Pretty sure I have bipolar disorder. I've read about "meltdowns" and "breakdowns" in these forums. I have avoided going on meds because I keep thinking, "It's really not that bad; I can control it." But I worry about what these horrible episodes are that are the final straw for many of you. Am I headed for one?

from Kimberly Read & Marcia Purse Bipolar disorder does not mean someone cannot have successful, fulfilling career. However, symptoms may, at times, interfere with a person's ability to fulfill responsibilities. Also, many people are uncertain whether they should reveal to their bosses that they have this disorder. In this issue, we offer a variety of discussions regarding bipolar disorder on the job.
Get Over It! My job performance was suffering. I had great difficulty making decisions, a serious problem in an assistant supervisor. I had trouble organizing my own work. My sharp-tongued supervisor had become extremely critical; faced with a depressed and anxious employee whose behavior had changed dramatically, the best the supervisor could come up with was GET OVER IT. There are some bosses who simply will not recognize an emotional problem or a mental illness, even when it is staring them right in the face.

from Kimberly Read & Marcia Purse I was just reviewing my schedule for tomorrow, which begins in the predawn hours (My least favorite time of day!) as I run headlong from one school to another for new school-year orientations and ending with back-to-school shopping in the evening. Um ... Yeah? I should be elated - a return to order and schedules. But there is so much to do and to consider! Here are a few tools and resources to help.
The School Days Begin Back-to-school planning for parents of children with special needs such as bipolar disorder can be a bit overwhelming. So many things to consider! I now take Effexor XR 150 mg once per day, Lithium 300mg 3X per day, Clonazepam 0.5 3X per day, Seroquel 50 mg 1X per day and Trazadone 50 mg 1X per day. Doesn't this seem like a lot? Am I really that crazy??!
3) How Long of a Wait? I have my judicial review hearing for SSDI this Thursday. How long do I have to wait for a decision? Also, is it acceptable to bring notes with me to the hearing? from Nancy Schimelpfening In the past, cod liver oil was commonly given to children and it turns out it might just have been a good practice. Cod liver oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which we are now learning are important in brain health and may play an important role in preventing depression. Experts say, however, that fish oil may be a better choice than cod liver oil. In addition to the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, cod liver oil also contains vitamins A and D, which could build up to dangerous levels if you take enough cod liver oil to get a therapeutic amount of its fatty acids.

from Kimberly Read & Marcia Purse An unfortunate reality is that bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses are often stigmatized. Many people fail to seek help because they fear being labeled as crazy, dangerous, unreliable, or even contagious. Why is this, and what can be done about it?
Perspective on Guns and Mental Illness The Virginia Tech shootings in April 2007 brought the issue of guns and mental illness very much in the public eye. The U.S. Congress, responding, passed a measure to strengthen existing laws regarding the purchase of firearms by some people with mental illnesses. Speaking about the House bill, National Rifle Association president Wayne LaPierre used language that anyone with any form of mental illness would find extremely offensive - "mentally defective."
Dump the Stigma and Focus on Recovery Before he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Andy Behrman knew something was wrong but no one else recognized it. With the diagnosis of manic depression came instant stigma - he even mentally stigmatized himself.
It's All in Your Head How often have you been accused of whining or being a hypochondriac? Do people think you are just a complainer, an attention-seeker, when depression makes it difficult for you to cope with daily life? Are you told that "there is absolutely nothing wrong with you"? Do people tell you to "get over yourself"? I am sure that everyone with bipolar disorder has had those completely thoughtless things said which we can quote verbatim five, ten and even thirty years down the road.

1) Is this the Abilify? I started on Abilify maybe a month ago. I'm on 15mg along with 100mg Seroquel at night and my other meds. My mood is definitely elevated, with less need for sleep, and I'm extremely irritable with sudden rages and tears. I desperately don't want this to be the Abilify, but I've heard reports of such reactions. I think that most people's responses will confirm this but am just hoping not.
2) Am I Bipolar? Is it possible that I am just under so much stress and that the paranoia and fast talking have nothing to do with bipolar? That maybe I just need a break? I really don't want to have bipolar. It makes me want to cry thinking I might have it. I just can't take my paranoia anymore. I need help and I don't know where to begin.
3) What do you do for fun? How do you answer this question? I'm 34 going on 35 shortly and I don't really have any fun in my life. When I think about it, I go to work, come home, watch TV, come here, read, go housework, and go to bed. That's my life. What can I do to add some excitement to my life? I live in a boring little town - everyone my age is married, has kids, etc. I feel so boring.
The hardest thing I had to deal with in sobriety was my own anger and the violence I had lived through in my childhood. There is a strong possibility that it will not receive FDA approval due to reports of increased suicidal thoughts in patients taking the drug--even in those who have not previously been depressed.
