Re: [Carersforumuk] Substance Abuse May Account for Most Violent Acts in Schizophrenia

Did you read about the PCT's withholding funding for respite to carers on Carers uk?

Apparently PCT's have been given funding for this and seemed to have not realised what it was meant to have been used for.

And did you know that PCT's fund some direct payments it is not all down to social services. I worked with a carer whose husband wanted a service, admittedly it would also benefit the carer. The confusion was about who should pay for this, I kept on for more than a year. It ended up that even though the carer would benefit as in respite, the service was for the service user. What it involved was the service user following up a hobby he has and needed someone with him. The direct payment was funded by the PCT in the end, the s/u got what he needed and the carer had time to do things she was unable to do before. As in time to herself, going to the gym, shopping, visiting friends.

MH Services is giving ony £250 in Harrow to carers for respite. They seem to have forgotten about the 'One off' Direct Payment. Maybe the new Personalisation  & Self Directed Support in partnership with local council will unearth some funding?

PCT used new government money for carers elsewhere as not ring fenced....answer to question at their recent AGM.

Enjoy the break, Georgie.

Love, Ann.

Absolutely right it's disgraceful, my son gave a speech to 300 pharmacists recently and he received a standing ovation. This helped me with my feelings of utter disgust for the pain he has suffered through stigma. Respect is far too long overdue Gx

I think this should come under discrimination on a par with racial discrimination. Personally I can't see the difference.

What about all those London knife murders? Weren't there about 20 stabbings in the space of 6 months or something? It would be interesting to know how many of the perpetrators of that series of crimes were 'mentally ill'....I seem to remember that there was little mention of such factors at the time. Yet when one person with a diagnosis of schizophrenia does something horrendous, everyone is running for the nuclear bunker at the first sight of a full moon. I read the opening chapters of a Val McDermid book, an author who does nothing for me whatsoever.. ..it was set on a mental ward and was riddled with cliches about the full moon and how it supposedly, in the writer's head, caused uncontrollable outbreaks of violence.
People tend to read and believe this sort of crap...alcohol causes far more problems socially, but of course, nobody wants to prattle on about that lest the massive booze industry should somehow be held accountable.

I think crimes of violence are often triggered by alcohol and drug abuse, minus mental illness. We see and hear enough about it in the news almost daily, I also think it's down to the individuals nature whether they are violent or not. Not the fact they have schizophrenia, it always gets to me that schizophrenia is targeted. All this article does is endorse the misconception that people with schizophrenia have a potential for violence. Rarely is it mentioned that people with depression, post natal depression Bi polar and other can also become psychotic, it's always schizophrenia that is highlighted.
