  Bipolar Disorder

from Kimberly Read & Marcia Purse
I was just reviewing my schedule for tomorrow, which begins in the predawn hours (My least favorite time of day!) as I run headlong from one school to another for new school-year orientations and ending with back-to-school shopping in the evening. Um ... Yeah? I should be elated - a return to order and schedules. But there is so much to do and to consider! Here are a few tools and resources to help.

In the Spotlight
The School Days Begin
Back-to-school planning for parents of children with special needs such as bipolar disorder can be a bit overwhelming. So many things to consider! How early should I start the morning struggles to get my kid out the door? Oh, I forgot to get the doctor to write the note for the school nurse about my daughter's prescription. Will my son's teaching team really understand what it means to be 14 with bipolar disorder?

School Tools
If your child has a mental illness such as bipolar disorder, there are special resources available in the United States to help children cope with school.

School Medication Administration
When children need to take medicine at school, how likely are they to get the right medication at the right time and in the right amount? What are your rights as a parent, and how can you help prevent mistakes and keep your child safe?

We have three active forums full of people just like you - people who love to share their personal stories and experiences, people who just want to talk to other people who understand. Feel free to join these or any of the discussions.

1) Antidepressant Sensitivity
I have a diagnosis of BP II. However, it all seems unclear. I did get high on antidepressants, but what's the difference between being sensitive to meds and being bipolar? I mean maybe I am just very sensitive to antidepressants and maybe everyone would go manic if given high enough doses of antidepressants?

2) Isn't This a Lot?
After seeing a new psychiatrist in May, I was diagnosed with Bipolar II. I now take Effexor XR 150 mg once per day, Lithium 300mg 3X per day, Clonazepam 0.5 3X per day, Seroquel 50 mg 1X per day and Trazadone 50 mg 1X per day. Doesn't this seem like a lot? Am I really that crazy??!

3) How Long of a Wait?
I have my judicial review hearing for SSDI this Thursday. How long do I have to wait for a decision? Also, is it acceptable to bring notes with me to the hearing? My memory is not what it used to be and when asked why I can't work, I draw a blank after a couple reasons. When I have time to brainstorm about it, I came up with many more.
