We have built our advisory board to represent the diversity and unity that NASM represents within the sports medicine, performance enhancement and fitness community. Board members were invited because of their unique and revolutionary contributions to the health and fitness industry and to their respective professions. We look forward to their contributions and to the growing organization as we expand around the globe.
Chaired by Dr. Kevin Steele, an industry leader for 15 years, NASM’s Scientific Advisory Board is comprised of the following distinguished members:
Dr. Kevin Steele, PhD., Chair. Dr. Steele serves as Vice President of Sports Marketing at 24 Hour Fitness. Dr. Steele helped create the 24 Hour Fitness University where he served as the school’s academic dean. In addition, Dr. Steele was responsible for the design, evaluation, administration and expansion of all 24 hour fitness exercise, physical therapy and personal training programs.
Dr. Richard Birrer, M.D. Dr. Birrer is a professor of medicine at Cornell University and is the President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, Inc. He is also a diplomat and fellow in the specialties of Family Practice, Sports Medicine, Geriatrics, Emergency Medicine and Medical management.
Dr. Thomas Carter, M.D. Dr. Carter is an expert in the field of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. Dr. Carter has been practicing since 1989 and is board certified. He is the head of Orthopedic Surgery for Arizona State University and head team physician for the Phoenix Suns.
Dr. George Davies, DPT, Med, PT, SCS, ATC, LAT, CSCS. Dr. Davies is a clinician, educator, speaker, researcher, and author in the areas of sports physical therapy, athletic training, orthopedics and rehabilitation for almost 40 years. Dr. Davies was the original co-founder and co-editor of the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy as well as the international journal Isokinetics and Exercise Science. Dr. Davies now serves as a professor of Physical Therapy at Armstrong Atlantic State University, graduate program in Physical Therapy.
Dr. Reed Humphrey, PhD. Dr. Humphrey is associate professor of Physical Therapy at Idaho State University with prior appointments at VCU and Virginia Tech. He is currently head of the World Council for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. He serves as the exercise science content expert for Reebok and ABC Medical News.
Dr. Stephen Kraus, PhD. Dr. Kraus is one of the world’s foremost success scientists. He is the founder and president of Next Level Sciences Inc. Dr. Kraus received his doctoral degree from Harvard University and taught psychology at the University of Florida.
Dr. Craig Liebenson, DC. Dr. Liebenson, received his bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado and chiropractic degree from the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. He is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Chiropractic, Division of Health Sciences at Murdoch University and a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain and the American Pain Society. Dr. Liebenson is the organizer of the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and Scandinavian College of Chiropractic Rehabilitation Diplomate Courses. He is also consultant and lead faculty for the Murdoch University and Anglo-European Chiropractic College M.Sc. programs in Chiropractic Rehabilitation.
Dr. David McFarland, PhD. Dr. McFarland has extensive research experience in Biomechanical and Neurophysiological analysis of human movement. He is currently Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal and Adjunct Professor at McGill University. He also serves as Vice president of Scientific Development of Biotonix, Inc.
Dr. Craig Phelps, D.O. Dr. Phelps currently serves as Provost at Arizona School of Health Sciences. In addition to his sports and family medicine practice at the Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopedics, Dr. Phelps is the medical director for the Student Health Center at Grand Canyon University and also serves as the Primary Care Team Physician for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, and Scottsdale Community College. He is also a consulting physician for the Phoenix Coyotes, Arena Football’s Arizona Rattlers and Ballet Arizona.
Gay Riley, MS, RD, CCN. A noted nutritionist for nearly 20 years, Riley serves as senior consulting dietitian for Apex Fitness Group, Inc. and is also on the advisory board for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
Dr. Jacques Souadjian, M.D. Dr. Souadjian is a clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine and is fellow of the American College of Physicians. He has practiced medicine for more than 35 years and is currently focused on the rehabilitation of healthy lifestyles.
Dr. Ina Stephens, M.D. Dr. Stephens is a board certified Pediatrician and Pediatric Infectious Diseases sub-specialist. Dr. Stephens is also the Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Program Director of the Pediatric Residency Training Program at Children’s Hospital-Sinai in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Alan Titchenal, PhD. Dr. Titichenal currently teaches and conducts research in the Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences at the University of Hawaii. His research focuses on nutrition and human performance. Dr. Titchenal holds a doctoral degree in Nutrition and is a Certified Nutrition Specialist.
With the bringing together of these qualified individuals, NASM continues to advance the health and fitness industry and continues to bring solution-based education, valid research and cutting-edge technology forward.
