Hello members! I just wanted to introduce myself to the group. I'm
Tansby and I have been locing and maintaining my locs for a little
over 5 months now and loving everyday of this journey. I currently
live in Alaska but orginally from New Orleans. I'm very happy with the
progress of my locs and always willing to learn more info from veteran
locers and archives.

Hi,

I am a new member (just joined today Oct 22, 05) and have experienced
been experiencing "thinning" amongst my once very healthy and shoulder
length beautiful locs.

When I (occasionally) wash my own hair (between once a
month "grooming" visits to a natural hair care stylist) I experience A
LOT of new growth. I also have noticed over the past 6 months, A LOT
of thinning (some of my locs now are connected to my scalp by only a
very thin strand of hair!!

I switched hair stylists about 4-5 months ago and it was fine for a
while, then BAM! the thinning and excessive new growth started again.

I have MANY natural hair care books, but none seem to address this
issue.

I DO NOT re-twist/groom on my own, between visits to the stylist, so I
am certain that my hair is NOT "over-twisted."

I am otherwise quite healthy, don't smoke or drink and I've always
taken decent care of my locs (oil them, don't wear them up or too
tight away form hairline.

Any ideas what I can/should do? Thanks!

When I do that my hair curls up. I need something more sturdy to hold the twist,
when I two strand twist it, it just becomes solidified curls or coils and comes
aloose because of the texture of my hair. I know I see caucasians with dreads so
I know there is a way for me to get my hair to hold, I just havent figured it
out yet.

ursula gray <urseg16@...> wrote:the only thing your hair needs to hold

I just started 2 weeks ago...hopefully my little ups and downs will
help others with thiers. My texture is wavy, so I've been warned by my
loctician and others that my hair will loc, but I'll need a lot of
patience. My coils keep coming out in the back and on the sides.
There are a few reasons for this:

1. I toss and turn at night, and although I tie my hair down, the sides
and back take a beating.
2. My hair is shorter on the sides and back.
3. I didn't think about this one...Night sweats. I'll be 45 next
month. Need I say more? :-) Some mornings I wake up and I (and my
coils) are drenched.

When my hair gets longer, the coils will stay better. The ones on the
top are doing great!

Does anyone else have challenges/advice?

For the past 2 years, I've been wearing my hair very short...we're
talking clippers on the back and sides. Now I have about 2.5 inches on
the top and about 1.5 inches on the back and sides.

I went back to the loctician yesterday and she retwisted it. Instead
of the short, fat coils, she made them long and thin. She also twisted
it dry instead of wet.

She didn't charge me anything for the retwist. She said she wants to
make sure her customers are happy.

Thank you! How long is your hair? I was thinking that because of the texture I
would have to wait for it to grow out a lil bit before going to get someone to
loc it.

Darra, my hair grows wavy and curly too. I'm working with a loctician.
My first visit was last Thursday. She coiled my hair with Jamaican
Lime and Mango Gel (smells great!), and said she would check back with
me to see how my coils were doing. She was afraid they may not last
because of my hair texture. If they didn't, she said we would try
something else.

I talked to her yesterday. The ones on the top are fine, but the back
and sides didn't last. I'm going back this afternoon, and I'll let you
know what happens.

I'll try to post a photo of my first session last week.

I know of someone that has loosely curled hair such as yours. I believe she
began her locs by having someone plait (instead of twisting which is less
secure) her hair into small (approx 1/4") squares and left them alone, allowing
her hair to loc .

I am also a new member, although I joined a few months back I haven't
participated in any of the ongoing discussions. I have been perm-free for a few
years now. I would like to loc my hair eventually but it grows wavy and curly,
and I'm not quite sure how I can "nap" it up... I would prefer if it was more
nappy but I can't get it that way. I have a close friend that I convinced to be
"natural" and her hair is more coarse than my hair is..I would trade with her
any day. The more coarse the hair, the better it will dred. Does anyone have
any ideas on what I can do, aside from gel and spritz, to get my hair to hold
twists or dreds?

see pics of your locs soon it's so wonderful to be in this group. You will

Do you have natural-textured hair extensions? I only see rather straight styles
on your web site.

I know this is a bit late but..

I stopped using the product as my hair had felt and performed better in the
past.

I am now sporting kinky twists with artificial hair.

The products works well on plastic hair, I must say!

Hello just checking out this group and I read your post.
I've tried the Frizz Ease and it didn't really work in my hair. It
starts out good but, then it ends up drying it out more than
anything. I also do two-strand twists in my hair. If you wash your
hair then apply a very light grease in your hair and on your
scalp, comb hair out and then twist while still damp...After that if
you sit under a dryer or just blow dry it and then once dry take the
twist apart. It's a really pretty style to either wear w/ a head band
or just twist back w/ bobby pins. Good Luck...you can reply back if
you think this is a good tip..UrseG

Peace All:

My name is Brandi Elitou and I have a Natural Hair Care Salon at my
home in Philly. I have been doing natural hair for 10 years and I
love it. I will be posting my website very soon and I hope that you
all can check it out as there will be pictures that are hot. In
addition, I hope that I can answer any questions that you may have
about natural hair and by the way, I will be putting out a hair
anthology very soon so I hope that you all will be willing to
contribute. This is a great opportunity to get other black women to
understand that it is important to take care of your hair in a
natural way as it is your health.

Thanks for letting me share and I hope to hear from you soon and
share some of my techniques. I also have a yahoo group for women
Philly called Phillynaturals.

To Your Health,
Brandi Elitou

P.S. Has anyone heard of Naturally You Magazine? I plan to advertise
with them via my sister but I want to know if nayone has experienced
reading or advertising with them.

Hi Kimberly,
The amount of time it takes for your hair to grow out depends on
what length you would be comfortable with. They say our hair grows
approximately 1/2" per month. I waited 12 months before wearing my
hair out because I was used to long (relaxed) hair and would have
felt a bit self conscious wearing a short style. But there are sooo
many options for shorter natural hair. I was fortunate to find a
salon that specializes in enhancing and highlighting your individual
texture but they ask for at least 6" of new growth. I tried kinky
twists and loved them, but I've heard that you shouldn't keep them
(or braids)in too long or your hair may loc.
Do you find that your hair is hard to handle with the mixed (relaxed
& natural)textures? Before I finished cutting off the relaxed ends
combing my wet hair was torture! I held on to the relaxed hair as a
sort of security blanket. But if I had to do it all over I would
have cut it sooner and saved myself some grief. Stay strong, it gets
easier!
