Hello Everyone –
If you have not already done so, please subscribe to the new Brain-Finance List! There is a description near the bottom of this page about the list. Check it out! Good things are happening!
Christy this is definitely a good link!
Hospitality houses are the way to go. I have no problem putting my coin change into those Ronald McDonald collection cups! We stayed there many times. Sarah is at different one right now at Duke. Another family member and I stayed at one in Boston for many months.
These places not only provide accommodations, but also a community to share the journey. Life-long friendships are formed. It is very moving.
Keep in mind that rooms are hard to get. Get in touch with the hospital social worker well in advance if at al possible. They, along with the doctors, are the people that can get you in asap – not the staffers at the hospitality houses themselves.
Call the hospital social worker office as soon as, or even before you have decided on treatment away from home!
More love,
David

Subject: [Brain-Finance] Finding a
Place to Stay
Just ran across a very good site to help patients and
families find a place to stay when you have to go out of town for medical
treatment - whether family members of the patient, or the patient yourself when
going for outpatient treatment.
Yours,
Christy

For internet veterans, this site is not hard to navigate. Start at
"Hospitality Hotline" and go from there.
For internet beginners, here are a few tips on using this site
- click on "Hospitality Hotline"
- then click on "Member Directory"
- then select the state (Oregon, for example), here's how:
- then select city (Portland, for example):
you should see a “Directory of Houses” (shorter lists for smaller
cities…)
- click on a listing for one of the houses, you should see info (address,
phone, email, etc., plus a “Request a Room” link)
- if it says: “No information is currently available for this
listing” you should be able to look in the phone book for that city and
give them a call.
Hello! This is David Rank. You may already know about our long journey with our daughter, Sarah Dudley, and our life with a brain tumor.
We are inviting you to join a new list focusing on the financial issues families face when dealing with a catastrophic diagnosis or chronic disease. To join, email Brain-Finance-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
It is our feeling that there is an enormous gap in this area of health care and there is little in the way of constructive information and resources available to those who are so affected.
We hope to have a proactive group, ready to discuss creative solutions, break down the barriers and find ways for families in need to obtain assistance through fundraising activities, money management, employment and insurance issues, team building and so on... All the challenges that can become such a devastating burden, heaped upon the sadness of an assault on health and life itself.
Occasionally these subjects can be off-topic on other lists. This is the very purpose of this list. If you need help, or if you have good ideas you would like to share with others, please subscribe now!
We are inspired to share with you the story of our successes in our personal fundraising effort. It has been a tremendously heart-warming experience, bringing close our community as well as internet family in an unanticipated variety of ways to provide support and share in the wonders of knowing our daughter Sarah. You can learn much more about the reason we are so inspired at www.SarahDudley.com
We hope you can learn from what we have learned... and we believe there will be so many good things to come from all the creative thinkers and the broad experiences we will be able to share on this new list.
We hope to manifest positive steps to allow people to be better prepared to advocate for their own financial interests while in the whirlwind of the medical roller coaster, or while trying to recover from the after effects.
This is the beginning of a new way to discuss financial support concepts and provide assistance to others.
Thank you. Please join us. We are all in this together!
Love,
David Rank To join, email
