Brothers and sisters,

These links were sent to me buy a current sister who is living in Japan and
the posting has sparked quite a controversy on that email list.

I don't usually send forwards but decided that this one merited it. Please
check out these youtube links and feel free to write to me personally (or to the

Dear Everyone,

So I went through with it.

After work yesterday I went to my hairdresser and had the Big Chop
done. It was to date the shortest and cheapest trip to a
hairdresser in my life. In less than an hour I was out -minus about
ten inches of hair.

I didn't cry. I didn't freak out.
And I don't yet regret it.

Still it is strange. I haven't fallen in love with my reflection,
nor am I turning around all the mirrors in my house and avoiding
storefront windows. When I do see myself I think: Wow! Me?

And I am okay with that too.
My Dad (white) LOVES it. My Mom (black) HATES it.

My bf (asian) thinks I am still beautiful and has been telling me
that as often as I need to hear it. He also says I look taller and
more grown. My brother hasn't seen it yet and when I say he was
disappointed I was even thinking about cutting my hair, know that is
an understatement.

Life continues as normal. I got up. Got dressed. Went to work.
Almost normal: Is it a coincidence that I am wearing earings for the
third time this year and contacts for the fourth? Is it an accident
I am in a pencil skirt today? I guess, I am still adjusting.

Still, I can't keep my fingers out of my hair.

GK,
Good luck on your BC you will do fine. I did the BC almost 3 years ago now and
like you had several instances where I began the process and chickened out. But
when you've got "A MADE UP MIND!"...there is no stopping ya! I did transition
for nearly 7 months before the big chop wearing low maintenance styles (straw
sets, flat twists, rod sets, twist outs, etc..) and that gave me about 2 inches
of new growth when I did the BC. I loved my short hair!!!! And there was no
hiding my face behind anything. so I rocked fly earrings, kept my eyebrows
arched, and wore a little make-up.
Now, I am happily wearing shoulder length locs
I found a lot of inspiration from the sistahs and brothas on nappturality. com.
They really helped me with the transition and with my natural hair.

Good Luck and keep us posted !

Again.

And have booked an appointment for the Big Chop next Wednesday.

I have decided to get out from under the perm. The usual breakage and

And I will be losing like ten inches of hair. And not having much more

I have been talking about this all summer. For the last two years. I

I feel like I have been walking around with this HUGE secret and just

But I am also scared. I have told my best friend who has promised to

thinks it is something I talk about periodically but will never
actually do. But this time, I am doing it. (The best friend and the
hairdresser have both been told not to let me chicken out as I have
regretted that every time.) I am also hopign by telling all of you I
will have the courage, if not the pure need to stick-to-my- word to

Still what will I look like with short hair? Will I want to turn all
the mirrors around? Is my face too fat to pull this off? Am I going
to cry? Am I going to be happy with what I see? How did you respond
in that moment -that afternoon? The rest of that first week? Whenever
all the closest friends and family saw you for the first time? When
you woke up the next morning and saw yourself.

So I am on this list hoping for some encouragement and tips. And I

permed or white. My best friend is white. Not really anyone I can
turn to for natural hair advice in my current circle of friends.

My hair chop inspirations came from two directions:

I had a close friend, who was losing his battle with the AIDS virus, show me
that time is of the essence right now and that tomorrow is not promised.

When he heard I was about to cut my hair, he exclaimed, "I never told you
anything crazy like that", yet when he saw my buzzzed head, he said he loved it.

I had permed by hair for 14 years and was just ready for a change.

I threw a party and at midnight, had a barber cut my hair. I made it
ritualistic as I felt I was entering a new phase in life.

The next day when I got in the shower and completed my hair ritual in 10
minutes - vs two hours when I had a longer head of permed hair - I knew I had
made the right decision.

People told me I looked youthful. Some folks tried to convince me to return
to the perm as soon as I could and were a bit taken aback when I wouldn't perm
it.

One of my biggest detracters tried her best to get me to perm my hair
including displaying a hug bucket of perm in her living room each time I visited
her home.

Funny thing is, about a year later, she did the big chop herself!

I am a newbie to the group. I am also fairly new to my new natural
lifestyle. My last relaxer was April 2006 and the big chop was made in
September. Initially, I went through a state of shock and panic and was
not able to look at myself in the mirror for two to three days. I now
believe it was my TWA and the fact that it made me look exactly like my
mother, lol. I soon found a stylist who showed me the light and I have
been loving the new me eversince. I can't wait to see what the future
holds for me and my new do!

Don't regret accepting yourself for who God made you. I too had a difficult
time, fall of '99 when I decided that I had had my last relaxer. No, I wasn't
ready for funny faces or treatment from people, that I allowed to cause me to
want to hide my hair under a bandana. You're not the one with the issue, those
who make negative comments show their ignorance and lack of love for themselves
(assuming that they are blk as well). I believe someone already suggested that
you go to motowngirl.com. Look through some of her photos, they're very
inspiring when your in a transitional place. Also, growafrohairlong.com is
great with everyday maintainence. Just don't give up and allow yourself to get
frustrated. Keep working it until you find what works well for you

Instead of trying different products to make your hair texture more managable,
try an actual hair style that will compliment your hair texture and will be easy
to work with. I suggest double-strand twists. I think it works well on tightly
coiled hair like mine.

For doube-stand twists. Section your hair into small boxes, and one by one,
take two sections of your hair and twist them around one another. Repeat this
all of over your head, until it is full of twists. Let your hair dry, and then
take the twists apart. You will love the results! Side note: I use Elasta QP
holding gel on each twist to keep it together and to make it last longer.

suave conditioner daily when I wear an afro puff to assist in a more managable

hot six oil or something that you like. Another good moisture is the Right on
Curl activator/moisturizer. I wouldn't use tooo much because as we you use to
say back in the day, it is curl juice. But these work for me.

My neice who decided she wanted to be natural has been wearing afro puffs as
well and was very uncomfortable until I suggested some of these methods as well.
It may even take putting conditioner in a smaller bottle and keeping in your
purse to use throughout the day.

Good Luck on your journey don't give up yet!!! It was the right choice, you just

straighten it with a hot comb, it looks like a soft afro. I do not

Below is some information about Natural-Laxer.

Baka Beauty Products' Natural-Laxer MIX is 100% natural powder made
entirely of sun dried exotic herbs and Sahara Clay hair leaving it
silky smooth. The herbs used in the natural relaxer are completely
natural and completely safe. When mixed with Sahara Clay and hot
water and applied to the hair and skin, it produces miraculous

It may even take putting conditioner in a smaller bottle and keeping in your
purse to use throughout the day.

Good Luck on your journey don't give up yet!!! It was the right choice, you
just need the right methods of handling your naps!!

Lisa,

First, by no means am I an expert nor a professional hair stylist. The
following is merely my personal point of view as a former permie who has been
natural since 1999.

Remember that if you used chemicals in your hair extensively before you went
natural, a few things may be happening:

   1) Your hair my be resistant and is used to being attacked by a chemical
   2) Your natural texture may appear rather odd as you haven't worked directly
with it for a while
   3) You are attempting to style and manage your hair as if it was chemically
altered. It is no longer so and therefore you are gettting different results
than you expected.

I would say work with your hair for a while. Try blowing it out instead of
pressing it. Try embracing the "balls" and massaging your finger tips over your
scalp with conditioner when it is wet, encouraging them to form.

Give you hair a chance before you rotate into an altering chemical of any
kind.

Thanks for the great advice. I'll try the website you sugested and see what
kind of information I find there. About the texturized fro, I do think I stated
this but you probably missed that part. I am planning on going NATURAL and had
no idea what a texturized fro was. So my question was not meant to be taken in
a way that means I do not want natural hair, it was simply a question. I'm half
black so my hair is very soft and I'm a bit concerned about the result I will
get but it's worth the try. Now that I've cleared that up....thanks again for
the wonderful advice....I'm planning on chopping it all off very soon....and am
excited to see what kind of result I'll get. Thanks again, flora

Hi Southsaul, I thought I would respond to your first message where you talk
about doing the BC (Big Chop) and then getting a texturized fro. Let me start by
saying that a texturized fro is not natural. This forum is mainly for those who
have decided to stop altering their hair with either chemicals or heat. so if
you are looking for responses related to chemically altering your fresh BC, this
is probably not the place. Not meaning to sound cruel or insensitive...all that
I say is with love in my heart. Making the choice to be natural is a choice that
must be made when the time is right for you. When you are ready to experience
your hair as it is untampered with, in it's natural state. When you stop
wondering whether you hair is acceptable because your coil is toooooo tight (ya
know mother Africa, on the struggle, ya hair is holding up the black power fist)
I would advise you not to take the BC if you plan on altering your hair again by
texturizing it. You have
gone 10 months without a relaxer and you are thinking of ruining all that new
growth with a perm...oh excuse me texturizer (lye is lye) There are ways to
achieve that desired look without going to the extreme of texturizing. I
personally am loc'd. I rocked a funky Kobe Bryant Fro for a couple of months
before loc'ing, I do not have the absolute answer about having that curly look
you desire....But I would go to Napturality.com and join and talk to some
brothers and sisters there. When I made my transition three years ago, I got a
lot of great advise there and some great resources as well. You don't have to
wait and wait for responses either because there are probably already posts that
could assist you.

  Good Luck....
Remember Lye is a Lie...Don't do it! You'll be waiting another 10 months for
some new natural hair!
  T Yvette.

Hi Flora,
When I began my natural hair journey I was still permed, my hair was
shoulder length. I began to do braid sets. I did this by shampooing
& conditioning then cornrowing my hair all back while it's still
wet. I first tried it on a Friday night that way I could work with
it all day Saturday. That was 5 years ago and I'm still going
strong! I love it, my last perm was September 2001 and I haven't
looked back! So try a braid set. You can braid it wet, but make sure
it's completely dry before you take it out. Don't comb or brush it,
just take the braids out and use your hands to style it. Don't
forget to moisturize. I hope this helps!

  Peace & Blessings
  Chris

I definitely plan to try the Tresses Tranzitions. Sounds like an interesting
product and since I use Lottabody setting lotion religiously, I'm sure it will
be a keeper.

Lottabody? I get the Extreme
Curling gel from Walmart. With a little grease (indian hemp, hair
food, bergmot, etc) and this in the shower my hair looks so cute! I
recently cut all the relaxer out of my hair and now I'm wearing it
natural. I can't believe how much it curls up when its wet and
moisturized. The trick is to put it on in the shower. If you have
ever tried Pantene in the shower with soaking wet hair you may know
what I'm talking about. It almost looks like I have twists if I
don't comb it for a couple of days. Anyway, here are some links I
found that might be great for transitioning hair.

bucks a pop on getting my hair done when it was relaxed. I pretty
much follow their "shingling" technique with the Tranzitions gel)

Thanks for the tip! I never heard of the Lottabody Extreme Curl product and I
thought I had tried everything! I'll add it to my Wish List. Right now, I'm
switching between:

   Carol's Daughter

Black Vanilla Leave-In (I think that's the name), Lisa's Hair Elixir (Very

   -and-
   Jane Carter Solution

I've tried almost all of Jane Carter's products and they're awesome! I can
only find them at Whole Foods and online, but they're well worth the money. I
have very thick, curly hair (natural for almost 3 years - December 26, 2006) and
these products keep my hair very moisturized.

You stated that Olive oil doesn't work for you hair. I know that
Olive oil doesn't work for me. It left my hair crunchy. The only way
that it worked for me is if I slather it on my hair. That's a no go
for day to day. So, I turned to coconut oil. It made a huge
difference my my hair. I use it for hot oil treatments and in my some
conditioners as a leave-in. I also use aura cacia sweet almond oil
everyday. This oil I use to nourish my hair. Now as for skin, I use
unrefine shea butter. If you whip the shea butter to a thinner
consistency you may fine that it may work for you. Don't totally give
up on oils. Not all oils are created equal in terms of what is best
for you. If you can purchase oil(s) as a sample to try do so. This
may be the best way to test out what actually works.
