re: http://www.dpi.org/en/resources/pdfs/03-04-08-definition_dis.pdf Disabled Peoples' International, Definition of Disability.
Excerpt (see original in context at the above WebSite):
"The International Classification of Functioning (ICF) defines disability as the outcome of the interaction between a person with an impairment and the environmental and attitudinal barriers he/she may face."

LDMF Comment (return comments welcome) :
This is a very helpful integrating description, one to ponder and savor, with a few preliminary thoughts posted here, upon the very welcome receipt of this link.
1. By contrast, the sometimes-encountered basing of definitions of Disability solely on either impairment or perception models can tend to introduce unpromisng and paradoxical exclusionary principles. For example, if a "strictly medical model" is shunned, many people suffering physical or mental or other types of what they themlseves consider restricting conditions can get excluded from consideration as to rights and also duties. If a "strictly social model" (just for example) is rejected, then the cultrual relativity aspects of life are naively ignored.
2. On reading the DPI definition, I am appreciatively struck by what I will call a thematic reference to Disconnects. Disconnects can be experienced with no one else observing, hence a person in deep pain or unable to be in motion or optherwise partcularly in distress at a given time, for instance, may have inherent problems. Or Disconnects can be attitudinally imposed, wheras the targeted person does not share or wish to project a sense of medical impairment.
3. A view: when we see society as a mutli-directional network, which in my 'take' the DPI definition as I begin to study it seems to afford inclusively and not excludingly, living at a particular time and place can be seen as residency in a global system of systems; indeed a network of networks. There are various reasons cut-offs can occur (in graph theory, creating a 'cut set', a disconnect, rather than free flow].
4. On this model, DPI clearly focuses, assists, facilitiates the connection process and repair of disconnects. Communication and Compassion are glowing here. Bravo and Brava, and thank you for this e-mail connection as well.
