I got this PR from Al Musella's Brain Tumor Blast Posted on: 02/04/2009
This type of mobile head MRI unit program in New York City is needed for early
diagnosis of brain tumors around the whole country, especially in small cities
and rural places like Cameron, Missouri where they recently had a brain tumor
cluster. This would be an excellent fundraising project for brain tumor
advocates to collect donations to make it possible where they live.  This is a
real life saving community project.

you know who might help us get it started where you live

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Free Brain Scans Available in The Bronx

“The Bobby Murcer” Mobile MRI Unit

Continues On The Road To Early Detection

February 4, 2009 / New York, NY – The Road to Early Detection Campaign, a
project of The Brain Tumor Foundation (BTF), is bringing the Bobby Murcer Mobile
MRI Unit to the Bronx.  Beginning Monday, February 9th, the Unit will be
stationed at Morris Avenue (between 148th -149th streets) across from Lincoln
Hospital, through Monday, March 2nd.   The Bronx location was made possible
through the help and generosity of City Council Member Maria del Carmen Arroyo.

Since the launch of The Road to Early Detection campaign in November 2008, The
Bobby Murcer Mobile MRI Unit has been traveling throughout New York and its
neighboring bor
oughs reaching out to the under-served communities and offering free MRI brain
scans to those who do not have medical care available to them.  Michael
Schreiber, Chairman of The Road to Early Detection and The Brain Tumor
Foundation expressed appreciation to Councilwoman Arroyo, “for helping to
raise public awareness of this service and its importance to the community.”

With each new location, the demand becomes higher and the waiting list for
appointments grows.  Dr. Patrick Kelly, Founder and President of The Brain
Tumor Foundation explains, “It is a fact that over half of all brain tumor
patients could have their tumors successfully removed if they were detected
early, before physical symptoms become apparent.  And the only way to detect a
tumor early is through the use of MRI brains scans.”  Although the scans are
not diagnostic and are meant to serve only as a screening tool, degenerative
diseases and other abnormalities including MS and Alzheimer’s have been
detected in the several hundred scans already done.

Brain tumors occur across the board without any distinctions of age, gender,
socio-economic status or ethnicity.  This year, more than 300,000 Americans
will be diagnosed with brain tumors.  As many as a million people are walking
around with one and don’t know it -- 25,000 of them in New York City, alone.
To that end, The Brain Tumor Foundation remains committed and continues to
explore ways to enhance and expand The Road t
o Early Detection program, despite the ever escalating costs of maintaining the
Unit.

With the success of the New York launch, and through the overwhelming support of
the online Dollar Drive campaign, this pilot program will soon be rolled out
nationwide.

Scans are available by appointment only and can be scheduled by calling
877-SCAN-NYC (877-722-6692).
