Dear Parent,

We invite you to participate in an online survey about the positive
side of parenting a child
with a disability. The study is being conducted by Teresa Ulman,
M.S., as a dissertation
project under the direction of Dr. Elisabeth Dykens, Ph.D. through
the Vanderbilt Kennedy
Center. Eligibility requirements are as follows:

· The parent must be 18 years or older
· The parent must have a child between the ages of 8 and 25 with a
diagnosis of one
(and only one) of the following: Angelman syndrome, autism, Down
syndrome, Prader-
Willi syndrome, or Williams syndrome.

We know parenting a child with a disability can be challenging at
times. But many people
find that the experience has led to personal growth in unexpected
ways. Surprisingly
there are almost no studies that look at the ways the experience can
strengthen people,
while there is plenty of research that looks at negative outcomes for
parents. This study
will provide for a more balanced understanding of how having a child
with a disability can
change a person's life.

Benefits of the study include an opportunity to reflect upon the
positive psychological
growth that you may have experienced following the birth of your
child with a disability.

The survey will take approximately 45-60 minutes to complete and
consists of a series of
questionnaires about you and your child. At the end of the study you
will have the
opportunity to write your thoughts in an unstructured format. For
further information, you
may contact Teresa Ulman by email at Teresa.ulman@ vanderbilt. edu or
by phone at
615.414.9665 or 1.888.322.5339.

**IF THE LINK DOES NOT WORK YOU CAN CUT AND PASTE THE WEB ADDRESS

Elizabeth,

Just a note that once you choose special ed you have a one in a million
chance to go to the regular classroom. Most people will tell you that.
Your child's only chance in an inclusive classroom is to start in
kindergarten. A lot of families repeat either kindergarten or 1st
grade.

I would recommend at least trying the regular classroom.

Hello all-

My 10 year old son w/ Ds is doing some personal "touching" if youknow what I
mean. My concern is he doesn't seem to hide to do it and will do infront of
others. He hasn't taken it to "completion" that I know if(again if you know what
I mean). I had an email from his Special Needs teacherthat she is concerned
about the bathrooms at school.

I am only letting him wear jeans at school - seems to make the touchy
feelyharder to do than with sweats or athletic pants. We are using verbal
prompts of"no touching."

Any advice or other ideas? Things that worked for others?

Sydney’s IEP is in a few weeks this is her first full year of preschool.  I have a thought, if she isn’t reaching most of her goals shouldn’t the school supply her with a summer program.  Last year I sent her to summer preschool myself and paid out of pocket, when I brought this up, the school said she would have to show regression…BUT I don’t want to give her an opportunity to show regression, that is the point.  Does anyone out there get there child “covered” for summer preschool or school?

Why not contact her and see what she knows so we don't duplicate efforts? I would love to see a sibling group start - our kids have moved into that need area.

Have any of you seen or used this product, thinking of purchasing for my daughter, Sydney who is three.  There is a workshop in Cleveland, OH in March but that is 4hours away.

Thanks for any info you may have.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts on bigger carseats.  I did my research and since I loved the Britax Roundabout, Im going to go with the Britax Marathon, it goes to 65lbs.  Now just have to pick the pattern, think Im going with DaisyJ

Thanks again, and wishing everyone a blessed holiday!

I can't remember the brand that Griffin had but he was in a seat that was a
booster with a 5 point harness - think it was a Graco. It then converted to use
with a regular shoulder seat belt. He is now in the seat kind (just the bottom
with the armrests) and a seatbelt.

Sydney is reaching the 40lb mark and weare looking for a new carseat.  The
carseat we have now we bought atrecommendations of others, it is a Britax
Roundabout and did cost more, but hasturned out to be a wonderful easy to clean
carseat.  At 40 they can use abooster and seatbelt, but I still feel she should
have the 5pt harness, justseems like with their lower tone.  She is 3.5yrs old,
any suggestions?
Thanks,
Denise

very interesting -- I had always heard the statistics of that most males w/ Ds
are infertile and the ones that are would always result in a child with Ds -
very interesting indeed!

FYI:

To date, there had been only two documented cases of men with DS
fathering pregnancies. There is now a third. A paper was just
published from India about a 26 year old man with nonmosaic DS
married to a 22 year old female with normal chromosomes. They had a
normal baby boy.
