After 50+/- years of horrible, fragile teeth, my dentist has agreed
to take most of them out. He recommended implants for the bottom -
they sink a couple of posts and the entire lower denture is hooked
on these things. You get them taken out every six months for
cleaning etc. The top plate - he wants to leave a few teeth in,
crown and root canal them - and put in a flapper. What do you guys
think? This whole procedure is going to cost a serious chunk of
change AFTER insurance.
Once you extract a tooth, bone loss occurs rapidly. If you place what they
call an immediate loaded implant into the jaw bone, your system continues to
treat the surrounding area as if there is still a tooth there, so there is no
further bone loss. For someone like me whom already had some issues of bone
loss, this was the best way to proceed. Once the oral surgeon extracted my
teeth, he had a clear picture into the jaw bone and chose the best places
that had the most significant amount of bone, to insert the implants. This is
far less traumatic than having my teeth extracted at one visit and then going
in for yet another surgery in 6 or so months. The implants should take to
the bone within 3 or so months. Then I will be able to snap my denture into a
secure foundation. Rita

Hey Rita .... you are talking about bone-loss? .... is this the jaw
bone? ...... how is there a "loss" if the tooth is not there? ... I
have heard that this is just a BS line with lots of dentists. And
there has been lots of BS done to people ...look here in this group !
And what is the deal with your O S ? .... was there a flat hourly
charge or is it based on how many teeth?
I am still in-the-process of putting my deal together. I have been
given the idea of shopping-around for the best deal and the quality
of the product.
Which type of implants did you go with? .... did you get a "deal" on
a couple of those - if they do the operation at one time?

Eric I can tell you bone loss is not BS. I had 7 teeth removed many years
ago. Before implants were becoming more popular and common. The back of my
lower jaw where they were removed is almost degraded away. I can open my
mouth and tell the loss, I can feel the loss from the outside just touching
with
my fingers. You can see in on x-rays.
The way it was explained to me is that when the teeth are seated in the
lower jaw they act sort of like pistons or shock absorbers. When you chew and
talk the pressure exerted by the teeth in the jaw promote blood flow to the
bone which promotes continued growth of health bone. When you remove the teeth
there is nothing to provide that pumping motion in the jaw so the blood flow
diminishes and new bone growth is not generate. What is there degrades.
I've been told I have pretty much a 50/50 chance of implants working in the
back portion of my lower jaw. I'm going to try for that good 50% and try to
save what part of my jaw I can.
If you look at older people who have had dentures for years and years look
when you can at where their lower jaw has moved to in relation to their upper.
The face really shrinks and changes due to the bone loss.

We are talking bone loss and my specific situation is my upper jaw. After
the natural teeth are extracted and the immediate denture is inserted, there
is a relatively fast loss of the bone that used to hold the natural teeth in
place. By the end of three weeks, enough bone has been lost that there is a
LOT of space between parts of the denture and the healing gums. This leads
to rapidly increasing looseness and sore spots. If you have an implant
inserted, the bone loss is minimal. That is not BS but a fact. My OS charges
per
implant...however in my case he capped the mini at $1,000.00. He said he
would insert as many mini as possible and not charge me over $1,000.00...with
the hope that most or some of them would integrate with the bone. Because I do
have bone loss from periodontal disease he said that I needed to have a few
normal size implants as well. I believe I have 3 reg implants and the rest
are mini. All along the top front of my gums.
Without getting implants, after teeth are extracted you do have rapid bone
loss and you your facial structure begins to sink in...this is not so with
implants. Yes, they are expensive, but I believe very worth it in the long
run.
My OR is allowing me to make monthly payments...without that option I could
not have this done at all. My total bill for the OR only is approx
$13,000.00.

Tracey - great explanation - We were concerned about my implants integrating
as well because of my bone loss....but I can tell you that my OR is
extremely pleased so far. It's not just about the esctetics either....With
minimal
bone loss and secure fitting dentures, you are able to chew and digest your
food a lot better...which promotes better health all around.

The company Affordable Dentures is just that. They offer a mini implant that is
really reasonabley priced and often you can use your current dentures and they
trim them down to work with the implants. They have offices in many locations
throughout the country. I am not sure how anyone can afford the high prices I
have seen here, even with insurance. It is amazing and almost sad that they
charge sooooooooooooooo much when so many more people would take advantage of
the services if they were affordable.
I wear dentures and while it is a pain to have to use adhesive from time to
time, I refuse to pay the high prices some are charging. I am saving up for the
cost of mini implants with Affordable Dentures.
Hope this has many helped someone out there,
Thanks for this! Does anyone else have good (or--I guess--bad, too) things
to say about this group? I'm going to change dentists and would love advice!
Thanks--
Karen

Hi
I am allways carefull to recomannd mini implants. If there is enough bone it is
best to choose larges size of implants. If the is a large surface then bone can
grow on mucht better and the last longer.
