LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR JENNINGS VISITS DEERLAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Lt. Governor Toni Jennings visited Tallahassee's Deerlake Middle School on
Tuesday to congratulate the school for rising student achievement and
educational performance. The Lt. Governor joined school Principal Jackie
Pons for a 2005 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools award ceremony.
Deerlake is one of just 12 middle schools nationwide to receive recognition
and the only public middle school in Florida to be honored as a 2005 Blue
Ribbon School.

LAKE OKEECHOBEE RESTORATION PLAN

On Monday, Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson, Senator Ken Pruitt and
Representative Joe Negron joined me on the shores of Lake Okeechobee to
unveil a comprehensive plan to accelerate restoration and recovery of the
largest freshwater lake in the southeast. Under the $200 million recovery
plan, Florida is expanding water storage areas, constructing treatment
marshes and expediting environmental management initiatives to enhance the
ecological health of the lake and downstream coastal estuaries. Lake
Okeechobee is the gateway to America's Everglades. Restoring this dynamic
system is critical to the long-term economic and environmental health of
South Florida. This comprehensive, common-sense plan will reduce pollution
and better manage the flow of water while meeting our flood control and
water supply responsibilities.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED

First Lady Columba Bush joined me on Wednesday to announce the winners of
the 2005 Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest during the third annual
Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Bongos Cuban Café in Miami. The
three winners will receive a four-year college tuition scholarship courtesy
of the Florida Prepaid College Foundation and a personal computer courtesy
of Hayes Computers. I am proud to recognize our winners and the students
across Florida who participated in this year's essay contest. By taking the
time to reflect on the importance of the Hispanic influence in Florida,
these students have learned valuable lessons about Florida's diverse
heritage.

NEW BUSINESS COMING TO FLORIDA

This week I was proud to announce that Annandale Millwork/Allied Systems
Corporation, a residential building products manufacturer, will locate its
new southeast regional manufacturing operation in Nassau County. The
company's expansion in Yulee creates 52 high-value jobs and capital
investments of $2.8 million in facility construction, manufacturing and
business equipment. With its decision to locate the regional center in
Yulee, the Annandale Millwork/Allied Systems Corporation joins the 16,500
manufacturers that call Florida home. Florida's vibrant manufacturing
community is providing our citizens with an array of job opportunities
within a broad range of industries. The skilled labor force and low
business costs in Nassau County will contribute to the company's successful
expansion in Florida.

SCREENING FOR ANDY GARCIA'S NEW MOVIE

This Saturday, First Lady Columba Bush and I will join actor/director Andy
Garcia for a special screening of Garcia's new movie "The Lost City" at the
Cosford Cinema on the campus of the University of Miami. The movie screening
is the final event culminating a month-long celebration of Florida's
Hispanic heritage.

I applaud Andy Garcia's creativity in highlighting the story of so many who
left the land of their birth to build a better life for themselves and their
families in the United States. As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close,
Columba and I encourage all Floridians to continue to learn about the many
contributions of our diverse Hispanic communities.
