All that I can add to this discussion is that there
are substitute aides for the classroom, who get calls
just as substitute teachers would. I do know there is
a shortage of them.

I do not know about the legality of it. It's one of
those things that probably is illegal, but they get
away with it all the time, as no one will take them to
court over it.

My daughter has in class support for science and social studies
( as per her IEP).  Her aide has been absent for the past 3 weeks.
The district has provided no substitute for her.  Can they do that?

I did email her case manager who apologized for the "inconvenience"
and told me that a new aide has been hired and will start on Dec 15th.
However, by then she will have no in-class support for 5 weeks.

Any thoughts, suggestions .............

Thanks!

FDA Panel Slams Rising Antipsychotic Use In Kids
By Ed Silverman // November 19th, 2008 // 6:42 am

After a steady stream of reports that antipsychotics are increasingly
prescribed to children, often for unapproved uses, such as treating
attention deficit disorders, an FDA advisory committee yesterday
chastised the FDA for not doing more to discourage such prescribing.

For instance, more than 389,000 youngsters last year were given
Johnson & Johnson's Risperdal, and 240,000 were 12 or younger, The
New York Times writes. Often, the drug was prescribed to treat
attention deficit disorders, but Risperdal is not approved for that
use and its risks - weight gain, metabolic disorders and possibly
permanent muscular tics - aren't justified, panel members said.

"This committee is frustrated," Leon Dure, a pediatric neurologist
from the University of Alabama School of Medicine and panel member,
told the meeting. "And we need to find a way to accommodate this
concern of ours."

However, Tom Laughren, director of the FDA's division of psychiatry
products, told the panel that the agency could do little to fix the
problem and, instead, pointed the finger at medical specialty
societies, which he insisted must do a better job educating doctors
about side effects.

The meeting started as a routine review of the pediatric safety of
Risperdal and Lilly's Zyprexa, and the FDA proposed the committee
endorse its safety monitoring and support previous efforts to
highlight risks. But the panel unanimously rejected the proposals,
saying far more needed to be done to discourage rising prescribing to
children, particularly for unapproved uses, according to the Times.

"The data show there is a substantial amount of prescribing for
attention deficit disorder, and I wonder if we have given enough
weight to the adverse-event profile of the drug in light of this,"
Daniel Notterman, a senior health policy analyst at Princeton
University and a panel member, told the meeting.

FDA officials responded that they already placed strong warnings on
labels. "I'm a little puzzled about the statement that the label is
inadequate," Laughren told the panel. "I'm anxious to hear what more
we can do in the labeling."

But panelists said the current warnings were not enough, and while
they spoke at length about Risperdal, they said their concerns
applied to the other medicines in its class, including Zyprexa,
Seroquel, Abilify and Geodon, the Times writes.

Prescription rates for the drugs have increased more than fivefold
for children in the past decade and a half, and doctors now use the
drugs to settle outbursts and aggression in children with a wide
variety of diagnoses, even though children are especially susceptible
to side effects, the paper writes.

A consortium of state Medicaid directors is evaluating the use of the
drugs in children on state Medicaid rolls to ensure that they are
being properly prescribed. The growing use of the medicines has been
driven partly by the sudden popularity of the diagnosis of pediatric
bipolar disorder.

The leading advocate for the bipolar diagnosis is Joseph Biederman, a
child psychiatrist at Harvard University who is being investigaged by
the US Senate Finance Committee for allegedly failing to report to
the university at least $1.4 million in outside income from
drugmakers that sell antipsychotics.

In the past year, Risperdal prescriptions to patients 17 and younger
increased 10 percent, while prescriptions among adults declined 5
percent. Most of the pediatric prescriptions were written by
psychiatrists, the Times notes.

From 1993 through the first three months of 2008, 1,207 children
given Risperdal suffered serious problems, including 31 who died,
according to the Times. Among the deaths was a 9-year-old with
attention deficit problems who suffered a fatal stroke 12 days after
starting therapy with Risperdal. At least 11 of the deaths were
children whose treatment with Risperdal was unapproved by the FDA.

Panel members said they had for years been concerned about the
effects of Risperdal and similar meds, but FDA officials said no
studies had been done to test the drugs' long-term safety.

Dure told the meeting he was concerned that doctors often failed to
recognize the movement disorders, including tardive dyskinesia and
dystonia, that can result from using these medicines.

Dear Families,

I am an occupational therapist in the process of gaining my certification in Sensory Integration, including administering the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT).  I am in need of two families to complete a case study on the child.  The requirements for the child should be:

4y0m to 8y11m with suspected special needs (may also have a diagnosis)
Must be able to following one and two step directions
Should be able to attend to test directions
The child is preferred to not have had therapy with a sensory integration focus

The test will take me approximately three hours to administer and most likely would be divided into two testing session.  I will need permission to video tape the child during a typical activity such as playing.  There is no fee and you will receive a copy of the testing scores (but these would not be considered valid for a formal assessment, due to the learning nature of testing and the certification process).  Please contact me through Epona Therapy Services at EponaTherapy@...

Hello Families Network! We have just received word from the Division of
Developmental Disabilities that the letters we requested as part of our
advocacy on the residential waiting list were sent out on Friday. This
means that if you are on the Priority Category of the waiting list you
should receive a letter telling you where you are on the list. We are
very pleased to hear that the letters have finally gone out. Please
don't hesitate to contact me if you think you should receive a letter,
but do not get one.

Also, at The Arc of The US's convention last week, Geraldo Rivera
pledged to use his show on January 6th - the anniversary of his expose
into Willowbrook State School in Staten Island - to bring attention to
the national waiting list crisis. Geraldo at Large is filmed in NY and
Mr. Rivera lives in Bergen County, so we have an excellent opportunity
to have your stories heard. Celine Fortin, the Associate Executive
Director at The Arc of New Jersey will be collecting as many waiting
list stories as possible and coordinating their delivery to Mr. Rivera.
If you are willing to share your story, be interviewed, etc. please
contact Celine at (732) 246-2525, ext. 25 or cfortin@....

For those of you who are new to the Families Network and are not yet
familiar with the issue of the community residential waiting list, you
can find a summary of the issue and what we have been doing to address
it at http://www.arcnj.org/html/waiting_lists_for_services.html. I am
always available if you have any questions or would like more
information about this or any other issue.

Hi Diane

If the Evaluation Plan Meeting form indicates that a Psychological Evaluation will be completed, then the district is required to have an individual certified in this area to complete the evaluation.  I have worked in districts that have called upon the county commission to provide a substitute (this happened in a Middlesex County district).  I have also worked in schools that informed the parents that a psychological would not be performed due to maternity leave, and thus did not check it off during the evaluation plan meeting.  A psychological evaluation is not required for the preschool disabled classification, so perhaps the district can utilize two other CST professionals to determine eligibility.

Hi Diane,
Unfortunately I am not replying to answer your question but instead to ask you for advise. We will have our first meeting with our son's study team the first week of December. Any suggestions or advise for this meeting will be greatly appreciated.
Are you going to the lecture at the Bridgewater Library next Thursday? They are having one on  how to advocate for your child with special needs. Similar to the one we went and met...hope you remember me. Anyway, I am going. Also, is your son going to the Bridgewater pre-school?

Hi Diana, Debra, and Lauren,

I’m writing on behalf of the AAP NJ and PCORE – There’s an opportunity for parents /patients to nominate pediatric champions to the national AAP.  All parents, especially those with a child with special health care needs, recognize and appreciate pediatric champions.  Four winners will be chosen nationally.

We would really appreciate your help in spreading the word through the many parent networks.  Thanks, Fran

Extra! Extra! …

Attention NJ Parents… Please help us recognize pediatric champions in New Jersey. If you feel your child’s pediatrician is a pediatric champion, here’s an opportunity for you!

The American Academy of Pediatrics is calling for parent/patient nominations of pediatric heroes at www.AAPexperieNCE.org/heroes now through January.

Four winners will receive travel expenses and

registration paid to the 2009 National Conference &

Exhibition in Washington, D.C., October 17-20, 2009.

Johnson and Johnson--Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals Company Announces
Urgent Voluntary Nationwide Recall Of Infants' Mylicon Gas Relief Dye
Free Drops (Simethicone-Antigas) Non-Staining Due To Possible Metal
Fragments (November 7)
<http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/johnsonjohnson11_08.html>
/Tue, 11 Nov 2008 15:52:00 -0600/

Johnson and Johnson -- Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals Company (JJMCP)
is voluntarily recalling approximately 12,000 units of Infants' MYLICON
GAS RELIEF DYE FREE drops (simethicone-antigas) non-staining sold in 1
oz. plastic bottles that were distributed after October 5, 2008
nationwide. The company is taking this action in consultation with the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration (FDA). Although the potential for serious medical
events is low, the company is implementing this recall to the
consumer level as a precaution after determining that some bottles could
include metal fragments that were generated during the manufacturing process.
If any medical events were to occur, most are expected to be temporary
and resolve without medical treatment. Parents who have given the product
to their infant and are concerned should contact their health care
provider immediately.

I would hope and tend to believe that reforms would be across the board for all children.  I know that one of the key mandates for President Elect Obama is health care.   My children do have autism and I'm involved in an autism special interest group so my knowledge has mostly to do with autism issues.

I hope this answers your question, if not you can always email, phone or write to Obama's camp and find out where he stands on the issue of healthcare for all children with any disability.

Sincerely,

E. Delgado

Sorry, I should probably read this first, but, I have to ask.  Does this insurance reform cover children who have developmental delays that are not from Autism??   My son does not have Autism, but, he does have a combination of neurologic problems, and he might have learning disabilities, he is too young to know at this time.
 Thanks,
Diane, mother of Amanda, 5, typically-developing Princess, and Joe-Joe, 2.5 with Epilepsy, external hydrocephalus, undescended testicle (repaired with surgery), mild sensorineural hearing loss, heart murmur, and various developmental delays, especially in the gross motor area

President-Elect Barack Obama on Autism: "A new dawn of American leadership is at hand"

(November 5, 2008) President-Elect Barack Obama's win last night may prove to be a win for the autism community as well.  In his campaign statement on Autism Spectrum Disorders, Obama has committed to bringing autism insurance reform to our entire nation.
His statement reads, Obama and Biden "will mandate insurance coverage of autism treatment and will also continue to work with parents, physicians, providers, researchers, and schools to create opportunities and effective solutions for people with ASD."
