Family Wins Case In Autism Coverage
Lawsuit Anthem Ordered To Cover Costs Of Autism Therapy

http://www.my58.com/health/14735922/detail.html

Like most mothers, Jill Tappert searched for treatment plans --
anything that would help her daughter live as normal a life as
possible.
Today, Abby is quite capable of having a conversation at the
lunch
table.
She even has an extensive dinosaur collection that she loves to
line
up and name off.
Her mother credits Abby's remarkable progress to a treatment plan
called Applied Behavior Analysis or ABA.
The only problem with the plan was it wasn't covered by their
insurance company and it wasn't cheap. In fact, two years of treatment
cost
the family about $110,000.
But, Jill Tappert didn't give up.
She launched appeal after appeal and finally called in a lawyer.
Last week, an arbiter sided with the Tapperts and awarded them
$110,000.
It was an important decision for the Tapperts and other families
of
autistic children across the U.S.
"I do think it sets a precedent for some families, families that
have
a PPO policy with Anthem including other states. (They) will be able to
look
at the ruling and go Anthem's policy is flawed. ABA is the standard of
care
in treating autism," said Tappert.
But, Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield said not so fast.
In a statement the company said: "This decision is not a
broad-based
declaration that ABA therapy is 'medically necessary' in all cases. To
what
extent this type of therapy should be covered...should be made by
legislators and/or the division of insurance."
The ruling's implication is still unknown but the Tapperts said
it's a
step in the right direction.
Anthem said several insurance companies do not currently provide
ABA
coverage.
They said if a family would like to make a claim for ABA coverage
they
will evaluate them on a case-by-case basis.
Family Voices of Colorado helps families with the appeals and
filing
process. You can contact them at 1-800-881-8272 or via the Web at

Hi Everyone,

Kyle is having some wierd fight or flight responses lately and we think
he needs to see a neurologist. His pupils are dialated and he is
telling us he is hot and it seems his heart is pounding..

We saw one when Kyle was 15 months but I am not confident that he will
do a work up on Kyle and not refer us to someone else. Unless that is
most appropriate but we are not sure who we should see?

We need someone who is thorough, will go the extra mile to investigate

Any ideas??

Hi Christine,
You have a wonderful reputation-- just wanted to let you know and the rest of the group!  I was hoping that you'd be able to service my son via E.I. but then heard that his father is sadly not setting any date (since August 2007) to have you begin.

If I can help in any way, please let me know.

We need someone who is thorough, will go the extra mile to investigate
some things, do tests and is kid friendly...

Any ideas??

Thanks
Tina

We've taken Tyler there too and I think
you're right about his daughter.

Plus, if you have a Kids Stuff book
there is a coupon in there for buy 1 pair,
get another pair for half price.

They were helpful when my daughter was younger and
wore orthotics. They knew which sneakers and shoes
were lightweight, had good grip (not slippery), etc.
I think Stan's daughter might be a PT, but that's
going from my rusty memory.

Has anyone found a good place to buy shoes for kids with special needs???  My son has inserts now, we will see if they work, we might need AFO's if they arent enough for him.  He is 20 months old, and just starting to walk!!!  It is so exciting!!!  Our Physical Therapist will meet us at the shoe store, and help find the right type of shoes for him.    I was wondering if anyone has bought shoes, and is there a place that anyone likes for kids shoes??  Thanks Diane

We received a handicap placard from NJDMV last year for my 6year old
daughter with Autism. Our doctor filled out the form and wrote she
has Autism and is unable to recognize the dangers of parking areas
and cars. We got our placard within 6 business days with no problem.

Hi,

Welcome to Bridgewater. I use Stephanie Levine of
Somerset Pediatric Group. The group has an office in
Bridgewater. I travel to the Bedminster office (which
would be about 15-20 minutes away for you, vs. 10 or
so for the Bridgewater office). She does not claim to
be an expert on autism. She is great about writing
whatever letter or prescription needs writing - for
PT, OT, etc. They have 7 day a week sick
appointments. It's a huge practice. Of course for
sick appointments, you get who you get. You can ask
for someone, but you are going to get who is working
that day. When I approached her about a different vax
schedule for my daughter, she was supportive, and has
continued to be as we go. The staff in the Bedminster
office is lovely as well.

Again, welcome!
Eileen
