Patti - I"ve been out of town, or I would have answered sooner. My daughter's 12 now and has had seizures since she was 10 months. She does have absence seizures (still does) as well as grand mal (thank God only one in the last 12 months). She did take Zarontin when she was 3 to 5. The stuff does taste like crap. One thing that helped was to put it in a syringe, not a spoon...then I just "shot" it in there and she had no choice but to swallow. You can also ask the pharmacist to add additional flavoring. Good old bribery or an award for the week for taking her medicine without a fuss also helped. I think when she figured out that she was going to take it regardless, she quit fighting it (now you're bringing back the memories!!). I do recall pinning her down a time or two!!
Good luck! I also think my daughter was 4 when she started taking pills.

I am looking for wisdom! I have a 4 year old recently diagnosed with
absence seizures. She is to take Zarontin twice a day. This child has
never ever willingly taken medication. I usually end up wearing it. I
have been hiding the Zarontin in food and drink but she figures it out
and then refuses to eat or drink that item. I am so very frustrated
and worried. I can see the seizures get worse when she doesn't get a
dose. Can anyone offer suggestions?
