Subject: CFS study in your area
Dear Association Friend,
We are writing to let you know about a study in your area that is
currently recruiting CFS patients. Drs. Jose Montoya and Andreas
Kogelnik of Stanford Hospital Infectious Disease Clinic are planning a
double-blinded placebo-controlled trial to determine whether patients
with Viral Induced CNS Dysfunction (VICD) would benefit from
valganciclovir treatment. VICD describes the subset of CFS patients who
have elevated human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6) and Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)
titers and clinical symptoms of a viral syndrome with neurocognitive
complaints and sustained fatigue.
The study will enroll 30 patients and is expected to start in the spring
of 2007. This trial was precipitated through a preliminary study
conducted by Drs. Montoya and Kogelnik announced at the 2006 HHV-6 & 7
Conference in Barcelona which reported the successful response to
antiviral treatment experienced by nine out of 12 (75%) of patients
chronically infected with elevated HHV-6 and EBV and who were suffering
from debilitating fatigue for more than one year.
Dr. Montoya is in the process of collecting data from prospective
patients for this clinical trial. If you are interested in participating
in the trial, please send an e-mail to stanfordtrial@...
or visit www.vicd.info for more details.
