How hard! My step-son was 12 when he started having seizures 26 years ago.
No known cause. He's had grand mal and complex partials.
I had to learn that he would "fight" (basically brush us off) if he saw
hands coming near his face or if he felt cornered. I'd have to do a lot of
coaxing and control behind his back so he wouldn't see me coming at him and
think he was being attacked.
He's been seeing Dr. Holmes at the Regional Epilepsy Center at Harborview in
Seattle since 2002 and has had excellent care and now has the best control
ever in his life. He's on three meds - Lyrica, Keppra and Felbatol (a
high-risk med used only as a last resort) - and has a Vagus Nerve Stimulator
(VNS) implant.
The postictal period is any time after a seizure..... people can do really
strange things during this period.
Make sure he's seeing a top-notch seizure specialist!
Sherry

Subject: [Cent_Wa_Epilepsy_Support] after the seizure
Hello, my name is Sophie and I just joined this group. Background: My
husband is 37 years old and has had grand mal seizures for the past 20 years
or so. He was hit by a car when he was 7 years old and started having
seizures when he turned 18. He has seizures about 6 times a year. My
question for the group: starting about a year ago, he started having
something called a post-ictal period where after he has a seizure, he
becomes agitated and confused and keeps trying to stand up and walk, even
though he is not ready, and falls down several times. I am worried he will
get a concussion or hurt himself when he falls down. He yells at me to stop
trying to get him to stay down. Do other people experience this post-ictal
period of confusion/agitation and try to get up and walk? What can I do? He
tells me afterwards, once he is fully conscious, that he knows he should
stay down until he is ready to get up. But it keeps happening. He never used
to do this, he used to stay down until he was able to get up and walk.
