Rebecca,
Does Dore take medicad for payment for testing?  We would like to have Tait tested to see how far he has advanced and what other programs he needs to listen to etc.  Would it be better if I phoned you to discuss this.  Also how do I check how many protocols we have in our I-Pod.

Hi Norma,

I wish Hallowell did take medicade or any kind of insurance but they do not.  Feel free to phone me to discuss further.  I am pretty sure your unit only has the 5 protocols but how you check is if your unit has 2 different optimal proformance protools. I believe it say optimal proformance I and optimal profromance II.

We were just trained on this really cool reading program. They say it is the top of the paramid meaning when you are done with Dore and listening then you would want to try it.  I can't wait to start my son on it and see how he does.  It was really amazing to see how bad I did on the testing.  Since Dore and listening I can read better but I still hate it.  In this testing it  tracks how you read and where your eyes go if you skip around, if you read and re-read a line and how long you fixate on each word.

More on the reading program as we figure it all out.

Hope all is well with all of you,

xo Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

I am very interested in the reading program you describe. My son finished Dore
about 1 1/2 years ago, during his freshman year in college. When he first
finished, he thought it helped, but this year has been extremely difficult for
him--both getting his work done on time, and particularly reading. His work is
very good, but he's almost always behind, he continues to procrastinate, he
often has trouble following what's going on in class discussions, and he can
never finish his reading.

We all realize that college reading is different from reading a novel, but it's
really agony for him. He's very slow and he has a hard time skimming for
information. I notice that he doesn't even read easy things like emails (mine,
of course!)or short articles. Writing is also very difficult. He's actually an
excellent writer, but it takes him a very long time to put his thoughts together
(once he gets himself to start, that is).

I'm very happy to read that Dore is helping school-aged students, but what about
college students, who have different needs and who then need to apply their
college skills to the working world? My son is really hard on himself, which
makes it doubly stressful on him. A good reading program might help, but I'm not
sure the improvements that seemed to have happened with Dore have been retained.
In fact, they seem to have fled.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jane Gould

A few of the things you mentioned like trouble following class discussion  sounds like he has some auditory processing problems. Remember the vestibular system is what coordinates all other sensory avenues including the movements of the eye. If he is having trouble processings sound (he could still have good hearing but not good perception of all sounds) this could be a real problem not just to listening but to reading. The auditory program My Sensory Solutions is really good in this area. That's why lots of people are taking that as the next step. The Reading plus program will help also with the motor funcitons of the eye and with reading speed but if the vestibular is still not up to speed it will not do. The reading program is pretty inexpensive and can be done with the listening program. Olga

Thanks for your response, Olga. Where can I find more information about the
Reading Plus program? It sounds like it might be useful for my son to try it
over summer vacation.

And I think my son's auditory processing is poor because he starts focusing on
something that he's just heard and might need to think about more, then when the
discussion moves on, he's no longer paying attention. Would Sensory Solutions
help that?

Thanks again,
Jane

You may find that the reverse is true, he may stop paying attention because he cannot process what is going on because he is not percieveing the pitches of what is going on. But whichever comes first the "chicken or the egg" the problem with attention can be helped by improving the function of the vestibular system in many ways. My Sensory Solutions does that. But if you are interested in Reading plus we can certainly help with that. Call me at the Hallowell Center. 978-287-0810 Ext 127. Rebecca or I will be happy to give you more information. Olga

We need to remember that the problems we deal with in Programs like Dore are developmental. Some people's neurology is less developed than others. The more we stimulate and the more we exercise the more development we have. Your child seems to need more. I know two years of Dore have brought him part of the journey and that he is probably tired. My Sensory Solutions has been the next step for lots of people. It continues working on the cerebellum and the lateral halves of the brain but with stimulation more so than physical exercise. Many people that went so far on Dore have seen many more results on My Sensory Solutions. But that doesn't mean Dore or anything else you might have done did not help. You are on the right track and you have done a great job.  Its just that he needs more. Olga

By the way. The miracle belt sounds like it is very helpful because it helps them to access and be concious of their core (center of gravity) and because it adds support to areas that cue the brain into proper balance. It will probably help with body awareness (proprioception) for the same reason. So it is a good thing. What is better however is helping the body cue into the core without a belt. That is why as a Dore specialist I always encourage my clients to cue into their "belly button" or core when they do every exercise even the eye exercises. To cue the posture to be straight and to tuck in the core just a tiny bit activates the brain to know that balance is necessary. It alerts the whole system. It is the position of attention. When we do that day after day with every exercise it really makes for quick progress and it helps to really make that automatic in the brain. But some kids need more help with that and this may be a good way to do it. With my sensory issues a belt would have made me crazy as a child. But it may really help for others. Olga

Rebecca,  Thank you for your reply.  Since Hallowell doesn't take any kind of insurance we cannot afford to have our son tested.
I would like you to look on the internet about miracle belt.  Just go to miracle belt .  I have heard that it works really well or ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia etc.  I have a friend who said it has worked wonders on a relative of hers.
So far Dore and the i pod has helped  but our son still has quite a ways to go to be up to par on his math, reading and spelling.  He still has trouble with running.   He still has trouble and doesn't like it.  He has been working on the Dore program 2 years and 2 months.  I still don't want to give up and I don't want to put him on drugs as the Dr. and childrens hospital suggested.

Hope all is well with all of you,

xo Rebecca

Rebecca,
Does Dore take medicad for payment for testing?  We would like to have Tait tested to see how far he has advanced and what other programs he needs to listen to etc.  Would it be better if I phoned you to discuss this.  Also how do I check how many protocols we have in our I-Pod.
