Thanks for your sharing your experiences, Sally and Elizabeth. My name is
Christine. I first had my dentures put in Oct 1st, 2005. Shortly thereafter, I
found this group on Yahoo Groups and have been keeping up with the various
information from others in the group attempting to learn from their experiences.
This is an entirely new phase of my life and I really had no preparation for
what the after results would be.
I did the procedure in a way most people wouldn't, having 25 teeth extracted
at once. I couldn't bear the thought of prolonging the inevitable and being in
the dentist chair the rest of my life. After menopause, my teeth had shifted and
my gums were in terrible condition rendering my teeth not worth saving.
The extractions were no problem, no pain, or additional adjuncts to such a
radical procedure. However, it was a terrible shock to see myself in the mirror
(after thinking I had let go of things like vanity and self-consciousness long
ago - I'm 61) and I did go through physical trauma from such a radical procedure
for about two weeks. However, I still do not regret doing it all at once rather
than extending it on for years ahead.
Truthfully, in spite of how much I liked the new way my mouth looked with my
new "teeth", I did have a very difficult time adjusting to this new accessory
inserted into my mouth. Oh, I had plenty of advice from others who had dentures
and their own personal experiences and I gave it all a try but what seemed to
work for them, didn't for me. It seems as if everyone has a different reaction
physically, psychologically, and emotionally to this procedure. And, I had no
one I felt truly reliable to ask questions to about as to what was 'normal" or
not.
So now I am one of those people who are sharing their own experiences and,
hopefully, bring some information as to how we react differently.
As the swelling went down with my gums and mouth, the dentures were loose
fitting and I soon had raw sores or blisters which were painfully unbearable. So
after a week, I took them out and let the sores heal.
I had my procedure done in Mexico from a highly recommended clinic that has
been in existence since 1987. I have nothing but praise for their capabilities,
help, concern and support. They did a beautiful job recreating my own teeth and
get compliments about how "normal" they look.
When I began having the unbearable pain, the Clinic told me to come back for a
semi-permanent adjustment, at their expense, and now I can wear my dentures
daily until I go back for the permanent adjustment in April.
At first I listened to everyone and tried what they suggested but I soon found
that I had to find my own way to wear dentures. I use Fix-a-dent on the top and
the powder on the bottom denture.I experiment with using the gel on the bottoms
but the powder seems to work the best so far. However, I am still having
problems chewing anything but soft foods and often have to put the powder back
on the lowers after eating anything especially if it is hot. They come loose and
that could be very embarrassing if I am out publicly.
I'm very frustrated at this point with this situation (how I long for a taco,
a sandwich or crispy foods like Cheetos!!)
Has anyone else had this problem? Or is it something I will just have to learn
to live with and adjust to?
I would appreciate any advice and/or expediences. Elizabeth, I've not tried to
use Scope yet but I'm willing to give it a try!
I'd sure like to know how long it takes to chew normally again without worry
of leaving the lower denture in a sandwich!
Looking forward to hearing from others of how how they have learned to cope
with this challenge.
Thank You, Christine
