"Health care in this country is in for some tough times if we don't do something
now about the medical liability crisis many states are facing.
Lawyers eager to make a quick buck, and a few dishonest people willing to file
frivolous lawsuits, are ruining things for the rest of us. That' s why patients
like me are coming forward to urge Congress to do something about this
situation.
Fortunately, there are answers out there.
California, for example, has medical liability limitations in place that limit
non-economic damage awards to $250,000 (economic damages, such as medical costs,
are still unlimited). This policy removes the impetus for people to sue a doctor
just to get rich.
As a result, liability insurance for many physicians in the state is one-fourth
the cost it is in states that haven't passed reforms and those savings are
passed along to patients.
We need national legislation that follows California's model. Please help by
working with your colleagues to pass a medical liability reform bill like this
as soon as possible.
