Hi Everybody,

Here are a couple answers to questions on the testing program offered by

Cleveland, OH - The Environmental Quality Institute of the University of North
Carolina at Asheville (EQI), Thermo Scientific NITON Analyzers, and the Ohio
Network for the Chemically Injured (ONFCI), have joined forces to create an
educational program in which the public will have an opportunity to
participate and take advantage of low cost testing beginning in February,
2007.

Innovative x-ray testing technology is available that can accurately detect
the levels of up to 26 elements in your environment in a matter of seconds.

1) What can be tested?

"While there are some issues with calibration, we can test virtually anything
people want. Our lower limit of detection is usually in the 10 parts per
million range, so water for example, isn't likely to work. (the Federal
standards for water are in parts per billion.)

For things like vacuum bags, people should just send a sample of the heavy
dirt from the bottom of the bag, not the cat hair, fiber, etc from the top.
Better density equals higher results."

2) Can other chemicals be tested for?

The xrf tests for elements, not compounds. No xrf can tell the difference
between penta (5 bromine atoms per molecule) and octa (8 bromines per
molecule). They just can't tell the difference between PBDE and other
brominated fire retardants.
