Dear Angi,
I was recently told of a female singer in the UK that was all over the
papers where she was raised as a male, but discovered in her late teens that
she was a female with simple virilizing CAH. You might want to contact the
CLIMB group in the UK for more information, http://cah.org.uk/. So your
story is not that far-fetched.
Some Simple Virilizers can live without going into adrenal crisis. But, all
CAH affected individuals should take their meds because this is a risk not
worth taking.Genital ambiguity in females is common in both forms of
classical CAH--SW and SV. Some adults only take hydrocortisone and self
medicate for the salt by consuming what they feel their body needs. Others
take meds for this purpose. It depends on what the endo recommends and your
individual medical needs. Any treatment protocol for CAH affected adults
should be prescribed by an endocrinologist.
Good luck with the story and keep us posted on your progress.
