Try Kuts for Kids on Amwell Rd. (in by Pheasant Landings) they have videos and tv's for the kids to watch (nice distraction) and they are quick. Make an appointment so you don't have to wait, we have been going there for years.

Tracey,   another possible pediatric neurodevelopmental specialist is in Robert Wood, New Brunswick,    if you go to www.rwjuh.edu, and under find physicians look up neurodevelopmental, Dr Seshadri, and another doctor, but I cant remember the name, My son sees Dr Mahalingam, a pediatric neurologist, she is AWESOME!   If you talk to Bethany Hutchinson, the nurse practicioner, she will be very helpful!  Dr Seshadri's number is 732-235-7895  There is another neurodevelopmental doctor too, and there are child psychiatry doctor's on the list if you need them too! I hope things turn out well for you! Diane

Hi Diane,

I did call the insurance company yesterday and after the whole thing,
they finally suggested that the ped neurologist call so they could
discuss diagnoses and what would be covered.

I heard the Dr. Mars and her group were no longer accepting clients
outside of Hunterdon County. And the wait is approximately 1 year.

I had been homeschooling my son before but finally realized I need
help with his issues so we're trying to get as much information about
his difficulties before he enters school in the fall.

Tracey

He has been diagnosed with SPD; other diagnoses could be: learning
disabled, ODD, and anxiety

Hi Amy,   Pediatric Urology Associates  at 557 Cranbury Rd, East Brunswick NJ   732-613-9144       Also, Dr Weiss is at the CAB building, on the RWJUH Campus, in New Brunswick,  If you go to www.rwjuh.edu   and look under find physicians, you can find various pediatric specialists.   Also, if you need a ped. nephrologist, (a KIdney specialist) there are three, Dr Reisman took care of my Godchild, he's at 89 Plum ST.  New Brunswick, 732-235-7880      I was there recently with my son, to the ped. Gastroenterology, and the building is very user friendly, valet parking meets you at the door, and elevators make it easy.   Good luck!  Diane

Center in Flemington, on Rt 31 Their procedure is usuallly that
they send you a packet and you get it filled out, then send it back
for the appointment, they are highly recommended by a lot of people
around this area, and it is worth the effort to get the forms filled
out. Good luck, Diane

Hi Colleen,

I hadn't heard of the age requirement before. I know that it can be
performed as young as 5 - my son's age. The ped neurologist highly
recommended it before school starts.

TRUSTS AND GUARDIANSHIP FOR FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Guardianship is a method available to legally empower one person to make decisions for someone who may not be able to make decisions for him or herself.  When a child with special needs turns 18, parents lose the legal right to make surrogate decisions.
When preparing a will, careful planning is essential to ensure that family members with special needs are protected, and assets are not needlessly depleted. Consideration must be given to ensuring eligibility, both now and in the future, for services and benefits. Special trusts and other legal arrangements are often needed to assure a secure and comfortable future for the beneficiaries.

Hi Tracey,  I would call your insurance and ask them for the names and phone numbers of any participating neuropsychologists.   They might even have a directory online to search.  You probably also need a referral from his primary doctor, his pediatrician, especially if you are in an HMO.   Good Luck, Diane

Hello everyone,

It is with regret that I have to inform you that Valerie Powers Smith will NOT be speaking on Aug. 24.  Valerie has had some health concerns that forced her to cancel our presentation twice and unfortunately she is not back to work full time as she expected she would be when she rescheduled and regretfully she cannot attend.  We have replaced Valerie with Paul Prior, also of Hinkle, Fingles and Prior.  Paul will be presenting on Guardianship and special needs trusts.

Please accept our apology for this inconvenience.  I hope that you will consider attending Paul's presentation - the information he will provide will prove to be invaluable for all our families.

Tina, This is a site for the NJ parent to parent portion of SPANN,  I was "matched" with a Mom of a child who has a similar type of epilepsy as my son.   I have actually had a terrific experience with this match, because she has been very helpful to me, and I hope that I have been of some help to her as well!!  I'm not sure if this fits in to the Peer Support you referred to at the meeting last nite, but another benefit of this is that it doesnt require coming to meetings, sometimes the weather can be an obstacle to getting out to places.   Maybe some of the priniciples that are part of Parent to Parent from SPANN could be incorporated into your plans??  It was great to see you at the meeting last nite, I hope the presentation with Ms Powers will be a success!!  Diane
