Hi! I am looking for information/support. I recently adopted a
daughter with SWCAH. She is two years old. I took her to the
ped endrocrinologist last week because I noticed that some things
seemed a bit unusual. She is going through early puberty. They
did an ultrasound and confirmed that her uterus is indeed bigger
(evidently a sign of puberty) and did a bunch of blood tests, which,
as of today, are still not back.
The doctor said she'd never seen a case of early puberty quite so
early. I understand that there are ways to "stop" things but was
just wanting some input from those who had "been there".
Thanks,
Patty Notch
I don't know of any adult doctors, but I would suggest
that you contact Department
of Urology
University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and contact Dr.
Reiner who is both a urologist and a psychiatrist, who works with
patients with CAH and who would be able to refer you to an adult doctor.
I would also connect with a social worker at the hospital he send you to,
to help sort out funding. You can contact Dr. Reiner at
william-reiner@...

When Amanda and Elizabeth had their surgeries we were in Texas and then Salt
Lake City Utah. The doctors we had were great, but they specialized in
children. Has the endocrinologist made any suggestions as far as surgeons
are concerned? You could always go for the initial consult and ask if there
were any previous patients that were willing to discuss their experiences
with you.
As far as money is concerned, I have no suggestions for you other than to
discuss it with the hospital. Many times they can set up payment options,
write off portions of the bill, etc. My dh is military and so our insurance
picked up most of the bill. You should also check with your insurance
company.
Sorry, that's the best advice I have...anyone else?

Hello, we are so glad to have others in the same boat as us and we
were wanting to shed a little light on the problems now that we know
that this is a site to be trusted. Teresa has had a clitoris
reduction and we do not recomend it to most people because the
sensations are cut almost all the way so a lot of the pleasure is
gone. But Teresa also needs a surgery to correct the vaginal opening
from the size of a pencil lead to the "normal" size. If anyone out
there knows a trustworthy doctor close to Oklahoma we would greatly
appreciate it. Also if anyone knows any programs which to get
finacial help for this(what we have been told could turn into a
dangerous) problem we would be indebted for life.

Hi Mark and Theresa,
I am Barbara Neilson, a paediatric urology social worker at Sick Kids in
Toronto. I can't remember when I signed onto this group, but I belive
that your post is the first one that I have seen. From what you have
described I assume that your wife may need a vaginoplasty or dilations,
if she had surgery previously. For sure you need to see an
experienced gynecologist in this area. Have you had a referral to
anyone?

Hello, we are Mark and Teresa Smith. Teresa is a 26 year old
CAH
patient (salt wasting type) and we are actually looking for someone
that is having the same kinds of problems that we are and that could
hopefully direct us to where we can go to get some help. We have been
married for almost three years now and have never been able to
consumate our relationship and that is all I will say on that unless
I am asked for more info. We are looking to find someone who is in
the same situation to talk to and find some info about doctors and
other things as well. If you would like to know more feel free to
write us at markandtcsmith@.... We also have IM under the same
name.
Dear Mark and Teresa,
Welcome to the group. We're usually pretty quiet here unless someone
has a specific question and then I find they are quite informative!
I am going to assume that Teresa sees an endocrinologist, correct? And
again I am going to assume the doctor is aware of your difficulty? What
have
they recommended? Its difficult to know what advise to offer when I don't
really
understand your problem. My twins have had two surgeries, a clitoroplasty
and
a vaginoplasty (please forgive my spelling ignorance....not sure if either
of those
are spelled correctly). We recently visited a ob/gyn surgeon to check on
everything
and she told us that when they become sexually active (and they're only 15
and not
allowed to do that until they're 30! LOL!!!) that everything would be fine.
We
were guided to her by the endocrinologist.
If you feel uncomfortable talking on the loop, feel free to email me
privately.
Hopefully there is someone here who emailed you with some answers as well.

First, let me say I did not mean to offend, but this is the internet and
there are all kinds of people out there. I set up this group as a support
for family members because that is what I am...a mother of twin girls with
CAH. I had questions and hoped someone out there could help. All sorts of
questions. I'm game for anything. But as open-minded as I think I am, this
is a family oriented page (as I made blatently obvious in the group
description) and I have a responsibility to the group more than for one
individual.
The following is the list description:
This list is dedicated to the support of family members with Congenital
Adrenal Hyperplasia and related disorders. We welcome all questions and
discussions relating to this subject. It is rare that we ever get to meet
someone else dealing with the same difficulties and we'd like to use this as
an opportunity to get to know each other, as well as inform new parents.
Please note that this is a family-oriented page and appropriate language is
required.
I do believe that Debbi gave you some options where you might find your
answers. Just in case you missed it, here it is again:
At congenitaladrenalhyperplasia.org , there is a alternate forum where some
of
the your needs might be addressed. I think it is called controversies forum
or
something. There is also a LOCAH site and I think that forum is mostly adult
women.
-Debbi
So, before you go being "saddened and hurt" by my response, I want you to
realize that we were indeed trying to help you. But this is not the site
for that discussion. I could have just as easily deleted you from the
group.

-Yes I thought it was a legitimate question that I could get answered,
but I guess not. I was only asking for help and see that I may not get
it here. If this site is only for parents where then will the kids go
when they get to be legal age and start asking things like this?
Angela I'm sadened and hurt by your response that you want this taken
off the loop. You tell me where I should go then. Since I have been to

Hi All,
I'm new to this group and I have been on
cahsupportforum,congenitaladrenalhyperplasia,bodieslikeours,cahourstories.
These are all CAH web sites. Anyway I have tryed to find some adult
female that I could talk to. I was born with SWCAH and I'm also a
lesbian. I would like veery much if someone could please answer some
questions having to do with being with other girls that do or don't
have CAH.

Well we've all been relatively quiet lately, but I have a question for the more experienced folks here. The twins (I never call them that anywhere else, but somehow here I always do...LOL!!) had their regular check-up Monday with yet again, another new doctor. Ahhhh, the joys of being in the military and moving around constantly! LOL! Anyway, he seemed nice enough and requested all of the same tests, gave me some more information that of course, we've all heard over and over. But then surprise! He wants to change their meds from cortef to prednisone suddenly. We've been on 3 daily doses of cortef for 13 years and have grown pretty comfortable with it. And I've never heard anything positive about prednisone...there's the weight gain, and so many other side effects I've recently heard about. He said we could wait until their next appointment to do it so I could do some research and feel more comfortable with this decision. So, anybody......HELP! Positive experiences, negative, etc. I'm willing to listen to everything!
Thanks to Jillaine Smith for the following info on how to avoid YahooGroup spam:
Yahoo has just made a sneaky change to everybody's 'Marketing Preferences', the result of which will be a load of spam. To change them back here's what you need to do to avoid all the ads: Go to http://www.yahoogroups.com and login to your account. Choose "My Groups" (right side of screen) after logged in. Then choose "Account Info" at the top right of your screen. Input your password to get into your Account Info page. Your Yahoo ID card comes up. Click on 'Edit your Marketing Preferences' about halfway down the page. Notice that all your boxes now say "yes" instead of "no"??? If so, change them all back to "no" and BE SURE TO READ ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE PAGE as there are more below! Input the e-mail address to send any mail to (gee, mine was set to a Yahoo acct I never check anyway.) Say "no" if you don't want to get "deals" by snail mail or phone either (no, thanks.) CLICK TO SAVE CHANGES.

Well folks,
I don't know who this Val is except that she posts on the CAH MB and has
chosen to deluge folks who have posted on the MB (and put their email
address on their posts) with these emails because she has been banned (or so
I gather from her emails). She has also chosen to target my organization for
some reason, which I really don't understand. I am bewildered. I think it
was because her last post in response to one of my posts caused the
moderator to ban finally her. So, she blames me and my organization. But, I
am only guessing.
I don't know what to say except that I am saddened that CARES and I became
the target of her incomprehensible emails.
Kelly
Sorry for any confusion (the zebra article has nothing to do with Val and
all her emails to everyone about Danny Carlton). She wanted Danny to let her
back into the group. Danny banned her from the group for bashing. All email
loops have bashing rules and the owners can decide who they want in the
group. It looks really firm at this point that Danny is not going to change
his mind about Val (she is banned from his group). He said that he had given
too many chances already.
Why did Val email us (or a certain number of people) - I don't know. She was
upset about the Danny obviously.
Go to this web site to see who is a member or whatever -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CAHsupport/ of this email loop started by
"Angi Strong" <jaade1@...> in 1999 or so,
Again - Val is upset about the message board that Danny Carlton runs --
http://www.congenitaladrenalhyperplasia.org/mb/ and has her own group now on
MSN now on this web site below ( a member or guest thing like this yahoo
one that Angi is doing) - http://communities
.msn.co.nz/congenitaladrenalhyperplasia/chat

Nevermind.....I was just wondering what list I was on that I was recieving e-
mail and thought this group might have been the source. Since I don't know the
source, I'd rather not gossip as it would only be guessing. She is another CAH
mother who corresponds via the net.DebbiW

Deb - your question below - I don't think that this is part of Val new email
list or we would be "banned". Apparently she is mad a whole group of people
and Kelly, you and I are part of that list. Val's new group is on MSN and
this is yahoo (I don't remember who started it - I'll need to look) No one
seem to post on this site such anyway.
quote from deb:
Is it from this list that Val Jefferies has been mailing in bulk? I have no
idea what transpired on the CAH board, but wondered why I was part of her
list
since I have not commented one way or the other about ANY topic recently.

Please do not use hermaphrodite and CAH in the same story... unless you
really define CAH!!! I would hate for people to be confused over what is CAH
and think that it is related the hermaphrodite in any way. CAH girls do not
have both sexual organs. NO WAY!! They are 100% female with no male organs
what so ever. They do not have male testes or a penis. They produce too
much androgens (male hormones) but they are produced from the ovaries
(ovaries do produce male and female hormones) and not from testes. They
have breasts, ovaries and uterus. The only problem may be enlarged clitoris
and narrow vaginal opening (some salt wasting CAH baby females may have
fused vaginal and clitoris that looks like a baby penis - but it will not
develop into a man's sized penis... the fused vaginal may look as if they do
not have a vaginal - and undecented testes).
You could do a story about non-salt wasting CAH females and the problem with
non-treatment and viralization. One parent told me that her three year said,
Mommy, I am turning into a boy (enlarged clitoris). Strange words to come
out of a three year old girl's mouth. Newborn testing for CAH is a must!!
Women do suffer from non-treatment. Suffering includes: infertility or
irregular menstrual periods, enlarged clitoris, too much male hormones,
facial hair, premature sexual hair growth and puberty, acne, height spurt in
young children but then short statue as adults.
Some non-salt wasting CAH people have it so mildly that they do not need to
take medication. The medication would help them feel better but they will
not die without the medication. If they are extremely ill or surgery ...
without extra cortisol (medication) they will die.

Insurance problem is terrible!! Did you write Kelly at CARES and see if she
knows of anything. I would be lost without my health and dental insurance. I
work for the federal government and it hasn't been a problem for me to get
coverage for CAH. My insurance payments are going up this year is the only
thing but the blood test and doctor's appointment are very expensive. And
then to think about the times that I have had to go to the ER - and have IV
so they did not have adrenal crisis and die. With a fever - you can not
chance it. .. just go to the hospital and get the IVs.

Jenny,
Unfortunately I have no advice for you. We've been in the military for
the entire time the girls' have been with us....and have always had problems
too. Just wanted you to know I can totally sympathize with your situation.
We've actually been able to buy a supplement insurance to our military
coverage, but had to pay for two years before coverage would begin.
Unfortunately, they decided to drop us after a few years of being covered
because TriCare (our military insurance) was "too difficult to deal with".
They were bought out by another company who covered us, and then when we
moved to NC they decided to drop us all together claiming they didn't cover
anyone in the Carolina's....I suspect its because 50% of the armed services
live here! LOL! (Actually, it's not funny, but its either laugh or cry at
this point!) So, we're back to hunting. I know we need to get them into an
insurance plan before they get out on their own, which is probably sooner
than I'd like! Let me know if you find someone who will cover your
daughter, and if I find someone, I'll post too.

I just want to repeat that this was not a request on my part. I was simply
forwarding an email from an author who contacted me. If you would like to
reply to him/her, I included the forwarding address in the original email.
