I was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in situ of the
cervix in November of 1996. I was 24 years old. I had
just given birth in August of that year and went to
the dr. for my post-partum check up. Although I wasn't
even due for another pap smear for a few more months,
since I was there for an exam, my dr. decided it
wouldn't hurt to go ahead and do the test. I am alive
today because of that test. After several biopsies, a
d&c, and a leep cone, I elected to have a hysterectomy
in February of 1997. I have been cancer free ever
since, Thank God! I had my first daughter when I was
only 17, which is so young. Now I know why that was
meant to be. Thank God I have two beautiful girls. I
know a lot of people in my situation aren't so lucky
to have had children and my heart goes out to them.
There still isn't a day that goes by that I don't
wonder if the cancer has come back. I keep hearing how
rare adenocarcinoma is and I'm wondering if they
happened to find it in my cervix, why couldn't it be
somewhere else? I would love to hear from other
survivors of this disease. My doctors seem to have no
answers for me as to the cause of this and because I
have daughters, I'm very concerned for them, although
I've also been told there is no genetic link. Thanks
for reading,
Paula, Elkins, WV
