Dear Friends,
Please read my letter below to my congressmen, please join me and help me to pass this on to other citizens who care and are concerned about our individual rights and civil liberties.  Why is this non-invasive cost-effective medical treatment for my life-threatening brain tumor condition being overlooked, and ignored by so many?
     DEAR SIRS:
Powerful anti-choice abortion politics must not be allowed to block the beneficial medical developments that Mifepristone may offer to some people suffering from other medical conditions.  It is believed to be a valuable health care option for some American men and women who do not want to use it for abortion. Please read the past congressional testimony of medical patients who use it for other conditions. The anti-choice legislative forces should not be allowed to rob men and women of this significant medical health care advancement for meningioma brain tumor treatment and other conditions making it illegal simply because of their stand on abortion issues.

Mifepristone promises to give some men and women, especially those who have small asymptomatic meningioma brain tumors, a safe alternative early treatment option for their slow-growing progressive brain disease.  Medical researchers have identified many potential uses for mifepristone beyond pregnancy termination, including the treatment of breast cancer, endometriosis, glaucoma, meningioma, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer and other conditions which are all being currently prohibited by abortion politics.

I think your legislative government restriction of its other uses by medical doctors is extremely unwise, (foolish? ignorant?) medically imprudent and legally unnecessary.  I participated in a government test with MRI proven stability and no growth of my brain tumor in NCI SWOG Clinical Trial 9005, Phase III for three years from 1996 to 1999.  It stopped the growth of my brain tumor and I had no permanent side effects.  The FDA declared the drug safe and effective for use as an early method of abortion.  I want to take it again after my second surgery for my recurrent meningioma.  But the (Bush?) imposed restrictions on the drug in its final FDA approval for abortion, have made it impossible for me to get it from my neuroncology doctors, since they do not provide surgical abortions.  I wonder why my right to take this drug for other medical purposes is still being prohibited by you, my representative?  I refuse to remain silent and become collateral damage, please help me educate you and other politicans to get this drug legally for myself and other meningioma brain tumor patients.
In a free democratic country, I think it is highly questionable for you to legally impose your personal view and religious opinion on abortion, in place of the medical judgment of experts at the FDA and other medical researchers in a case like this. The FDA is charged with ensuring the integrity of the drug approval process and the safety of drugs available to the American public. The FDA has made it clear that the approval of mifepristone resulted from its careful evaluation of the medical evidence under strict scientific protocols. I think it is blindly abusing your authority and totally inappropriate for any non-medical person to overrule the skilled judgment of many medical experts regarding these medical health care alternatives. How can you, in good conscience, generally prohibit the lifesaving benefical uses of this drug for other medical conditions regardless of your abortion position?

Again, I urge you to support legal access to RU-486 for its other beneficial medical uses. I look forward to your personal reply indicating your thoughts on my future quality of life and legal access to this non-invasive drug treatment for my meningioma brain tumor.  IS there anything YOU could do to change this legal roadblock before I have to have brain radiation or a third brain surgery? I write not just to legalize it for myself, but also for the thousands of other meningioma patients, men and women who might benefit from this safe, non-invasive low cost treatment option, before they have to take the life-altering risks of expensive invasive brain surgery or brain radiation. Can you help me change the law? Or open a new NCI clinical trial of the drug for meningioma, before standard expensive medical treatment options of surgery and/or radiation which may damage many precious remaining healthy brain cells?
Sincerely,
Anne McGinnis Breen
