Hi Rachel - we had a hard time finding not only a group that was not
capped, but that took our insurance and worked with children
exclusively - we got a great recommendation for JFK from Shadow Kids
and then two others from other support groups locally. JFK
rehabilitation is on James Street in Edison and we love them. They
have speech, feeding, physical and occupational therapy for kids!
April
Allison - he came highly recommended so we booked an apt - but they did
they old bait and switch - we wind up seeing Dr. Topper - who was hard
to understand and wrote a very poorly written (ie use of Eng lang bad
and sentence structure way off) report that I had to write and call
several times to have an adendum. So if you book it make sure you get
who you asked for.
April
ps - his dx was spot on however.
Has some time to pick up this new book (and pay my library late fee!)
which you will enjoy reading. It's a scientific look at Autism, new
studies on GI, MMR Vaccines, Immune system and G/C free diets. Very
non bias and good to bring to your physician's apt to point to some
concerns you probably have.
Dr. Jepson's own son was dx with Autism and I think he faces a great
deal of challenges that you might have.
Happy New year
April
Hi Rachel
I am new to this group. I live in southern Middlesex county to and we
take my ds to a wonderful OT who does all sensory intergration stuff
with him. She works for Children's Specialized Hosptial in Hamilton
it takes about 40 minutes to get there but Jessica is so worth the
ride. Also our OT from EI has a friend who started up
www.theinteractiveplayground.com. Good luck and I hope you find someone

Hello, and Happy New year to everyone, My sons pediatric Neurologist has been wonderful, we go to Dr Mahalingam, in New Brunswick NJ and she has a nurse practioner who is also wonderful, Bethany Hutchinson. their number is 732-235-7875 My son has Epilepsy, and they new that he could not wait three months for an appointment when he was having between 30-40 seizures a day. I wish someone would explain that to the pediatric neurology people at CSH, because a 3 month wait with child who is actively seizing was the best that they could do. I guess it all comes back to money, they are extravagent enough to have Bethany take the phone calls
from parents like me who call and say the MY child is Actively Seizing, daily. I hope CSH can do great things will all the money that they are saving. Dr Mahalingam did an EEG within two days of my phone call, and it was abnormal. She also noticed his seizures (myoclonic) while he sat on my lap in her office, and she did NOT think he could be treated with tummy time or a three month wait. Please call as many people as you can, good healthcare shouldnt be like getting a lucky break in Hollywood, but, for my son, it was. This was one heck of a year, and I am glad its OVER!!! Diane

Hi,
Has anyone ever heard of, or used, Dr. Elliott Grossman, a neurologist in Florham Park? He works with children and may have a specialty in ADD.
I totally agree with you. We were not happy with Dr. Mintz at all either. A waste of time and money and he did not diagnois our son correctly. It is def. worth waiting for a good doctor, if you have to. I highly recommend Dr. James Coplan (in Philadelphia) from Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics of the Main Line. Let me know if you need more info. on him. He is fantastic!! :)-

I'd suggest you find someone else even through you have to wait for a few months.

Hi,
Has anyone ever heard of, or used, Dr. Elliott Grossman, a neurologist in Florham Park? He works with children and may have a specialty in ADD.
Hi, All,
We're considering moving to Bridgewater, and I have
a 3.5 years old boy on the spectrum. Although he is on the mild
side, he still needs some ABA training, maybe half day ABA and half day
pre-school disabled class. Anybody lives in Bridgewater or knows their
special edu programs, could you please share your thoughts on the
followings: How do you like their programs in general? Do you
feel the school district tries hard to customize their program to fit
your child's needs? Are their ABA program strictly ABA based or VB
based? Do they put all high functioning kids in a separate ABA class?
Are you happy about your kid's progress, teachers, aids?
Thank you for your input.
Jessica

Yes....I actually took my son to him for an evaluation a little over a year ago. I was not very pleased with his services. He charged us a lot of money and did not put in the time to really looking at my son. The eval was very quick and not thorough enough. I would not recommend him to any one.
I currently work as an ABA therapist for an agency (previously at PCDI before I had any children) and I had a very good idea that my son had PDD-NOS. Dr. Mintz did not feel that he did. He has now been diagnosed since Dr. Mintz's appt. .......when I really knew all along. Dr. Mintz did not really take my professional opinion into account and disregarded my idea that he was on the spectrum.
Let me know if you'd like me to tell you more about him or the eval. I also have a wonderful Neurodevelopmental pediatrician that I would highly recommend, that my son went to May of this year. I would love to speak with you more about any of this. :)

The burden of proof at due process hearings must be placed on school districts!
Parents of students with disabilities have the right to a hearing if they believe that their child is not receiving an appropriate education. The New Jersey Supreme Court ruled in the 1989 Lascari decision that the burden of proof at these hearings should be borne by school districts because the school district had access to the information and to the experts needed to show the appropriateness of its educational decisions. In 2005, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Schaffer v. Weast that, absent state law to the contrary, the burden of proof lies with the party seeking to change the educational services most frequently the parents. Since 2005, the burden of proof has fallen on parents, making winning at hearings exceedingly difficult -- especially for poor parents who cannot afford lawyers. However, State legislators have introduced legislation that will return the burden of proof to school districts, as had been the law in New Jersey from 1989 until 2005. Assembly bill A-4076, and the Senate companion bill, S-2064, have been voted unanimously out of the respective education committees, and A-4076 is expected to be posted for vote by the full Assembly this Thursday, December 13th at 1:00 p.m.
