I was just thinking about all of you and am so glad to read that we are still a group -- of sorts.  My almost 14 year old son is in his 16th month of Dore and we've had two checkups at the Hallowell center since the business reorganization.  We, too, are going through a very difficult period of him not wanting to do the exercises, feeling that it's futile, and general kvetching.  I pointed out to him his great progress and that we are so close...why quit now, etc.  As he is a cross country runner, he'll probably pay attention to Olga's marathon analogy -- thanks!  Just the other day we were discussing his opposition to the exercises and he responded, "Must be a regression, Mom!"  I had to laugh at how he'd caught on to the lingo.   When do we know when to stop?  I've told him we will be dedicated to this through February (which will bring us to the 18 month mark), but hate to quit before we've really finished it.  Suggestions anyone?  Blessings to you all -- remember the way things were with your child and how far you've come.  Anne

Anyone Out There Still On Dore?

Posted by: "K." kflynn@...   kflynn37

Is anyone besides Rebecca still out there? It is a real downer that
this group does not seem to be up and running with the communication
and support everyone on the DORE program could truly use.

My daughter is 9 years old and has been on the program sincee the end
of February 2008. This means she has been on the program for almost
10 months. I have seen some wonderful changes but not as much in the
ADHD/Anxiety aspect as I had hoped for. She is getting to the point
she absolutely hates doing DORE each day. The excersizes are getting
a bit lengthier since it is harder now. We are in the final stages
for excersizes and hopefully will move into the mental excersizes
after next evaluation at the end of this month.

My daughter is making it much more difficult now to do the excersizes
since she gives both my husband and myself a very hard time when it
is time to do them. She is sick of them and have to say my husband
and I are at are wits end as well.

We are blessed the center we work with had re-opened and able to
continue her evals etc. Yes, I know there are others who have not
been able to get back to evals which I truly empathize with. The
children and parents who have been fortunate to have thier centers
reopen still need the support of others going through the program.

Does anyone have any success/rough pathc stories with thier children
with ADHD and maybe even the Anxiety? We are diligent with the
excersizes doing them every day. We may miss one or two excersizes
during the course of 7 weeks which is not bad at all.

Please let me know others are out there still doing the DORE program
that can share any feedback.

Thanks,

Kim

DoreTalk is still active Kim, and funnily enough there is a recent
posting about this very question.

The end is the hardest part since there is the tedium factor. But you knew this was a marathon when you started. It helped me to use the analogy of the marathon when I was on the program. A marathoner will run 26 miles to finish. 22 of those miles he runs on training. The next two miles he uses the last of his glucose and then it gets painful. The last two miles are run on shear will. He or she has come this far and by golly they are not going to throw all that away. They will finish. The laurel does not go to the one who stops short with the finish in sight. You have got to remind your daughter that she has done an amazing thing coming this far. She doesn't want to throw that all away when she only has 6 to 12 weeks to do. Talk to her about how you can make it fun. Talk about what you will do with the time you do not have to do exercises. Talk about what you have accomplished and how others do so much more to just look thin (hours a day in a
gym). Whatever you do be positive. Negativity is contageous. Set small goals and rewards along the way. (when we do the next two weeks we will go to or do such and such to celebrate. YOU CAN DO IT!!!! The worst is over. Don't skimp on the mental tasks. They are hard but they have a lot of benefit in themselves. What are you made of? This will test it. But you will find you are made of good stuff when its over and you will be proud of a job well done. DON'T GIVE UP!!! Olga

Hey Kim...I'm still here...It was a year back in Oct. for my 12 year old son. ....He has come down a dosage for his ADHD meds...looking to go down another dose probably when he has a break from school in Feb.  Would of done it sooner...but, he just started Middle School this year and a lot of changes come with that....He too has anxiety..... good news is that he doesn't take meds for that anymore and got up infront of his Social Studies class last week and did a presentation. ...that's big for him.  Last year in 5th grade he refused to do a presenation. ...So, there is light at the end of the tunnel...He is starting to fight with me more about doing them...but, I remind him of what's he's accomplished so far and that he is even closer to meeting his goal....which is to get off all his meds....he can't wait...he wears a patch rather then taking the oral meds and I have to get up an hour before he does to put it on so he could function in the a.m. I can't
wait just as much as he can't.....So, she can do it.....I am very firm and if he does his exercises not up to his potential... I start over....doing that a couple of times he knows I mean it.  I keep telling him that they don't have to be perfect, just his best effort...... I hope all works out with you and your daughter.... if she would like to jump on and ask Ryan or I any questions... .tell her to bring it on.....

Happy Holidays and Happy Exercising.. ..!!!!  Tell her to keep the faith....she can do it!!!!

Take care,

Kelly

Still here, not Doring anymore though. What you are describing is exactly
what we went through with our son. He was HORRIBLE about doing his exercises,
but we were on mentals for months...I think everyone gave good advice...just
keep with it. We did 15 months and even though we never "graduated" he is a
different child. Truly: grade-wise and attitude and ability...
It's all worth it.

You know I am really glad you posted now too.  It's made me notice some very good things about my son lately.

Because we are right there with you; it is getting SO difficult to stick with it - for me and my son.  There have been a couple days lately where I've remembered we needed to do exercises, but just couldn't make myself get started.

We've been on Dore for a year (and 2 weeks).  We were very consistent in the beginning and my son got his mental exercises in May - right before the doors closed.  So while we've been doing the exercises, we haven't had a single assessment while on mentals; I have no idea where he started, so even when he does get assessed, we won't know how much (or litlle) progress he's made.  We're in California so there are no centers nearby and a trip to the East Coast just isn't in the budget right now.

But, you know what, just tonight I had stop and realize that all of a sudden, my son - 14yrs, 8th grader - has taken total ownership of his school work.  He handles all of his homework on his own and just did a big history project where he scored 164/140 (24 points in extra credit - that I didn't even know he did!)  At this moment, he has As in everything but Algebra where he has a C (maybe when that grade goes up I'll know we're done, LOL!)

Tomorrow when he moans and complains about his exercises, I'm going to have to remind him of what is accomplishing. ... in addition to his grades, he also made the all-league, all-star team in water polo and got the school's "champion" award for being a good student and good citizen as well as good athlete (that was a really big deal).

Wow... seeing that written in one place; how could I NOT have realized the difference Dore is making!?!  I do believe I'm rejuvenated for tomorrow!!

Thanks Kim for posting!!
