Re: [Cervical-Cancer] Re: new, need help

Laurie,

When the Doctors said they are leaving the decision up to her, Did they mention internal AND external radiation?  I had both (2 internal radiation implants).  Side effects?  Well, this is just from my experience.  When they do the radiation (external) sometimes the radiation hits the rectum and can cause some diarrhea, constipation.  After the treatments were finished I also had some burnt looking areas.  That all clears up after a while, and when/if she gets the radiation she can use unscented lotion before the treatments and afterwards.  Some people have said that the radiation also makes them feel tired after a couple treatments.  I went every day for 6 weeks and it never made me feel that way (the chemo sure did though).  Is her dr an oncologist?  I was sent to a local cancer center for my treatments and received thee best care there!  It's also important that she has a dr she can talk to.  Best of luck and I will be thinking about you and your mom.

Hugs
Judy

Judy,
Yes, the doctors are leaving the decision of whether to go with a
hysterectomy or with radiation up to her, although they have said
that it might be possible she could have the surgery and still have
to have radiation.
She just had her ct scan this week, so I don't think they've
officially staged the cancer yet, but they've said it was probably
caught early. She had health problems to begin with, so it's a
matter of trying to decide which route would be the most strenuous
on her body. What type of side effects can we expect?
Thank you for your help,
Laurie

I personally think the hyst would be the best thing to do. Although any surgery is risky, if it is done vaginally (mine was), it really isn't bad. I had a 6...
