Early-onset AD is also associated with Down syndrome , in that people with trisomy 21 (three forms of human chromosome 21 instead of a pair) often develop this form of Alzheimer’s. The brains of people with Down syndrome age prematurely, ...
Elizabeth,
Just a note that once you choose special ed you have a one in a million
chance to go to the regular classroom. Most people will tell you that.
Your child's only chance in an inclusive classroom is to start in
kindergarten. A lot of families repeat either kindergarten or 1st
grade.
I would recommend at least trying the regular classroom.

Julie, DSANI just received a complimentary copy of Terri
Couwenhoven'</wbr><wbr>s new book, Teaching Children with Down Syndrome about
their Bodies, Boundaries, and Sexuality: A Guide for Parents and

be worth a try. It's on the desk in the DSANI office. I
don't think Marsha has even had time to process it with the library. Hope
that helps. Jenny

I don’t think the behavior is related toDs, but may be a heredity issue or
related to alcohol consumption. I havewitnessed similar behavior with G’s
mother in St Louis,DC, Indianapolis, etc., late in the evening. I also noticed
the behavior just corrected itselfthe following morning.

Hello all-
My 10 year old son w/ Ds is doing some personal "touching" if youknow what I
mean. My concern is he doesn't seem to hide to do it and will do infront of
others. He hasn't taken it to "completion" that I know if(again if you know what
I mean). I had an email from his Special Needs teacherthat she is concerned
about the bathrooms at school.
I am only letting him wear jeans at school - seems to make the touchy
feelyharder to do than with sweats or athletic pants. We are using verbal
prompts of"no touching."
Any advice or other ideas? Things that worked for others?

About Special Kids (formerly IPIN) has announced the following trainings:
Article 7/Special Education Law - $35
Monday May 14th - 9:30am to 12:30pm at the ASK Central Office
Overview: This 3 hour training offers basic information about special education laws and regulations for Indiana children ages 3-21. It also introduces recent changes in federal law that will impact Indiana's state regulations. This training is a great opportunity for family members and professionals who advocate for children with a disability or serious chronic illness and is offered on a regular basis.
Preparing Your Child's IEP (Individual Education Program) - $35
Tuesday May 22nd - 6pm to 9pm at the ASK Central Office
Overview: This 3 hour training provides information on how to prepare for a case conference and write an IEP (Individualized Education Program). It is an excellent follow-up to the Article 7 training. Participants must complete the Article 7 training before attending the IEP training.
Sydney’s IEP is in a few weeks this
is her first full year of preschool. I have a thought, if she isn’t reaching
most of her goals shouldn’t the school supply her with a summer program.
Last year I sent her to summer preschool myself and paid out of pocket, when I
brought this up, the school said she would have to show regression…BUT I don’t
want to give her an opportunity to show regression, that is the point. Does
anyone out there get there child “covered” for summer preschool or
school?
I have a family here in Whitley County (CC area) that is
looking for a second opinion regarding braces for their son who is in the 5th
grade. Does anyone have a recommendation other than Dr Whatley?
I would love for them to come “this”
way, I can call and see what it takes for them to come to a certain area. The
video of her daughter reading is awesome…Anything I can do to help…Im
here. Sydney went to Turnstone over last summer and will probably do the same
for this summer

Laurie -- This is on the DSANI group or if you meant
something to the membership list Marilyn can send out (and she gets this loop).
And Marsha Scheitlin had expressed interest in organizing some sib groups and
spoke to someone with the autism group I believe. Why not contact her and see
what she knows so we don't duplicate efforts? I would love to see a sibling
group start - our kids have moved into that need area.

I have never heard of it either.
On another note, Autumn has been reading, again, and came across something on
sib shops.
I talked to Turnstone and they would be willing to get one together if we can
generate some interest.
Julie can you post to Dsani and see if anyone else is interested?
Thanks,

Just wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts on bigger
carseats. I did my research and since I loved the Britax Roundabout, Im going
to go with the Britax Marathon, it goes to 65lbs. Now just have to pick the
pattern, think Im going with DaisyJ
Thanks again, and wishing everyone a blessed holiday!
I can't remember the brand that Griffin had but he was in a seat that was a
booster with a 5 point harness - think it was a Graco. It then converted to use
with a regular shoulder seat belt. He is now in the seat kind (just the bottom
with the armrests) and a seatbelt.

Sydney is reaching the 40lb mark and weare looking for a new carseat. The
carseat we have now we bought atrecommendations of others, it is a Britax
Roundabout and did cost more, but hasturned out to be a wonderful easy to clean
carseat. At 40 they can use abooster and seatbelt, but I still feel she should
have the 5pt harness, justseems like with their lower tone. She is 3.5yrs old,
any suggestions?

very interesting -- I had always heard the statistics of that most males w/ Ds
are infertile and the ones that are would always result in a child with Ds -
very interesting indeed!

FYI:
To date, there had been only two documented cases of men with DS
fathering pregnancies. There is now a third. A paper was just
published from India about a 26 year old man with nonmosaic DS
married to a 22 year old female with normal chromosomes. They had a
normal baby boy.
