Hello All,

I've been lurking here for a while and have noticed a drop off in
posts over the past few months. I hope that means everyone is busy
in their practices and/or getting in their summer vacations. I'd
like to introduce myself. I'm a massage therapist and certified
personal trainer living and practicing in Chapel Hill, NC. I've had
a successful practice for almost 7 years now. Prior to this, I had
a background in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, business
development and marketing. I have started and sold 7 businesses
over the past 18 years.

I'm a former competitive gymnast and swimmer so I understand the
mental and physical aspects of being an athlete. In 2003 I was
awarded the only research grant given to a massage therapy
instructor by the American Massage Therapy Association Foundation.
In 2004, I served on the Athens Health Services Sports Massage Team,
as one of a group of 70 practitioners who went to Athens Greece to
work with the athletes of the 2004 Olympics and Paralympics.

I have recently been approached by several businesses to help them
market and increase their revenues with the current clients they
have without endangering their bottom line. My clients include Full
Spectrum Healing, M. Hall, DC, Triangle Personal Training, and Great
Earth Vitamins, among others.

I would like to offer these services to any of you who is looking
for a way to increase your profits without having to work longer or
harder. If this sounds of interest to you, please contact me for a
free phone consultation and training session to assess your needs
and whether the programs I offer would be right for you.

Thanks alot and happy training!

I'd love to hear opinions from those of you who have the ACE cert. When
I was looking into it there were several things I heard that made me
choose ACSM. First I searched a bunch of job listings, ACSM and NASM
were the top two required. Couple friends in the business recommended
ACSM. And The general impression I got was that ACSM and NASM were the
two that dealt more with the science behind why and how you train people
rather then just a boiler plate "do this".

My 2 cents.

I'm looking into getting a personal trainer certification and I would

ACSM or NSCA)?

Thank you for your opinion and advices

Tracy;

I, too, am a relatively new comer to this industry after years in high-tech.  One of the things I have done which has proved very helpful is to align myself with a number of one-on-one studios in my state.  Each of these studios I have arrangements with keep me in their data base and when they get a request for a trainer from their web site that they can't take [usually because of distance,] they pass the prospect along to me for a referral fee.  Other things I have done are:
  1. Determine what age and income demographic you want to target, and find out what those people do, where they recreate, and otherwise spend their money.  Without doing this first, you're going to spend a lot of energy, time, and money trying to cover all bases.
  2. Get a web site [visit mine below by clicking on the name], and get yourself into search engines,
  3. Become the 'trusted expert', by speaking on health and fitness at various organizations.  For example I regularly speak at a support group for those people who have had Bariatric surgery.  I have also spoken at Rotary Club meetings.  If you're not comfortable speaking in front of people, join the local chapter of Toastmasters International;  in it you'll not only get an audience for selling your product, but you'll also get practice speaking in front of people.  I have also appeared on a local cable show called the Wellness Wheel, and am talking with the public access folks at my local cable company to get my own 30 minute slot.  I also write a fitness article for a quarterly magazine called Lifespan which is geared to the 50 and older crowd, the crowd I've decided to target primarily because of their increased disposable income.
  4. Get and wear t-shirts, polo shirts, etc., that identify your business and identify you as a personal trainer.  I only decided to do that when I was approached a few times by people [in a Starbucks, no less] who asked me if i was a personal trainer.  Since then when wearing my polo or t-shirt, I've gotten a few more customers.  For a few hundred dollars, you can get t-shirts made up with your logo which you can then give to your clients.
  5. Join the local chamber of commerce, and go to their events,
  6. Join the local chapter of BNI [Business Networking International], you'll pick up a lot of clients 1st, 2nd, and 3rd hand from the associations you make with the group.
Hope this helps.  Good luck,
Nick

tracy,

i think one of the easiest way and may be the most time consuming, is
to promote yourself and your website on the internet. with enough self-
promotion and advertising, people will be curious to look at your
website. if they live near you, they may want to meet you and try your
service out. word of mouth helps a great deal too so if you have
already established some clients that you see on a regular basis, they
may tell others and refer them to you.

Hi I am working on my PT certification as well and there was a lot to
consider. I did the internet search and was majorly overwhelmed.
Price, time, testing ect. all play a big part in deciding who to go
with. I eventually want to work for myself but will want to work for a
club to have a steady income and get real world experience first. So I
e-mailed and called all the clubs in my area and asked what
certifications they recognize and accept as criteria for hiring. You
might want to do this in your area. I found out the community college
in my town has an exercise science degree program so I decided to take
that route. Every professor in that area of study recommends A.C.S.M.
first and foremost. Runners up are N.A.S.M. and A.C.E. (I.S.S.A.
doesn't ever get a mention) Hope this can help somewhat:)

Hi Sue.
Concentric is when you are contracting the target muscles during the exercise, pulling down the bar in the lat pull-down, pushing the weights away in the legpress.
Eccentric is when your target muscles are stretching, or relaxing during the exercise, straightening the arms during the lat pull-down, or when you bend your knees and let the weight plate slide back toward's you in the legpress. I hope this help's!

Hi All,

Thanks for all of your input. So, I just wanted to give an update. I did not bring it up, however she did. We didn’t talk about it as she indicated that it was in the past & it just wouldn’t have been appropriate at the time. So, I’ll keep an eye on it, and if it should resurface, I’ll ask for more advice at that point.

Thanks again.

Hi Jamie, you'll get many varying opinions on this matter. As an Sport
Professional with more than 25 years in the field- I think I've got
apretty good lay of the land. For someone such as myself, who was a
gymnast from the age of 5, who started lifting weights at the age of
12 for supplemental strenght training, and the daughter of a
bodybuilder, I was alreay extremely well- versed prior to aduting any
Certifiying bodies programs/ fee charges, and what was offered for
what reasons. For myself, I prefer The IFPA and AFAA. The IFPA is an
excellent choice for anyone with a strong and already thorough working
knowledge of weight training/ bodybuilding/ strong fitness background.
They are resonably priced, have excellent member services- and deal
with REAL LIFE TRAINING in the gym. Like any reputable assc., you must
sit for a proctored exam. Their manual is concise and excellent.
However, they may not be the optimal choice for yourself if you lack a
knwoledgeable fitness background/ are beginning totally from scratch.
That being said- they are very under- rated, and derserve a great deal
of respect. AFAA may be a good choice for you if you are an absolute
beginner. They are VERY fairly priced also, and have a good hands- on
segment for your edification. Their member/ customer service is also
excellent. NSCA is a good progaram- but very lenghty, to the point of
being tedious and superulolus/ VERY SCINETIFIC as opposed to
functional/ user friendly- IF you are already versed, and a Sport
Professional, but very thourough and concise. ACE is an Advestising
DYNAMO, and this is how they have gained much of their status as being
recognised, they were all- but- dead, at one point, until some
advertising genius reserected them from the dead, and promoted them to
the hilt, they are, therefore, very money orientated. This doesn't
invalidate them- it simply brands them as being more greedy- perhaps
more about $'s, than real world training, and being interested in
their trainers. NASM is another org that became about $'s and coperate
greed, although they did not begin in that fashion, this is most
unfourtanate. Other than ACSM, which is good, and valid- I would
recommend against most of the others. NESTA's program is, in fact,
very COMPREHENSIVE, and vigorous, in spite of the fact that there is
not a physical hands on segment. They are, however, not recognized by
many potential employers, which is unfortunate- they are highly under-
appreciated. This again, may be attributed to who is putting more $'s
into promoting/ making $'s, greed- than which programs are most
practical, and can be of real use in the real world. Check out AFAA
and IFPA, ( if you have a strong enough foundation), first. Other than
ACSM and NESTA- ( which is sadly unrecognized by many potential
employers), most of the rest are after $'s more than training good
trainers. Hope this helps you! Good luck! Be Well!

Hi Elizabeth. I am a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, Yoga
Instructor, and most relevant of all pertaining to your query- a
Professional Gymnastics Coach. I am a Certified and Professional
Member of USA Gymnastics, and The Canadian Gymnastics Federation.
Gymnastics Coaches have alot of face to face personal time with
their athletes- this give them the unique oppertunity to tune in to
any mental difficulties/ stressors, that may manifest physically.
Most commonly, young gymnasts may fall victim to " The Female
Triad," a prime components of which is anorexia. Other mental
stressors may result from child abuse, etc. You may not be a mental
health professional, but at some point, you do have a duty- if only
implied to act upon/ report determental health issues, and assist/
intervene accordingly. This is a dicey area. Since this young lady
is a new client, give it a bit of time. If you observe the behaviour
contiuning to a determental point, you may have an implied duty to
warn/ intervene. Do so delicately. Use your common sense, be
positive but realistic. I fit contiues, you may wish to broach the
subject w/ the clinet first. Ask her about any stressors in her
life, how things are going, how she's feeling. If down the line you
observe extremes- you may need to inform her parents, since she is a
minor child, be diplomatic. Good luck! Be Well!

Hi Elizabeth,

I"m certified massage therapist, yoga instructor and certified personal trainer.

I personally would not say anything to her after only one visit.  Perhaps in the course of time, after you get to know her better,  she might bring it up or you might inquire about the mark on her arm.

That  is how I would handle it.

I hope that helps.

Best Wishes in your new career!

Anyway, I have a question. I have a new client. She's 17 & during our first session, I noticed that she had scars along her inner forearm (I assume from "cutting" info here: http://www.coolnurse.com/self-injury.htm ) It's all healed now - they aren't fresh scars. Should I say anything to her? to her parents? What would you do? I'll see her again for our second session in a couple of days.

My experience with ACE has been amazing. I am both certified as a
personal trainer and Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant. They
are non-profit so their rates are much cheaper in contrast to what
ISSA charges (as a for-profit business). Another organization called
NSCA is also good but their test takes a long time to study for, is
offered infrequently, and is very expensive. In addition, ACE has
great customer service and very good monthly publications. If anyone
else has questions about ACE I would be happy to answer them but I am
busy training people and running some businesses so please be patient.

Sincerely,

Justin

Being that it's for yourself, that probably makes the
decision easier since you don't have to worry about
what gym will accept what cert. ACE is very intensive
and thorough if you have the time on your hands to
delve that far into it. If you'd like a cert that
will provide you with some knowledge, some new
exercises, and a practical approach, AFAA is great,
not too expensive and has a hands-on segment that I'm
really a fan of.

Personally, I think the online certs aren't as
valuable because there is no face-to-face interaction,
hands-on demonstration, etc. Just my opinion. If you
want to check out AFAA, go to AFAA.com

Hope this was helpful :)

Does anyone know anything about taking Pregnonelone daily?  A personal trainer suggested that I stop taking HRT and start taking this natural  hormone precursor.  She suggested that I  start with 30 mg of pregnonelone and increase that dose every two weeks.  I've read that it can cause cardiac fibrillations and that it hasn't been well studied yet?  Anyone have any advice or info?

Thanks for any input.

Lynn
