Re: Anyone Out There Still On Dore?

This is the first time I have posted I think. I read the posts some
before we finished with the program this March 2008, but since then I
have not been reading them. I was out of the loop then, not
realizing that some of the centers have closed and re-opened and
others are just closed. Wow. Anyway, We never saw the huge quick
impovements. It actually took us two years to complete the program
with my daughter and I can certainly empathize with you that it can
be very hard to keep motivated...especially if you don't have an end
in sight. While my daughter went from reading small picture books at
age 10 to reading her first short chapter book just before she turned
12. This was very exciting. However, my daughter still does not
enjoy reading yet and it is still difficult for her. We had not had
a chance to get her extra tutoring which they recommended we do after
she finished, to fill in with insturction now that the cerebellum was
performing better...so at the start of this school year we had her
officially tested at school for the first time for a learning
disability. She did still qualify in reading/spelling. I don't know
how much extra attention she really gets because of it, but they have
allowed her to read shorter books, though now she is reading books
fairly close ther her grade level. The school we have her in still
reviews the basic phonograms and spelling rules. Well, a couple
weeks ago she was motivated to do some extra study on her spelling
list (she is 13 in 6th grade due to being kept back before we really
realized that she had dyslexia)...she missed 2 out of 31 or 32
words. I was amazed. Then this week, she got her first progress
report with all A's and B's! B in spelling and actually an A in
reading! I know Dore has helped her so much. It was not easy
sticking with it, but there is nothing else that we have done that
has her improvement could be attributed to. My daughter is much
happier and I am sad to hear that it is not as available anymore.
All I can say is, keep trying. I wish more children could have
access to it.

stick with it - for me and my son.  There have been a couple days
lately where I've remembered we needed to do exercises, but just
couldn't make myself get started.

consistent in the beginning and my son got his mental exercises in
May - right before the doors closed.  So while we've been doing the
exercises, we haven't had a single assessment while on mentals; I
have no idea where he started, so even when he does get assessed, we
won't know how much (or litlle) progress he's made.  We're in
California so there are no centers nearby and a trip to the East
Coast just isn't in the budget right now.
>

a sudden, my son - 14yrs, 8th grader - has taken total ownership of
his school work.  He handles all of his homework on his own and just
did a big history project where he scored 164/140 (24 points in extra
credit - that I didn't even know he did!)  At this moment, he has As
in everything but Algebra where he has a C (maybe when that grade
goes up I'll know we're done, LOL!)
>
> Tomorrow when he moans and complains about his exercises, I'm going
to have to remind him of what is accomplishing. ... in addition to
his grades, he also made the all-league, all-star team in water polo
and got the school's "champion" award for being a good student
and good citizen as well as good athlete (that was a really big deal).
