Hello:
The link between denture cream use and neuropathy is one that is becoming
clearer as
new research emerges. Denture cream contains high amounts of zinc, which over
time is
ingested via the gums and the stomach (swallowing it). This zinc exposure causes
the
amount of copper in the body to decrease, which can cause neuropathy.
Neuropathy, as
you may know, is a condition involving damage to nerves. Symptoms include
tingling,
numbness, or pain, usually beginning in one's extremeties (arms and legs). It
eventually
can progress to become debilitating. Symptoms also sometimes include confusion
or
disorientation (cognitive decline or dementia).
As you may know, a large percentage of neuropathy cases are diagnosed as
"idiopathic,"
meaning the cause is unknown. The imbalance that zinc ingestion creates is a
causal
factor in neuropathy. Again, this research is very new, and additional
developments are
expected in the coming weeks and months.
If you are a denture user who has neuropathy issues, you should discuss it with
your
doctor immediately!
I have created a Yahoo group to discuss these issues. All are welcome! The group
