In HIV/AIDS-stricken Thailand, an oral anti-HIV vaccine given away by the tens of thousands to Thais and other southeast Asians--with some 50,000 Thais on the pills alone--is securing impressive responses against HIV/AIDS at all stages of the syndrome and with few or no side  effects while the world's major drug companies and the Western media either pooh-pooh or ignore it. Given away for free by Bangkok's Immunitor Corp. and the philanthropic Salang Bunnag Foundation as well as a charitable council under the patronage of the Thai royal family, the mass use of an oral  vaccine against a life-threatening condition constitutes the largest open-label trial of a medicine in history. Medical journalist Mike Culbert,  author or co-author of 22 books on medicine and medical politics and economics, including two on AIDS, recently visited the Thai clinic where the vaccine is being given to from ten to a hundred patients, often in the last throes of the disease, daily. He reports on dozens of cases of dying Thais, some sent to crowded Buddhist hospices to live out their last days, seeming to go into full recovery.
