Re: [Cervical_Spondylosis] (unknown)

Lauri,
It is none of my business but I would suggest taking the Norco as you need it. I have avoided narcotics like the plague but my body has paid the price. I still want to hike and bike and all of those things but I have to take it easy. I have a lot of pain when I walk in all of my joints, especially my knees, ankles and hips. I have another problem they haven't figured out yet, they think it may be Still's Disease. I am going to John's Hopkins soon for an inpatient work-up. I had swollenm with a lot of fluid starting last september and gained up to 277. I am normally 225 and an avid powerlifter. I had just climbed Sugarloaf Mountain in Western Maryland in late July. Since then I have to stagger my rest and activities. I have lost a lot of the fluid down to 235. I am in a Medical Holding company now which I guess would be like medical leave in the civilian world.
I wish you all the best and make sure to take the motrin with food or milk it will protect you stomach. Take care and I hope to hear from you soon. Keep your chin up. I am no preacher but I have seen a lot of awful things in the rest of the world and as far as I am concerned each day above ground is a good day.

Sincerely,

Brian

Lauri,
I am sorry to hear about your situation. I too have cervical spondylosis and cervical stenosis. I am in the Army and have been for almost 21 years. I have always been active; hiking, biking, weightlifting and the like. I have had quite a few injuries over the years to include a CH-47 chonook helicopter trying to land on my head in Haiti in '95. I have dealt with pain the way most GI's do, Motrin. We call it GI candy. I woiuld take 3200mg a day but of course that lead to stomach problems as well. I also have two herniated disks C2-C3 and C5-C6. Currently I plan on not having surgery. I have been taking MS Contin (slow acting morphine) and percocet. If you haven't went to a pain management clinic you might want to get a referral. Cervical spondylosis is basicall arthritis of the neck. Cervical stenosis is a narrowing of the hole where the spinal cord goes through the spinal column. I just use google to find web sites. Your ace in the hole when dealing with doctors is JCAHO (Joint Commission for the Accredidation of Hospital Organizations). Most medicakl personnel are terrified of them so you might mention reporting to them if you have problems. The website is www.jointcommission.org. Best of luck.

Hi my name is Lauri Schmidt.  I am a 46 year old mother of two g-ma of  four.  I found out about a week ago that I have Cevical Spodylosis and  Cervical Stenosis.  When I was 10 years old I was diagnosed with Scolosis and had 3 curves in my spine.  I had  2 surgeries and thought it was all good.  I've lived with back pain for the last 19 years but this pain is all so different.  I see a nerosurgeon this Thursday ( 3-29-07)  I am opting at this time to not have surgery but to try to manage the pain.  My life has changed  somewhat in the past  5 weeks.  I never before would take anything  stronger than motrin. I am now living on Norco and  sometimes valium but the valium  does nothing for me. I would just like  to talk with people that know about this and could explain it better than my doctor did. She  gave me a diagnosis and some perscriptions and sent me out the door with a referal to the nerosurgeon. I have had to look everything up I have learned online.
Thank you for listening to me.

Hi Brian,

I used to be active and still try but have been limited in the last few weeks. I try not to take the Norco the doctor perscribed but sometimes just can't  use motrin alone. My nerosurgeon was very understanding that I wanted to hold off on surgery. Motrin also gives me stomach problems, but I take it sometimes instead of the pain pills.

I am going to a pain management clinic but they couldn't get me in for evaluation until May  15th. I also start phys therapy May 7th..so I am managing the pain on my own. I just have to be careful not to turn my neck to the left to much. And not over do at things I like to do.  Do you have pain when walking?  Seems my days of walking are limited to shorter less frequent times.
Wow, I am glad your ok the helicopter trying to land on your head seems a bit dangerous. Thats just awful. I had scoliosis as a child so already had a messed up back...it wasn't until 2001 that I had ruptured a disc in my lower back that I started having some pain again...then bam!!....in Feb. all I did was reach into my dryer to take clothes out. Crazy huh?

I am going to visit the site you gave me  and I thank you for the info. I appreciate your sharing it helps to talk to people that have had this and understand it better than I do.

Take Care
Lauri Jo
