The Community Partnership for People with Autism has been established to help to facilitate the participation of individuals with autism and their families within community settings.
The plans include:
· autism safety and emergency preparedness programs
· educational alliances
· medical campaigns to promote awareness and action
· local resource guide
· inclusion within religious practice and congregational life
· experiential learning and social skills development
· family support networks
· scholarships and grants
· promoting appropriate community employment opportunities
· finding means for quality care
· raising community awareness
· autistic resident inclusion in town recreation programs and events
· supporting autistic talents/handiworks
These projects are directed toward the autism population in Scotch Plains and Fanwood and neighboring towns in New Jersey. Hopefully, this type of initiative can be duplicated or expanded to support the inclusion of all special needs residents in these and other towns.
Families with members having autism often don't function or interact in conventional ways. Functionality is achieved through acceptance and accommodation. With acceptance families are able to achieve understanding and purpose. Individuals and their families can then overcome traditional isolation and be acknowledged as "participants" in community life.
It is our goal that CPPA will help guide and support the educational, emotional, spiritual and social welfare of individuals with autism and their families in all aspects of our community. If you have a family member or friend with autism, or if you have interest in supporting these initiatives, we welcome your participation.
