I totally understand the apprehension. Think of it this way...you have to
face it at some point, why wait longer and always be thinking about it anyway!
It took me a few years to face the fact that I would have to get my upper
teeth pulled. It was difficult, and I felt way too young to have to go through
it. I did exactly what you are doing...I went on-line, listened to others
experiences and advise. It was helpful. What I learned is that everyone's
experience is different. I had no pain at all after the extractions, and I was
fit with implants immediately after the extractions. It has been a struggle
because the denture dentist, not my oral surgeon, was a complete idiot. My
upper temp is crooked and my speech has been greatly affected, but he
insisted it was in my mind and that I was too demanding. After almost one year
(since April of 2008), of weekly adjustments that did nothing, I asked my oral
surgeon to refer me to someone else. My new dentist is GREAT and very
respectful. He took one look at me and asked me to smile, his comment, "yes, the
denture mid-line is off and it is not sitting properly in your mouth, it's
twisted." When he removed the denture and took a good look, he told me the
denture was actually cracked right down the mid-line and showed me where. We
are now moving along at a good clip and I'm hoping to have my new
implant-supported denture in place within the next 5-6 weeks. In April it will
be 1 year
since the extractions. Hopefully I will have my permanent implant supported
denture in about 1 month.
My most important suggestion is too make certain you have a dentist,
preferably a denturist, whom you completely trust will do the right thing.
Unfortunately for me, I learned the long hard way that my previous dentist just
wasn't up to the task and didn't have the knowledge to help me. Instead of
owning
up to it, he made me feel like I was the issue.
Good luck to all, Rita
Thanks Frank, you too. We'll have to compare experiences. T
