Are You Considering Having A TRAM Flap?
Dear Friends: Are you considering having a TRAM Flap? If so, please be aware of the following: Many mastectomies are not necessary, but continue to be performed. This leaves the woman without a breast(s). The plastic surgeons then claim that they can replace our breasts with Saline/Silicone Implants or Tissue Flaps. Tissue flaps, such as the TRAM, sever a healthy, needed part of the body -- the abdominal rectus muscles. These muscles are needed to hold in internal organs, support the spine, stabilize the trunk of the body and assist us in rising up from a bed or chair, carrying groceries, bending, having sex, exercising, etc. If doctors would stop performing unnecessary mastectomies, then there wouldn't be a market for these reconstructions. But, they continue to perform TRAM Flap operations, taking a knife and severing the abdominal rectus muscle away from the pelvic bone and sewing it to a woman's chest. Those muscles atrophy on the chest. They continue to shrink. There is no feeling because the nerves have been damaged. The intestines and uterus push forward because there is no longer the rectus muscles to hold in these internal organs. As a result, the abdominal wall herniates. There is a bulging where the intestines push out. This could result in a strangulation of the bowel and possible gangrene. Another operation has to be performed to repair the hernia. Polypropylene mesh is sewed into the woman's abdomen to keep the guts from coming out. If women received full informed consent and knew that the flap could turn black and die on their chest, that they could herniate, etc., I think that they might decide against such a damaging operation.

DIEP Flap Photos ~ Dr. Keller
Dr. Keller sells DIEP Flaps. As far as I know, he used to perform TRAM Flaps, both no longer does that operation because of the damage to the abdominal rectus muscle. At Dr. Keller's site, it states: "Both implant manufacturers and plastic surgeons take elaborate steps to try and modify this normal reaction of the body.  Therefore, a breast reconstructed with an implant can become hard, contracted, and misshapen.  The firmness can also be uncomfortable in many women. With the DIEP flap there is no reaction by the body because no foreign material was used." http://www.breastflap.com/breast_implant.htm Dr. Keller's statement is NOT accurate. Any time that surgery is performed, there is a reaction from the body. The DIEP Flap has many of the same complications as the TRAM Flap, such as death of the flap, necrosis, nerve damage, infection, etc. What will be the next breast reconstruction operation that is invented? Will Dr. Keller stop doing DIEP Flaps because of the dangers and move on to sell a new operation? At least there is the FDA to supervise breast implants; but, there is no watch group over tissue flaps.

Dr. Guthrie Talks About The TRAM Flap
And now we come again to the infamous TRAM flap; the triumph of the plastic surgeon's mania for proving it's possible to move anything anywhere even if it flies in the face of common sense. I am spending so much time talking about this operation simply because it makes me quite angry to hear that it is being done. The TRAM flap requires the full or near-full length of the rectus muscle that extends from the chest to the public bone and a far larger flap of attached skin and fat, from the belly. (For that reason it is sometimes called the long-rectus flap procedure). Many doctors try to sell the operation to patients by telling them that a side benefit of the technique is a tummy tuck, though in fact because of the bulging of the ends of the hip-to-hip scar that is left -- what some plastic surgeons refer to as "dog ears"-- the waist paradoxically grows in size. What's more, the operation usually produces an ugly, scarred misshapen blob of wide-pored, hairy, abdominal flab that sits bunched up on the chest like it had just come out a crenellated Jell-O® mold. Afterward, many women bitterly regret that they opted for this procedure instead of a simple implant or even instead of doing nothing. There's more. People have died from blood vessel obstructions and blockages to the lungs caused by fiddling around with all the abdominal fat. In up to ten percent of the patients, part of the TRAM flap turns black and dies within a few days as a result of poor circulation and must be removed. For one in ten patients, problems don't surface for three months. Then it becomes apparent that the amount of flesh and fat transplanted isn't quite right, and the patient must go through another operation to reduce or enlarge the breast size. And that becomes more risky because then the blood supply is being tinkered with, which is very tenuous in TRAM flaps. And even if the whole flap does not die, the part that was fat may melt away.

Dying From TRAM Flap Complications
I am dying because of complications from the TRAM Flap. I'm not going to get better. I am going to suffer a lot and then die. The damage done to my body is not reversible. My shoulder muscle, and the abdominal rectus muscle (sewn to my chest) are shrinking together and are like a solid mass, due to the surgeries and radiation. My abdominal area is so full and feels like one big hernia. I have to wear a binder 24 hours a day to hold my guts in. My chest and lungs hurt if I try to take a big breath. I am sore from having that drain run through my rib cage and into my lung. My back is hurting so bad from being bent over due to the absence of the abdominal rectus muscle to hold me up. I am bending over more each day due to the weight of the lymphedema of the arm and the solid mass situation with my arm and reconstructed breast. I just want you to know that I am disabled because of what the surgeons have done to me. I am NOT disabled because of the cancer. When the surgeons take a knife and dissect the lymph nodes, cut off the breast, and sever the abdominal rectus muscle and sew it to the chest where it atrophies, there is no turning back. The knife destroys body parts. It can't be fixed. Doctors harm women for money. I am dying because of what they did to me. -- Pam Young

Pam Dowd's Latissimus Dorsi Flap
Pam Dowd lives in Idaho. She had a mastectomy and reconstruction with a latissimus dorsi flap. She has never had a pain-free day since the breast reconstruction. The plastic surgeon never told her the negative aspect of flap reconstruction. She must live with the consequences. The doctors don't care how many women are left in pain and disabled. They just want their money.

Unnecessary Mastectomies Are Barbaric
Unnecessary Mastectomies Are Barbaric Unnecessary Mastectomies DR. MERCOLA'S COMMENT: Performing so many mastectomies seems to be a barbaric approach. It is understandable though when one is familiar with the traditional medical paradigm. The most important thing when it comes to cancer is PREVENTION. There are so many options to breast cancer prevention, but of course most all involve changing the diet and making some lifestyle changes and clearing up some emotional wounding. This is another article right on the money from Nicholas Regush. I am really surprised that ABCNews.com, to their credit, allow him to publish such brutally honest material. ©Copyright 1997-2003 Dr. Joseph Mercola.
