Hello,
I am new to this group but not to neck and back pain. I have
degenerative changes at the C5-6 and C6-7 levels inclusive of
herniated disks and bone spurs. My diagnosis began with what I
thought was carpal tunnel and medial epicondylitis and some next
pain. The surgeon wanted to do next surgery and fusion immediately,
however, I thought I would give it some time and try some
alternative, conservative approaches. I stopped high-impact exercise
and heavy lifting, but continued to workout with bicycling,
elliptical machine and lifting weights. Also, I continued with PT,
stretching several times daily, home traction and acupuncture (though
I have not be as faithful with that…as after a year I went back for
bi-weekly sessions).
I went back for a repeat MRI after 2.5 years and will get the results
this week. My main complain is numbness and mild weakness of the
hands and arms. As an active 54 yo female, I will miss terribly my
exercise routine, traveling, gardening and enjoying my first
grandchild (now 5 months) if I elect fusion. I am told I will need
to have the surgery or can become paralyzed. After I work out at the
gym for 1-2 hours at a time, or ride a bike 35 miles, I hardly feel
that time is right around the corner, but I am concerned.
My questions are for those who have been through fusion:
-What is recovery period?
-How long does it take to resume your lifestyle?
-How much flexibility will you have after surgery?
I am also looking into clinical trials with disk replacement at multi-
levels. Thanks to any and all that read my tale and if you have any
insight, I am all ears!
Karen
