Is Stretching Overrated? - Insight from SportSpecific.com Members! |
 |
This is taken directly from the SportSpecific.com Members-Only Forum. It's an interesting look at stretching!
bodybymike Is streching necessary before and after a weight training session or is it over rated.
Dan Over rated. Do I need to go into why??
fitman1 This is, by far, one of the biggest debates in all of weight training. Ask 20 trainers and you'll likely get 20 differing responses. My belief is that a muscle should never be stretched until is warmed. What good is stretching a cold rubber band? The likelyhood of a tear or rupture is too great. Young kids in class who are released for recess don't stretch, and yet they never seem to have problems with muscle tears. You never see a cheetah stretch prior to bolting after a gazelle, so why should we?
Over-rated? Compared to what? Stretching a muscle is good for it, but again,
what type of stretching? Dynamic, static, ballistic, PNF, micro-stretch techniques or other? I prefer to stretch a little as I go along and do a moderate stretch post training session. I do not compete in explosive type sports, but for the clients I train who do I have them use micro-stretch techniques. For more info read Nikos Apostolos's comments in "High Performance Sports Conditioning" from Human Kinetics Press.
Stretching is a hotly debated topic. Read lots, study more and use your own judgement backed by data and experience. I hope this is somewhat helpful.
Dan I really don't think highly debated is even right to say. In highly elastic movements many researchers will tell you it actually hinders explosive movements. It puts the muscles to sleep (GTO). Also, bone stays the same length correct? If we continue to stretch the fascia and tendons etc, we create natural joint instability while dampening the elastic response the tendons and muscles can provide
in the given movement. All static stretching is like Isometric training. So, if you incorporate large volumes of Iso work in extreme positions, it takes care of itself.
My programs do not do extra stretching exercises per say. Range of motion is included in the training itself. The more you stretch, the more you disrupt the elastic elements of the contraction action. This could result in injury. If you do not have the strength capabilities to control your newfound flexibility, you can very easily hurt your self. What is flexibility then, running is specific flexibility. Dynamic mobility warm up is specific to what we do.
How does an Olympic weightlifter warm up? I never see them stretching. They use the movement they will perform on the stage with lighter weights until they feel they are ready. We have to watch these kids on the playground like you mentioned and understand why they don't pull up. Have they been introduced to stretching or strength training means yet?
We, by stretching and deprogramming the nervous system, tend to add to these injuries as kids start to train. This combined with the refusal to understand that the nervous system controls everything are some of the faults out there they may be the leading cause of our injuries.
That's why its over rated for the healthy athlete. It's all about the nervous system!
Bill Hartman Well said Dan!
Any concerns over the viscous component of the muscle tendon unit will progressively adapt via repetitive movements and sport specific activities without the concern of instability or promotion of injury.
All my athletes perform flexibility training...but they don't stretch. ;)
